The electronic meters of some of the latest computer-chip-controlled fuel dispensers installed at petroleum outlets in the State could be “wirelessly re-programmed at will” to show an incorrect reading and thus deny consumers their money’s worth, according to Legal Metrology Department enforcers here.

The deceitful practice was first reported from Punjab recently. The technology allowed fuel outlet managers there to remotely control the meter reading of fuel dispensers by regulating the electric pulses generated by the machine’s revolutions.

The knowhow, which is gaining ground in south India, and possibly Kerala, rendered tampering with fuel dispensers “virtually undetectable” as it did not require any alteration to the machine’s calibration unit.

If true, this is the newest trick in the house :Frustrati

@mods: Feel free to move as necessary

I remember the fuel dispensing stations in AP went on strike against the supposed harassment of legal metrology officials during or about the general elections. Their demand, among others, is they should be notified well in advance of impending check by the officials.

So that they could "prepare" the fuel pumps for the check, and then go back to their ways of duping customers after the legal metrology guys have left? The rogues!

It's getting difficult to find a truly honest PSU pump these days. If it's not adulteration, then it's got to be meter tampering. Even when it's not these two, it's likely the pump attendants will do their best to divert attention and trick customers.

BPCL fuel station near my house has been seized and closed last Friday by Telangana legal metrology officials for tampering with the fuel meters. This fuel station was twice warned before the officials took action.

No exact information as to how the management was controlling the fuel meters.:Frustrati

Unless we check the quantity using a measuring can each time we refuel, there is always the chance of getting cheated at an unverified bunk. I feel this is the reason some bunks refuse to fill fuel in a bottle (Shell excepted); you can easily realize you are getting cheated.

Somehow, I'd prefer getting cheated in quantity to getting cheated by quality (adulteration).

When will the legal metrology folks get on with a similar programme to check bangalore pumps? I haven't heard of any bangalore pumps ever being closed after checks.
