Hindustan Motors to launch `Mitsubishi Icar` in India by 2007

Tuesday, August 01, 2006

Hindustan Motors has plans to launch the `Mitsubishi Icar` in India by end of 2007.

As per the plan, the company will introduce the new model through the SKD (semi-knocked down) route whereby the new vehicle will be assembled at the company`s plant at Tiruvallur, in Tamil Nadu.

HM has been making Mitsubishi brand of cars (Lancer) since 1998 under a tie-up with Mitsubishi Motor Corporation, Japan.

Currently, the facility has an annual production capacity of 25,000 units.

The Icar is a 600cc, 12-valve, 3-cylinder car with a 4-speed auto gearbox. The Icar is currently available only in Japan.

The car is a four seater with enough equipment to put our premier hatchbacks to shame. It has a rear mounted engine...offcourse HM will have to plonk in a bigger engine...else it is a flop show on the first day. looks are subjective..but i think its cute enough for an urban girl to consider buying it.
I will definitely think of buying it for my wife. its small..ample space for wife and kids..with some toned down design for the indian shores..and if HM can bring down the price level to alto/santro range..it can be a perfect second car. What say guys??
