Car makers collaborate to investigate the Takata airbag issue

Toyota called for an industry-wide joint initiative to hire an independent engineering company to investigate and address the Takata airbag inflator issues. Affected automakers will be able to share test results and analysis. This collaborative effort will benefit all car makers fitted with Takata airbags globally. Honda and Ford have already agreed to cooperate.

According to the testing data provided by Takata to Toyota and National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA), the risk was maximum in areas of consistently high absolute humidity. Independent testing by the car makers will only add to Takata's research and investigation.

In another thread there is long discussion going on safety and inclusion of ABS/Airbags etc. as standard equipment in India. These news dent the argument for such requirements and also confidence of people generally on automobile manufacturers
Maruti already said they don't want to build safe cars anyway since the MD's driver's neighbour's relative or so cannot afford a car if airbags and ABS were made mandatory. So they have nothing to bury down I guess

Good to note that these manufacturers are considering joint initiative. It seems like reactive action to the mounting crisis. In a similar vein, if only Indian auto manufacturers proactively agree on minimum safety standards and implement in all vehicles. I know I am dreaming.

It seems all the Japanese manufacturers are effected for sure and GM . Wondering where does the German car makers source their Airbags. Are they immune to this?

Re: Quality issue with Takata airbags. Honda, Toyota, Nissan, GM, BMW, Subaru impacte

There is a Reuters / Business Standard report that "Takata has yet to find root cause of airbag ruptures - exec" (Link). Let see how much water this claim by a Takata safety executive holds. Time will tell, hopefully.

The Japanese Industries ministry does not want the "Manufactured in Japan" brand to get hit by this and have called Takata Chairman and CEO Shigehisa Takada to explain the crises. (Takata CEO called to explain air bag crisis to Japan's industry ministry).

Everyone wants this to be a manufacturing fault rather than the dreaded design fault, in which case the damages would be huge.

The Japanese have the US-Japan relationship in mind when the call the Takata CEO.

Does India have the will to do anything about it on the Diplomatic level, since the same airbags have been sold here as well?

In any case, hope all the Indian recalls happen without a single miss.

Most of the premium segment players buy from TRW. Barring Takata, other companies are Autoliv, Daicel and TRW which manufacture SRS Airbags. Diacel and TRW also work for the Aviation sector.

ZF Friedrichshafen (It's a German gear manufacturing company) is buying TRW.

Renault India has issued a recall for 26 units of it's Scala sedan and 620 units of it's Pulse hatchback, manufactured between September 2011 and July 2012, due to a possible faulty driver airbag supplied by Takata.

Quote:
Renault plans to recall 646 cars in India to fix faulty airbags that the French carmaker said could potentially affect passengers' safety.

The recall will cover Pulse hatchback and the diesel Scala sedan manufactured between September 2011 and July 2012, the Indian unit of the carmaker said in a notice to the government.

Renault India said it has initiated the recall step voluntarily. "Renault is conducting a voluntary check on certain potentially affected Renault vehicles (620 Pulse and 26 Scala — produced between September 2011 and July 2012) which may have a possibility of driver airbag problem," a company spokesman said in an emailed statement to ET.

Honda said CEO Takanobu Ito will leave his post. Takahiro Hachigo, 55, currently a managing officer in charge of the company's r&d operations in China, succeeds Ito as president and CEO in late June.

U.S. fines Takata for not cooperating on defective air bag probe

Quote:
The United States is fining air bag maker Takata Corp $14,000 per day for failing to cooperate fully with the government investigation into the company's defective airbags, the U.S. transportation secretary said on Friday.
Meanwhile in India, even after a minister's death, the MD of the leading car manufacturer can blabber that security is not something all car buyers can aspire to get by default.

Unfortunately, the air is still unclear on this issue.
Toyota, Honda and Nissan are making yet another recall over this.

Though finer details are still unclear, the affected vehicles are like in the 2003 - 2007 time period.

You can see the detailed press release in the Reuters report: http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/...0NY0CX20150513

Looks like the Takata airbag recall just went WAY bigger:

http://money.cnn.com/2015/05/19/news...all/index.html

A massive 34 million vehicles in total have been impacted by this.

Ford stops using Takata air bag inflators in future vehicles

Quote:
TOKYO: Ford has decided to stop using air bag inflators made by Takata Corp in future vehicles as the auto industry continues to move away from the potentially dangerous products.

Takata inflators can explode with too much force, sending shrapnel into drivers and passengers. At least eight people have been killed worldwide and hundreds injured.

Company spokeswoman Kelli Felker says Ford will stop using Takata inflators in any car, truck or SUV now under development.

Ford is the fourth automaker to make the move. The company will continue to buy other products from the Japanese maker of auto safety equipment.

Honda, Toyota and Nissan already have announced plans to stop using Takata inflators in future vehicles.

Twelve automakers have recalled 19.2 million vehicles in the US to replace defective inflators.

True Anurag. The episode has inflicted an irreversible damage to Takata's reputation. According to some reports on our forum, Honda has sourced the replacements from Autoliv & Daicel for the massive inflator recall in India.
