Maruti Suzuki K-series engine crossed 25 lakh production mark

Maruti Suzuki, India's largest carmaker in terms of sales, has announced that it has produced more than 25 lakh units of the K-series petrol engine.

The K-series engine made its debut in 2008 in the A-Star hatchback and soon made its way to other products from Maruti Suzuki. The K-series range is also used in cars run on alternate fuel such as LPG and CNG.

The K-series range is built at a plant, which deploys over 500 foolproofing stations. Maruti Suzuki claims that with each model refreshment or product launch, the engines have been refined to offer enhanced driveability and higher fuel efficiency.

At present, the K-series engine is available in three variants:
  • K10 - Alto K10, Wagon R, Celerio
  • K12 - Ritz, Swift, Dzire
  • K14 - Ertiga

The K14 unit is likely to be used in the upcoming Ciaz sedan as well.

I think it's a well deserved success. Pretty nice engine. bench marked among the best in India and from my friends, returns great FE too. But the bad news for Indian subsidiary is that they pay quite some royalty (read somewhere) to the Japanese counterpart for this. Nevertheless, a great feat.

Now, I hope they get into the turbo-charging zone and give us some impeccable engines there as well.

It's high time we got a 'real' Swift RS with the K14 engine and beefed up mechanicals to handle the extra go!

MS has all the necessary ingredients at their disposal, and are in no danger of having their best brand misconstrued as 'pricey and expensive to run'.

Can MS do something for the everyday enthusiast, for once?
