re: Maruti WagonR sales. EDIT: Crosses the 30 lakh milestone!

Perhaps the best car MSIL made (ofcourse after the M800)... We have been carpooling in my friend's WagonR for the last 2 years and we just love it. Infact, my wife who is now learning to drive is keen to pick one up shortly (perhaps a pre-owned one or wait till Stingray AMT gets launched). Very practical, no-nonsense car... !!

I wouldn't believe that news item.

(1) The WagonR in the picture is the previous generation JDM WagonR which was sold from 2008 - 2012. The current generation WagonR looks different as in the pic I have attached.

(2) If MSIL was going to launch this version in India, they wouldn't be driving it around with zero camouflage on permanent registration plates (they are not even test vehicle plates).

(3) The bonnet / front over-hang looks to be the same as the JDM WagonR, which indicates that it has the same 660cc engine as the JDM Kei car. Whenever a new WagonR is launched in India, MSIL redesigns the entire front-end to fit the K10 engine and in turn makes the overhang disproportionate and a bit well, ungainly.

(4) The probable reason why MSIL imported this vehicle was to study / benchmark the idle stop system for the next generation / face-lifted WagonR.

Oh, and lastly,

(5) YR9 is the model code of the current India spec WagonR which was launched in 2010.

But for all you know, I may be completely wrong.

Cheers

re: Maruti WagonR sales. EDIT: Crosses the 30 lakh milestone!

Maruti Suzuki WagonR has recently become the third vehicle from the company’s stable to reach the 2-million unit sales mark after the Alto and becomes automaker’s third vehicle to ink this big record.

Quote:
As the number of launches in the mini segment is drying up owing to a shift in customer demand and the company’s focus towards premium products, it is quite an achievement to reach the 2 million sales mark. In fact, after staying subdued for a couple of years due to poor demand in the rural and semi-urban markets, combined volumes of Alto and WagonR have recovered and increased 28.6% y-o-y to 2,92,442 units in the first five months (April to August) of the current financial year. During the same period, volumes of WagonR grew 3.4% y-o-y, while for Alto, it increased 16.7%. In FY17, the volumes of WagonR increased just 1.6% to 1.72 lakh units, while in FY16, the volumes spiked by just 0.43% to 1,61,250 units.

re: Maruti WagonR sales. EDIT: Crosses the 30 lakh milestone!

I own one since the past 3-4 months and it is my daily drive, but I somehow find the Waggie a bit characterless to drive. It is better suited to those who don't want driving to be a burden in addition to the other daily routines. Certainly not for those who want a boost of adrenaline in the mundane daily commutes.

Rants apart, it has been quite Fuel efficient and can sit 4 well built adults comfortably, which is why I believe it is selling like hot cakes.

Maruti WagonR crosses the 20-lakh sales milestone

The cumulative sales of the Maruti Suzuki WagonR hatchback have crossed the 20 lakh mark. It is the company's third model to achieve this feat after the Maruti 800 and Alto.

Maruti WagonR sales. EDIT: Crosses the 30 lakh milestone!-wagonr.jpg

The WagonR was introduced in the Indian market back in 1999 (18 years ago). The model received a first facelift in 2003, followed by the introduction of the WagonR Duo LPG in 2004. A revised version of the car was launched in 2010 along with a CNG variant. Sales of the WagonR crossed the 10 lakh unit mark in 2011. In 2015, Maruti introduced an AMT version (AGS) of the car and also equipped the vehicle with dual airbags and ABS. In 2017, a new top-end VX+ variant was added.

The WagonR is powered by a 998cc, 3-cylinder petrol engine that produces 67 BHP @ 6,200 rpm and 90 Nm of torque @ 3,500 rpm. The CNG-powered engine churns out 58 BHP and 77 Nm of torque. A 5-speed manual transmission is offered as standard, while a 5-speed automated manual transmission is available as an option on select variants.

According to Maruti, 45% of WagonR customers bought it as their first car, while 20% purchased it multiple times. Since the introduction of the automated manual transmission, the AGS variant accounts for 16% of the total WagonR sales, while CNG accounts for 20%.

