Once the image damaged, it is damaged and takes A LOT effort to revive.

For GM, I have no hopes but waiting to see how Fiat responds.

Touching Ritz does not mean its going good. Ritz is a sales dud for Maruti as on date. IMO it is a shame for Toyota that it's product is below an underperformed car from Maruti. And it's Toyota to be blamed for it.

Don't quite agree. Maruti is the Don of sub 10-lakh cars, god of sub 5-lakh cars in India. Even a market dud in this segment from Maruti is a prince, if not a king. Toyota has always been zero in sub 10-lakh category and is not yet born in sub 5-lakh segment. For Toyota reaching even a market dud in this segment is a "princely" achievement.

Likewise, in the 10 lakh plus category, touching the sales of a Toyota dud would be a real achievement from Maruti. And I don't foresee that in the next 10 years.

Chevy Enjoy is not as good as Tavera. Aveo was better than Sail Sedan, I happily own an Aveo.

Sail U-VA is a poor mix of styling of the old Sail & U-VA hatchbacks. Spark is at end of its lifecycle.

Cruze & Captiva are very good but too high priced & not seen as VFM in their segments.

Chevy has a lovely brand image globally, but have undermined it by releasing bland & ordinary models here even though their after sales service is 2nd best only to Maruti.

Not for Toyota. All of us had huge expectations from the small car when it was announced by Toyota and the result is a equally huge disappointment. And saying that it closed in on the Ritz is making it even a bigger loser.

For Maruti, may be yes. But others are giving Toyota a tough fight in this category too. Moreover, I still believe their products are overpriced which will not help them with sale of products, other than Innova.

Re: May 2014 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Came across an article in today's Times of India regarding VW lowering it market share target.

http://epaperbeta.timesofindia.com/A...20062014019047

They plan to achieve close to 7-8% Market share by 2018 after the lowering down of the target.

At 1 to 1.5% market share in 4 years, its a steep mountain to climb, specially with the current image of VW cars as "High maintenance cost cars". It will be extremely difficult for VW to shed this image very soon.

I don't they want to shed that image. I get the feeling Skoda and VW enjoy similar brand value/perception in India. At least upto the D segment vehicles.

They haven't been able /don't want to push Skoda into the "value segment" like it is in Europe. I doubt they want to be "value oriented" although Fiat has done this well recently with lower spare costs and cheaper service

Yes, you are right about FIAT. However, with the kind of numbers they are doing, I have my serious doubts on how long will they be able to sustain this proposition of "lower costs and service"

Re: May 2014 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

^^^ Maruti back in business with good numbers again when market is struggling. Interested to see numbers from others. Not much expected apart from H & H. Mini cars segment with 48 K units is just great. I guess Alto back in business with a bang. Celerio also must be contributing there with ever green Wagon R.

Re: May 2014 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

As per IAB, Toyota has got 5400 bookings of Etios Cross & 3000 of New Corolla

If this is true, Toyota has managed to turn around the fortune just by wrapping a plastic cladding around the struggling car.

Also 3000 nos for new Corolla is a huge success.

Edit: Looking at craze for SUVs/Cross Overs, Fiat should be already smelling success for its upcoming Avventura
