Hi all,

I'm new to this forum and this is my first post. Hope you all will appreciate my enthusiasm. Regarding technical knowledge of cars I'm a layman but I'm very much instresed in Indian Automotive scene. Of all cars available here The Safari appeals to me most and Suzuki Swift the least.

Well friends I have a friend. He was my Schoolmate and from his early days he was always into the cars and a big TELCO fan. In june this year Tata Motors invited him to their Pune Headquartes to examine his idea of Dimple Flap Safety Design (Now does anybody here actually knows what the hell it is because he never tells me, he has even filed a patent for it in US and India).

Since he was coming from Tata's headquarters the first thing i asked him was about new Tata Safari Dicor 2.2 (the first time I read about it was right here at Team-Bhp) through an email. He replied after three days. Below is the piece of mail he wrote me back (I'm copying and pasting it).

Hmmm well im answering ur query...Tata Motors AGM is already over. New Dicor 2.2 may be slated for launch in this festive seasons otherwise in Jan-07, the development is already over & currently itz on validation. i've also driven both DICORS ( 2.2 for Safari & 1.4 (90 bhp) for Indica/Indigo during my summer interns at Engineering Reserch Centre (ERC), Tata Motors R&D Headquaters, Pune.

Both engines are OSSUM & chef-d'oeuvre, they can dupe anyone as petrol but bigger surprise is that new 3.0 V6 200+bhp is under development...well specificly development over just validation & testing is to be done. This engine 'll be used in next gen Safari Platform (X2) fron 2008 onwards...again remind you that this engine is inhouse one, not with AVL. So hats off to Tata guys.

The thing that got me excited was what i have marked in bold. A Safari with 200+ BHP is enough good news for any civilised beast to cheer up. So guys is this news true??? Do we really get to see a 200+ Bhp wholly indigenous car in India.

Did not mention if it is a petrol or Diesel version - for the V6?

Please remember to take everything TATA says with a healthy dose of bull****.

I myself don't know about the fuel, will ask him again. But I think that has to be Diesal.

Doesn't this sound similar to the engine of the Accord?

I have no doubt of Tata being able to match that output from a 3.0 liter. And if they can extract 90bhp from a 1.4 diesel, they very well can match 200bhp from a 3.0 diesel.

Kudos to Tata for trying...even if it eventually does not see the light of day.

Fiat 1.3 Multijet JTD has 90 bhp in one of its states of tune. So even if Tata gets 90 bhp from a 1.4 they are still behind, but may be even that 90 bhp is with Fiats Knowhow.

Lets hope we soon have a 500+ bhp unblown 6.3 litre V8 from Tata.

Woow that really is good news and with the X2 platform the Safari will shed some weight and soon it will be fast as well. I am waiting for this one.

So what exactly is your point?

That the figures are not surprising or ground-breaking. There's room for getting more out of a 1.4.

Its good that Tata is doing it.

And that is all that matters.

There's one more hunch that I have, which I will share, even if it might sound silly to most. That the Indica Petrol and the Diesel have the same block. Read this as, has the ability to withstand high compression pressures, with the Block being Turbo in Diesel format.

So couldn't "technically" a Turbo-charged Petrol be a distant possibility, agreed they need to do a lot of Plumbing and stuff.

What will be ground-breaking is the price that Tata offers is at. Most technologies have no mass appeal unless the price is brought down to realistic levels. Thats precisely the reason why cell phones have only become popular in the last decade. They existed for much longer than that.

I'm not worried about the power. But how much of that power will be useable? And what about stability?

A 200+bhp Safari will be capable of serious speeds (if it ever happens).

I hope Tata is looking at the bigger picture here and not concentrating only on power.

Anyway, i'm gonna wait and see what really happens.

I am also excited at this great news, but I agree with shan about the issue to the chassis' ability to handle that power.

I do hope they work on the suspension and strenghten the chassis to cope with the power, because otherwise it may be pretty useless.
