Pareek has been with Maruti for 2 decades and a huge contributor to its success. I doubt he wants to start from scratch. Tata Motors is in need of a full & complete overhaul; branding, marketing, product design, reliability & quality, after-sales etc. Pareek is in his mid-fifties now. Does he have the energy & fire in his belly as he did 10 - 15 years back? I think he's at that stage of his career where he'd rather work on making a good company great, rather than making a poor performer good. To turnaround Tata Motors, you need a 10 (minimum) - 15 year timeline. Does Pareek have it in him for that? More importantly, would he want to?

The work culture at Maruti & Tata is also poles apart. Maruti is tight, professional and fast. There are politics, but not to the level in Tata.

Then, it's a question of how important the company is to its parent. Maruti is Suzuki's crown jewel & India the only country where Suzuki dominates in this manner. For Tata Motors, the Indian passenger car division is the smallest (after commercial vehicles & JLR).

Lastly, Pareek might be a sales & marketing genius. An effective CEO needs to be more than that. Pareek hasn't proven himself in areas outside of sales.

Two CEOs who have successfully turned around troubled car companies are Alan Mulally & Carlos Ghosn. That's the kind of approach that Tata Motors needs if it is to carry on with its passenger car business.

Tata Motors currently has the late Karl Slym's vacancy unfulfilled right ? Could Mr. Pareek be the next Tata Motors Managing Director ?

After personally seeing the level of customer commitment from top Tata motors customer connect team, they surely need someone with proven records and deliver the kind of customer satisfaction achieved by Maruti in non-premium car segment.

If he goes he'll need at least 6-7 years to have something good happening to Tata Motors the way he did at Maruti. There's hell a lot of work to do there!

Wish we had another copy of Mayank Pareek, we could have sent him to VW or Skoda!

IMHO, for any corporate entity, it all boils down to the value system that is ingrained. Mayank Pareek is possibly very hard to replace, but nobody is indispensable - the show goes on.

Maruti's value system has probably matched very well with the Indian car owner's psyche as a result of which they enjoy the market leading position.

Tata and other car companies need to learn from this and take the positives. If indeed Mayank Pareek is headed to Tata Motors, hope that he can make a difference.

Would be a slightly different case here, if he indeed moves to Tata Motors.

In the recent past Tata Motors has shown intent to change things. They have shown the intent to be more competitive and have been visibly working towards improving their brand image (revaming dealerships, trying to promote the youthful character of the zest, the media drives, the factory visits etc). If you look at the Team-BHP review of the ZEST v/s any of the other recent reviews, you would see that Tata Motors is NOT trying to cut costs, but to improve their quality, image, brand perception.

As an experienced stalwart in the industry, nothing would perhaps give you a bigger kick than turning things around for someone who is not doing so well, but at the same time has the scale, intent and most importantly the willingness to invest money and effort towards turning things around.

I think Tata Motors definitely ticks all the above boxes.

R S Kalsi has been named as replacement of Mayank Pareek. At present, Kalsi is designated as Executive Director, heading the Parts, Accessories and Outbound Logistics divisions of MSIL.

He is expected to assume new responsibilities from today itself.

Its a bad news for Maruti, may be and great news for Tata for sure.

I disagree with the views posted here, saying that it will be a bad decision moving to Tata. What is the use of his greatness and skill, if he cannot resurrect a company? Infact, it will be a waste of his skills to go to a company which is already established and does not need his level of greatness.

I also dont understand why people talk about Tata as if it was some vada-paav /chaat seller and now they sell cars. Looking at the Zest and the future line-up things are only going to go north for Tata IMO. With Mr. Pareek joining them, it would be even better.

With the Zest, Tata has proven that their product is not only at par, it is even better on multiple factors compared to the perceived giants. The recent Honda offerings are so poor in terms of quality, I would say, Mr Pareek should join Honda rather than Tata. Honda is losing its game in terms of quality and fit and finish.

It appears to be an unceremonious exit, ill timed from MS's perspective with the launch of Ciaz around the corner. They have wasted precious little time in announcing his replacement which further fuels the speculation that not everything is fine.

The big picture here is of parent Suzuki's increasing influence over corporate governance and reporting structures where Japanese expats now wield more power.

Interesting move by Mr M Pareekh, if what the media reports say are true, that he is moving to Tata Motors.

For an industry veteran like Mr. Pareekh, Tata Motors may actually give him the opportunity where he will be allowed to flex his intellectual and corporate strategy muscles to take India's homegrown automaker to the next level of operational excellence.

The problem with working with global OEM's is that at many points of time, you will have some appointees from the foreign OEM breathing down your neck, questioning each and every of your move, strategies and your opinions They simply will not accept the "Indian" view-point in the first instance - no matter how experienced you are in the market or how logically you have tried to "justify" your statements to the global OEMs' residential representative.

And this behaviour, for people as erudite and experienced as Mr Pareekh and peers of his ilk, becomes uncomfortable and frustrating after a certain length of time. Most of the global OEM's operating in India seems to be suffering from this "complex". Suzuki, Honda, Nissan, VW, Daimler Trucks, Hyundai - just ask some of the senior-most executives who have left these companies over the years and they will tell you stories along the same lines.

For Mr. Pareekh, TML will throw in a set of challenges which at his level of seniority and experience, hopefully he will relish. TML stands to benefit immensely from his Maruti experience in setting right dealership sales process norms and his ability to implement stringent quality targets for dealership sales and service. In fact even now some of the senior Level - 2 managers at TML are from Maruti, notable being the present national dealer development head, who has been poached from Maruti.

In the next 5 years, TML will offer to him a bouquet of products; which has already started with the ZEST, and which will cover almost all the market segments Maruti currently operates in, if not a couple of more, with products which possibly will compete very, very competitively with Suzuki's, Toyota's, Hyundai's and Honda's, in terms of product quality and performance.

What remains is to connect the dots in the retail and after sales experience which these gents should be able to do.

It will be a tall task, but definitely would be interesting to watch how changes unfold w.r.t. India's largest automaker!

Is Suzuki trying to do a Hyundai here? We did see reports in the last year as to how the Korean expats were wielding power at Hyundai rendering Indian executives toothless!

I think the challenges Mayank would face would be manageable (especially for the experience he has). He'd prolly continue to take ahead the blueprint that Late Mr.Karl Slym would've laid out for PVBU segment.

Where Tata Motors will need to be very careful is in filling in the MD position. It's a tricky & complex situation there. The person not only needs to be an expert in understanding the market, but also to deal with & manage the internal affairs (company politics), all staying within the ethical framework of how a Tata company must work. AFAIK Karl Slym was genius when it came to dealing with people, that's also why he was so open minded especially in looking to bring changes & improvements in products as well as ownership experience.

Anyway, interesting development. All the best to Tata Motors!

Looks like he wants to and he'd rather try, than think he cannot do anything. Mr. Pareek has officially joined Tata Motors as its President of the PV business.
