A graph for easier understanding drawn:

Note: Click on the Image for a larger view.

Some points of observation:
  • Chevrolet: Nothing now to help them with sales going in negative;

  • Ford: EcoSport is the only main respite to keep figures continuing. Figo, Fiesta Classic would be just helping.

  • Honda: New City and Amaze are keeping Honda and their staff busy!

  • Hyundai: Grand i10 and Xcent is doing them good with the rest as usual (Verna & i20).

  • Mahindra: XUV 5OO is dying slowly with same as Scorpio. M&M needs the Scorpio to keep things afloat.

  • Maruti Suzuki: Sales + by 12K cars. Alto 800 and Celerio could it be?

  • Tata: Zest and Bolt need to come ASAP and save them else a good-bye!

  • Toyota: Innova is helping but I guess the refreshed Liva & Etios have helped in giving numbers.

Anurag.

Thanks RSR!

Views expressed are purely personal :

Maruti : They've managed to regain momentum, its a tough road ahead, but they've had the cream of their market all this while. The sheer number of Maruti's on Indian roads will keep their service centers busy.

Now from 2014 to 2016, to remain unaffected, they've got to work on the next leg where they'll need to innovate excellent products and be able to deliver at extremely competitive prices. They've even got the brand following, and so IMO healthy sales are almost certain as long as the new products are put together exceedingly well!

Toyota : Its time they STOP short-changing Indian customers. A sedan like the new Altis deserved a better diesel engine. IMHO If they don't pull up their socks, they'll be reduced to a brand that makes old-school under-powered featureless inefficient cars.

If they could bring us the Avanza by this year end, then things could improve much more. IMO They could even possibly hit the 20k unit sales figure!

Tata Motors : Reading these sales figures since a while, as far as I can tell, Tata Motors may go on a Price War post Diwali. They tried it subtly by offering better warranty & low-cost maintenance plans, but it didn't work. So, they may choose to make a splash with outright low prices.

They seem to have improved on the A.S.S. front, apparently they're also 'perfecting' the product, and the next thing will be the branding & sales. Hope they dont make a silly pitch like the advt they did for Aria.

Afterall, they'd want to put to use that massive production capacity at their plants!

Chevy : These guys have a decent MPV in the Enjoy, a proportionate looking sedan with Sail & a reasonably good hatch too. To get out of this zone, maybe they too need to go on a Price War, if they're financially sound enough that is!

Honda : They're planning to get the Mobilio. Some say it'll be priced @par with the Ertiga, some say it'll be priced with 1L premium. Anyway.

I guess since they've retained the 1.5L Petrol from the City & the 1.5L iDtec Diesel mill, this may just be the First MPV whose Petrol & Diesel versions are priced around the same lines! I'm certain its coming with a 5-Speed gear-box, just hope they don't botch up the gear ratio's.

I'm abit disheartened to see auto-makers trying to pass off their lowest-segment cars modified as MPV's & still consider demanding a Premium! Even Datsun supposedly plans to launch a MPV based on its bare-bone hatchback Go! This IMO is sad & abit unfair. Why do they think people would choose the GO+ over, say a Maruti Eeco thats been here since years!?

Eagerly awaiting the detailed May 14 Analysis. These days a lot of snapshots of sales figures come out earlier in various other places and they only increase the appetite for the detailed Team-BHP analysis!

Re: April 2014 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

The official May 2014 sales and analysis thread seems to be delayed. Here is something that will whet the appetite further, as we wait for it. The May sales figures for the other mainstream car manufacturers are out now, in addition to the ones that were released earlier.

The total domestic sales numbers for the month of May 2014 (with May '13 nos. in parenthesis) are as follows:

1. Maruti Suzuki - 90,560 (77,821)

2. Hyundai - 36,205 (32,102)

3. Mahindra - 18,085 (22,244)

4. Honda - 13,362 (11,342)

5. Toyota - 11,833 (10,023)

6. Tata - 9,230 (11,134)

7. Ford - 6,053 (4,002)

8. Chevrolet - 4,865 (8,500)

9. Renault* - 3,627 (6,300)

10. Nissan - 3,029 (2,080)

11. Volkswagen - 2,654 (4,975)

12. Datsun - 1,992 (N/A)

13. Škoda - 1,046 (1,322)

14. Fiat - 800 (620)

Sources: Various press releases & news reports

* - approximate May '14 sales, as the official figure is not available

Re: April 2014 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Looking at the sales figures, my view -

Chevy : They are still selling few cars is plus point for them. Overall sad company now, hardly any new thing from them. Don't see anything good from them in next 1-2 years.

Datsun : Don't think this will sell in numbers. They got it wrong to start with i guess. Bad startegy overall, people don't like so called "Budget Car" to buy.

Fiat : Doing business as usual. They are maintaining their exclusivity in the market like Merc

Ford : Still delivery issues. Apart from Ecosport nothing is there. Figo is old now & struggling clearly now.

HM Mitsubishi : Finally they have closed. A golden era has ended in a sad way.

Honda : Amaze has lost it to Dzire & Xcent. With Zest launch, i think Honda will loose more. City still doing great numbers, interesting to see if they can sustain it, for how long. Brio - nothing much.

Hyundai : Grand i10 & Xcent doing great. Other cars clearly struggling in their respective segments, Verna too.

Mahindra : They are fighting with 3 cars only. They need more cars IMO. All 3 doing great though. Need small SUV ASAP.

Maruti : Great month for them. Swift & Dzire need to watch for Grand & Xcent duo. Need to scale up production for Celerio fast. Waiting for Ciaz & SX4 cross eagerly.

Nissan & Renault : Both struggling now. Need to open more show rooms & do better marketing i guess. Improve A.S.S. as well.

Skoda : All down thanks to their own A.S.S.

Tata : Tata also waiting for Zest & Bolt now i guess, nothing else to speak about.

Toyota : Slightly better this month. Etios & Liva are beaten by others.

VW : God knows when they will understand Indian market & people. Pathetic attitude towards Indian customers, just shows in their numbers.

Overall better month than April.

Re: April 2014 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Micra + Pulse + Go = 696 + 171 + 1992.

I find no reason why three different brands are trying to sell this one epic of a flop car. What a waste of resources.

Re: April 2014 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

I dont think the Datsun bashing is justified at this stage, its an infant brand therefore selling 2K per month is not a disaster by any means. Lets wait till Go+ & Redigo arrive in Indian market, theres a chance for Datsun to touch ~10K monthly sale nos.

Are You sure? Xuv 500 is the only model from Mahindra stable which gained in sales numbers in May Year over Year. that too from ~2100 to ~2900 (about 38%).
