Manufacturers to upload car specifications to Govt website

The government has asked automobile manufacturers to upload the specification of vehicles they sell to customers on a government web portal starting this October.

Quote:
...
While manufactures will be allowed to do this voluntarily in the first year, from October next year, no vehicle will be registered anywhere in India if the data — specifications like engine and chassis numbers, engine capacity, colour and fuel used — aren't made available to the government.
....
Automotive manufacturers welcomed the move, saying that they already have the information ready and transferring that to the government would help in faster and hasslefree ownership of vehicles for customers.

A welcome move. This will reduce the incidents of dealers selling old vehicles as new (like the one below).

But Govt. already has data of every vehicle sold, courtesy RTOs. Why another data-bank again? All Central Govt. needs to do is tap into that information bank.

That data is available at individual RTOs in respective states, collecting it and managing it 'centrally' could be tedious task.

Rather seeking this information from manufacturers (considering they also have it ready in the hand) and maintaining it independently is an easier option.

Also, this gives a second level of verification for investigating agencies since state RTOs are known to be under influence of 'agents' and cases of data manipulation have been found in the past.

From the news article what I could make out is that this is for the vehicles to be sold. The vehicles already registered are already taken care of. The database is already in place for the vehicles already registered.

Aren't they talking about makers submitting the database to the govt. prior the registration? That makes sense.

This would probably help RTOs in cross-verifying the info provided by the dealers while registering. RTOs currently have to go with the date of manufacture based on the details furnished by the dealer, which leads to older vehicles (lying in dealer yard) registered as newer ones after being sold to unsuspecting sellers.

With the proposed model, details are entered into the government system as part of the dealer shipments (which is when the sale from the factory happens) which can be cross-verified to ensure that the information provided by the dealers are correct. Probably, the registration process at the RTO would involve linking these vehicles in the site as registered with them.

Another advantage with this system is to track the vehicles that might be plying without registering themselves with the RTOs.

And while they are at it, they might as well consider doing away with this inter-state life-tax issue which is every motorist's nightmare when he crosses into another state. I know revenue is a diferent subject altogether but , if implemented, it will provide much needed relief to vehicle owners. But, I know if wishes were horses....

Fully agree on the inter-state life tax part. I have a Swift diesel in Kerala that is averaging less than 500km per month currently and a Swift petrol in Hyderabad that is covering 1000+km. How I wish I could swap the two cars!
