Chevrolet Spin MPV caught testing in Gujarat. EDIT: Will NOT be launched

Thank you to Team-BHP fan Raaj Patel who sent these pics in. Heartfelt gratitude for sharing them with other enthusiasts!

Spy shots have just emerged of the Chevrolet Spin MPV on test in India. The images were snapped on the Vadodara-Halol toll road near Vadodara, Gujarat. The Spin is a 7-seater MPV and already on offer in markets like Indonesia and the Philippines. Speculations of an Indian launch have been on for a while and if launched here, the Spin will take on rivals like the Honda Mobilio and Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. In all probability, it will replace the long faltering Chevrolet Enjoy.

The Spin's length x width x height dimensions come in at 4,360 mm x 1,735 mm x 1,683 mm. It has a 2,620 mm wheelbase and has a ground clearance of around 157 mm. The kerb weight ranges from 1,213 kgs - 1,277 kgs depending on the variant.

Up front, it gets an independent McPherson strut with stabilizer and coil springs suspension set up with a semi-independent torsion beam with stabilizer and coil springs set up at the back. Stopping power is provided by ventilated disc brakes up front and drum brakes at the back. The spin rides on 195/65 R16 tyres and gets a rack & pinion type hydraulic power assisted steering system.

Thanks to Maaz Vora for sharing this video:

Engine options in global markets include a 1.2L 4 cylinder DOHC 16 valve dual VVTi petrol that makes 85 BHP @ 5,600 rpm and 115 Nm of torque @ 4,000 rpm, along with a 1.5L petrol that makes 107.5 BHP @ 6,000 rpm and 142 Nm of torque @ 3,800 rpm. The Spin also gets a 1.3L 4 cylinder common-rail direct injection turbo-diesel engine that produces 74 BHP @ 4,000 rpm and 190 Nm of torque @ 1,750 rpm. If the output figures look familiar, it's because the Sail sold in India uses the same engine. If GM does plan to launch the Spin in India, it is this engine that they will focus on. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic.

The available feature list includes a remote key, power front and rear windows, adjustable headrests on all 3 rows, 3 point retractable seat belts on all three rows (2pt for 2nd row centre seat), 60:40 split tumble second row seats, an infotainment system with 4 speakers and radio/aux/usb/Bluetooth (audio streaming as well) support and more.

Prices in Indonesia range from 171,200,000 Rupiah to 219,000,000 Rupiah (Approximately Rs 8.40 Lakh to Rs 10.74 Lakh)

Isn't the 157mm Ground clearance on the lower side considering the 16" shoes? I know the size of tyres/wheels has nothing to do with it, but not sure if that's good enough for a MPV on Indian roads, especially when it's loaded with passengers and luggage.

So India is about to get a proper and proportionate MPV unlike the sub 4m products. If it is priced well (similar to the case of Sail sedan which is little over 4m but priced almost same as sub 4m sedans) it should boost the sales figures of GM in India.

Thank God, GM didn't touch anything here to save few bucks.

Since Spin is based on a different platform (sail) I doubt GM will phase out the Enjoy. Instead they may give further stripe down version (???) to the taxi market.

It may be customized for Indian conditions with a little taller suspension (same as Fiat Punto / Linea case) 157mm for such a long wheel base will have a tough time in India.

Looks interesting. It will succeed if it has a diesel +auto tranny option. Otherwise the general public will just choose to ignore this and go with the Ertiga/Mobilio/Lodgy.

This is good news. Now Chevy can attack the Taxi market with the Enjoy and keep this one for the private customer.

re: Chevrolet Spin MPV caught testing in Gujarat. EDIT: Will NOT be launched

Great scoop! GM India's portfolio continues its diversity with this MPV, over and above the Japanese Tavera, Korean Cruze + Beat + Captiva & Chinese Sail + Enjoy. Truly, an MNC (multi-national corporation) .

The Spin looks weird from some angles, unlike the good-looking Mobilio & very neutral Ertiga. It's heavier than the Honda & Maruti, and has the least powerful engines (1.2P / 1.3D). The wheelbase is the shortest of the 3 (legroom disadvantage??), although the car is the widest of the lot. Going by GM India's lack of aggression & focus, Maruti & Honda shouldn't be worried. It'll be nice to have another option in the segment, but going by international reviews, I don't think the Spin is going to be a segment-topper in anyway.

I wouldn't worry about it. Most cars get more GC before they're launched here. The India-spec model is jacked up.

Doesn't look promising.
Surely will not put the charts on fire or takeaway any share from Maruti or Honda; in fact may just pull prospects from the Chevy showroom to one of these.

All the best GM. Pls think something different and act fast.

This sounds logical since it is based on the GM Gamma II platform which is same as the SAIL.

They should also be looking at the Trax, which is a compact SUV which goes against the Ecosport in Brazil.

The engines do sound disappointing unless GM is able to undercut the Ertiga and Mobilio.

Why can't they power it with the 90hp version of the 1.3 Multijet? How hard can it be? This looks pretty okay to be, even the interiors are nice and functional. The only fly in the ointment are the engines.

IMO, if Spin is going to launch any time soon, it might rather bring an end to the aging Tavera (10 years now?). For past few years, Chevrolet has been really trying to push Tavera as a "premium" product and shed the taxi image without much success, the huge recall didn't help either. Enjoy too was aimed for commercial segment from starting.

It would be only logical and high time that a new proper MPV was launched instead of pushing a decade old design. Now, the December figures for Tavera also seeming suspicious..

Ah the sunrises again, maybe for GM if they are launching this quickly enough. On the car ofcourse it is way to early and it is far too heavily disguised to really get a sense of anything but the dimensions , the way it is standing on the the road and the general 'vibe' of the length and breadth dimensions seem to make it appear good!

re: Chevrolet Spin MPV caught testing in Gujarat. EDIT: Will NOT be launched

They should have launched it way back instead of Enjoy !!

Exterior design looks dated(stretched beat!!) but the interior seems to be loaded. At least good to see GM is not giving up on India yet.

But its a bit too late considering Ertiga facelift is due and Mobilio already selling well. Hyundai will anyway launch a best of both worlds MPV and there will be no takers for this Chevy

re: Chevrolet Spin MPV caught testing in Gujarat. EDIT: Will NOT be launched

This is what GM India should have launched in the first place instead of the China-sourced Enjoy. The specs aren't impressive but if GM prices this right, it should bring in decent volumes like what the Tavera managed during its heydays. Maruti-Suzuki and Honda need not worry though as the private buyers aren't going to look beyond them.

By the way, why not bring in the Trax compact crossover to challenge the Ecosport and the spate of pseudo-crossovers that are flooding the market?

re: Chevrolet Spin MPV caught testing in Gujarat. EDIT: Will NOT be launched

The Beat'ish front look and the 'okay' back side seems to make a decent looking MPV from Chevrolet. The Renault Lodgy gets a straight competitor and i think Chevrolet realize that their actual target is the Lodgy and not the Mobilio/Ertiga. Keeping smaller attainable goals and accomplishing them, may boost confidence in both, Chevrolet and their prospective buyers.

Regards to premiumness, i do feel the Spin is definitely above the Tavera and Enjoy. Both the Tavera and Enjoy have largely been viewed as the mass-market people carrier vehicles and the Spin might want to carve out a niche for itself with the private buyers.