Cumulative sales milestones since launch (1999):
  • 2004: 1,00,000 units
  • 2008: 5,00,000 units
  • 2011: 10,00,000 units
  • 2014: 15,00,000 units
  • 2017: 20,00,000 units

Re: Maruti WagonR crosses the 20-lakh sales milestone

This is another Omni for Maruti where they have carried out minimal changes in every face lift yet the love of buyers for this machine was consistent even when there were multiple choices within 10 - 15% price difference.

The tall boy design with acres of headroom, simple mechanical and an all rounder nature for city runabouts is the USP of this car. Availability of parts is very similar to erstwhile 800 and people say that not even once they have to wait for any part to arrive at the ASS, typically all parts are available every time without fail !

What else is called at "complete peace of mind" !

It will do 3 million mark unless the revised safety norms going to be introduced shortly in the country make it redundant !

Leave aside 4 speed, a friend is happy with the 3 speed TC offered in WagonR as it is absolutely trouble free for countless number of years !

18 Till I Die! Wagon R deserves this amazing feat, as it is the de-facto 1st time buyer's car who wants ease-of-use, low running costs, sense of space and long-term reliability.

We had bought one for my grand-dad in 2003 who found the WagonR to be best in terms of ingress and egress comfort for his knees. Good visibility and not that rev-happy engine aids in safe and stable progress.

CNG fitted one is lapped up readily by the fleet market and frankly has no competition.

Wishing more milestones to the trusty work-horse. An electric future maybe?

Maruti WagonR sales cross the 30 lakh unit milestone

Maruti Suzuki has achieved a new sales milestone as WagonR sales crossed the 30 lakh unit mark.

Maruti WagonR sales. EDIT: Crosses the 30 lakh milestone!-wagonr.jpg

The Maruti Suzuki WagonR was introduced in 1999. The carmaker sold the first 5 lakh units in 2008 and by 2010, sales doubled to 10 lakh units. In 2015, Maruti celebrated the 15 lakh sales milestone.

In the next 2 years, Maruti sold 5 lakh WagonRs taking the sales tally to 20 lakh units. 25 lakh sales were up in 2021 and within the next 2 years, the carmaker sold another 5 lakh units of the hatchback.

According to the company, the WagonR has been the best-selling model for the last 2 consecutive years. Currently, in its third generation, the WagonR is available with 1.0-litre and 1.2-litre K-Series engines, which now come with an Idle Start-Stop system. It also comes with a factory-fitted CNG kit.

The WagonR is based on the fifth-generation Heartect platform. The car is equipped with a host of safety features, including ABS with EBD, ESC and Hill-Hold (AMT).

Re: Maruti WagonR sales cross the 30 lakh unit milestone

A fitting milestone for a true legend. This vehicle democratized space - analogous to 800's revolution of ease of use, maintenance and mileage.

Re: Maruti WagonR sales cross the 30 lakh unit milestone

There was a time, I looked upto a Wagon R in my garage. Will I buy it today? perhaps no! It is mostly to do with the "Uber/Ola" image that WagonR is now associated with. It would be interesting to know the statistics of how many "T" plate WagonR's were sold between 2015 to 2021 as thats when the "app aggregator" boom was on.

Re: Maruti WagonR sales cross the 30 lakh unit milestone

Not something one should celebrate about; they should have sunset WagonR at least a decade back considering its safety rating, we should educate as many as possible to avoid buying WagonR or others cars which are dumped in India and not sold elsewhere.

Re: Maruti WagonR sales. EDIT: Crosses the 30 lakh milestone!

Three adjustable head restraints with three point seatbelts for for the rear occupants would make the package perfect. Hope MSIL updates it soon as they did with the Baleno recently. The older Wagon R's had head restraints even in the base trims.

Re: Maruti WagonR sales. EDIT: Crosses the 30 lakh milestone!

Amazing performance! The last 5L took just 2 years just like the 15-20L duration in 2015.

The FIL is going to pay tax for his 15-year-old Wagon R for another 5 years as he does not feel there is any other car he will buy. The only option he sees is to buy it again and he will think about it when MSIL comes up with an electric version of the tall boy!

PS: Can we please spare such threads where people preach about safety ratings? We have enough threads for the same. why take this thread off-topic!
