Official Press Release:

HYUNDAI REVEALS NAME OF NEW GLOBAL SUV: ‘CRETA’

- Global debut in India in second half of 2015-
- Name will be used in world-over markets-

New Delhi, June 02, 2015 - Hyundai Motor India Ltd, the country’s leading premium car manufacturer and the largest passenger car exporter, today announced the name of its new SUV: ‘CRETA’. The global roll-out of this new model will start in the second half of 2015 in India, followed soon after with sales in world markets.

Hyundai Creta” will be an influential global model for the Hyundai Motor brand in one of the fastest-growing vehicle segments, helping the company to reach out to many more consumers in new and established international markets.

Consistent with the core concepts underpinning Hyundai Motor’s Modern Premium brand direction – SIMPLE, CREATIVE, CARING – the ‘Creta’ name is simple and easy to remember. Pronunciation of Creta evokes welcome similarities with the term ‘creative’. The Creta name will be used for all the global markets.

Are just marketing gimmicks or should we read more into the comment on New Global SUV etc ? Does it mean the ix 25 could be further modified to suit India?

They might have as well persisted with Hyundai IX25. That sounds a lot better than Creta

They had to somehow kill the spirits of folks eagerly waiting for this car to be launched. Hence the name .

re: Hyundai ix25 Compact SUV caught testing in India. EDIT: Named the Creta

Good car (prima facie) with a horrible name. Hyundai may think that the name would remind people of creativity, and possibly, Crete (in Greece). All that it reminds me of is:

1) Critter
2) Keeda (again, meaning insect in Hindi)

This is worse than 'Laura', which is at least an established female name, regardless of the juvenile sniggering it may have caused amongst Hindi speakers. I guess some users may be tempted to order ix25 badges from China.

What I am also not able to understand is: since Hyundai has an established practice of naming vehicles after places (Santa Fe, Tuscon, SanTro(pez)), why not just admit that it is named after Crete? Why put a useless marketing spin on the name?

I just hope that this 'Globally new' model does not have its length chopped off to meet the 4000mm mark

re: Hyundai ix25 Compact SUV caught testing in India. EDIT: Named the Creta

Upon some googling, I found "Creta" in Italian/Latin means "Chalk". A worthy competitor to the "Duster", I guess .

re: Hyundai ix25 Compact SUV caught testing in India. EDIT: Named the Creta

I am going all 'cross eyed' with this, but Creta in Italian and Spanish translates to 'Chalk' (as per Google translate) which reminds one of the Dacia Duster, but amazingly in Romanian (where the Dacia Duster originates from) it means 'Crete', the Greek island.

Is there a well thought out 'in-joke' here somewhere?

Disclaimer: the above translations have been taken from Google translate, and may have absolutely no linkage with the actual usage of the words in their respective languages(!)

You stole the words from my mouth. Ix25 is rather upmarket n stylish. Having said that Logan and Laura are worser.

But whatever they name it, it is going to sell as now is the ripe time for mini suvs. And their launch is on dot.

Ex-Creta will be wiped clean by Baby Duster.

re: Hyundai ix25 Compact SUV caught testing in India. EDIT: Named the Creta

Horrible name. Sounds like the word it is being joked about. Couldn't they think of a better name? Chalk in Latin? Well, do they want Duster to wipe it clean? They must have meant the other way around. But, seriously, what is with these names? Liva? Like an Englishman trying to say Lever. Brio? Like someone burped. And now Creta? Why can't they use simple English words? Or, if they are down on words, why not alphanumeric like Germans?

Have to say Hyundai is setting a new benchmark for interiors and features (and even exteriors for the newer cars) Will be tough for others to follow and hopefully they will be forced to.
