re: Mercedes & Audi sell more than 10,000 cars in 2014

The way Mercedes has polished its product lineup is commendable. This has directly translated to the sales boost.

Earlier Merc was notorious for not bringing their latest products which led BMW and Audi to garner advantage and thus lose almost a 10 year lead. Hats off to Merc for salvaging the situation with aplomb!

Since we're discussing luxury cars here, thought this'll be interesting to share. I've always been curious about the Mini's sales:

Quote:
Mini has led BMW to clock a growth of 38 per cent in sales of the brand in 2013, selling 418 units as against 302 units in 2012. The Mini accounted for more than 5 per cent of BMW's total sales in India in 2013.

Would love to know this, have seen few V40s lately, Volvo is slowly establishing itself as a brand(most people I meet seems to know its value now a days), but the same is not reflected in sales I guess.

I guess that is some good news for them. The % growth is quite significant. With the launch of the V40 hatch, I hope to see them garner some more numbers.

re: Mercedes & Audi sell over 10,000 cars in 2014. BMW is far behind at 6,800 sales

These numbers illustrate the sheer size of our neighbour's market. Audi sells 50 times more cars in China!

Quote:
In 2013, the Chinese bought 492,000 Audis, 362,000 BMWs and 228,000 Mercedes, making the country an important battleground for the big German luxury brands.

Couldn't find any India-specific data but they mention this:

Quote:
Jaguar Land Rover's global performance for the full year 2014 shows a balanced portfolio with sales up across all key regions: 122,010 in the China Region, up 28%; 96,505 for Overseas, up 1%; 86,310 in Europe, up 3%; 82,872 in the UK, up 7% and 74,981 in North America, up 2%.

Land Rover had its best ever year with sales reaching 381,108, up 9% year-on-year. The company sold more Range Rovers, Range Rover Sports and Range Rover Evoques in 2014 than ever before, on the back of continued strong customer demand.

Jaguar sales were up 6% for the year, retailing 81,570 vehicles. The F-TYPE, which has just completed its first full year of sales, continues to raise brand awareness around the world. The XF consistently drives Jaguar volumes and in 2014 has recorded its best year of sales to date. This is Jaguar's strongest full year performance in nearly a decade.

The difference between a small JLR and BMW is the same as that between BMW & Audi. BMW is slowly finding itself in no-mans land!

Must say, BMW today is no longer the sharp & aggressive player it was 4 years back. Then, it used to fight tooth & nail with Mercedes & Audi. In comparison, they appear complacent & lazy today.

Not to forget, BMW has no appealing products below the 3-Series. Merc has the CLA & GLA, while Audi has the A3 & Q3.

But how many of the sales numbers are contributed by these starting models? For a fact, I am yet to spot a single A3 or GLA on the roads yet. I think the battle is still between the conventional models i.e. 3 vs A4 vs C and higher up. BMW is specially losing the race when it comes to the SUV market where till recently it was being single handedly ruled by the Q5 and Q7 but off late a lot of MLs and GLs have started coming on roads. Infact I would not be surprised if Volvo sells more XC60 than BMW X3.

On the contrary I think the starting/entry level models are the ones making a big difference. And with the launch of CLA, its going get even better. And BMW in my opinion, goofed up big time with the 1-series. I feel the A3/Q3 and A-Class/GLA were the key contributors to the numbers garnered by Audi and Mercedes respectively.

And thinking of it, if entry-level models were not the differentiator, BMW should have a big advantage in the 3/A4/C segment. The 3 was the most current model amongst the three, C-class was in its last leg, and A4 has been on an old-age marathon for a good couple of years. And the 3 probably was the biggest seller from BMW last year. Because in all other segments they're really lacking at the moment.

I have not come across any reliability issues with BMW AFAIK, A.S.S is some times an issue but if you compare the A.S.S. of Audi, its far better.
Mercedes offers different trim levels in accordance to engine size. So, the S500 is way better loaded than the S350. The E350 has more features than the E250.

BMW does suffer on reliability. Not just in India, but worldwide. They have reduced the niggles that previous generation models had, but it lags behind Mercedes and Audi when it comes to reliability.

Also, Audi's ASS is the worst of the three. They take 2 days just for a regular service. They also try too fleece customers frequently. I know this through experience and through people I know. Basically, they do what all VW group service centres do.

BMW used to offer excellent BSI plans, which separated them from Audi and Merc. But, they changed these plans recently and have priced them horrendously, with lesser support.

BMW basically shot itself in the foot by taking the decisions it took in the past couple of years, maybe out of complacency, or out of greed.

These figures could be misleading. The only model that brought in numbers for the Mini was the Countryman CKD version. However, there was no production of this model done in 2014. Hence the figure of 2013 of 400 odd units is actually including the sales they did in 2014. Thus they have not mentioned 2014 figures in the article that was published just last week.

2015 is going to be a bad year for the mini as they have siezed production of the countryman to promote the CBU the all new 5 door mini. The Countryman is a lot more spacious and cheaper than the new mini 5 door. I doubt this model will bring in even half the numbers of the countryman. They ought to take on the production of the CKD countryman that is currently completely sold out in India.
