Jan 2018 seems to be pretty late, if that is the release timeframe. The competition would have grown stronger by then. Perhaps, this is a typo? Hopefully, the Feb 2016 Indian Auto Expo may shed some light on this.

Thanks for the update , im curious to know if we are going to get the existing Vios which is available in Indonesia, Thailand etc. or the Next Gen Vios. Current gen is already 3 years old so might not be the best idea to launch that here. Autocar claims it will the next gen Vios. Lets see

The other option is for Toyota take a longer view and look at launching a hybrid version of the next-gen Vios, slated to be brought to India some time next year.

re: Scoop! Toyota Vios caught testing in Bangalore Edit: it's the Yaris Ativ

N Raja, senior vice president, sales division, Toyota Kirloskar Motor, has disclosed that they are indeed planning to introduce a sedan within the next 3-4 years time to plug the gap between the Etios and the Corolla Altis sedans.

He also specified that it will be global platform-based car for the entire Asia-Pacific region, and not limited to the Indian market alone.

Quote:
“Our priority is to keep our customers with us. We have given feedback to our parent company. They have identified the gap between Etios and Corolla Altis, which is huge. They are working on bridging this gap,” N Raja, senior vice president, sales division, Toyota Kirloskar Motor told FE.

He said the company is working on identifying a model that can be introduced in India between the Etios and Corolla Altis. “It will be a global platform not just for India but for the entire Asia Pacific markets,” he said.

Admitting that Toyota has been a slow mover in the Indian passenger car market in terms of introducing newer models compared to the competition, Raja said, “We will study the market thoroughly and bring out new models as and when necessary.”

“Our parent (Toyota Motor Corp, Japan) is working on a new sedan model. Normally, any model development and launch will take 3-4 years time,” he added.
Seems like it won't be the existing Vios, but maybe an all-new model based on the Vios platform.

Don't expect this C2-segment Toyota offering before 2020, though.

Hope Toyota follows the Maruti model and goes CS way for Etios. Slide in the new sedan like the Ciaz and put in a AT (preferably with Diesel as well) and watch the sales hit peak.

re: Scoop! Toyota Vios caught testing in Bangalore Edit: it's the Yaris Ativ

By the time Toyota gets the Vios here it will be too late, the market would already have Honda's facelifted City, Hyundai's next gen. Verna and we can expect some weird limited edition of the Ciaz by Maruti, because that is what they do when they are out of ideas to beat their competitors.

Going by the spy shots, it looks good. The rear doors seem to be quite big, possible that it may offer the best legroom in class, this 'lambi gaadi' feeling may attract a lot of buyers. The launch date may be far away because Toyota must be busy on the new Fortuner, afterall along with the Innova these two cars are sold at a huge premuim.

re: Scoop! Toyota Vios caught testing in Bangalore Edit: it's the Yaris Ativ

As per the quoted article, Toyota has already started working on the new model. We have been seeing the next generation Vios being tested here from the last one year. Now, obviously developing a car will take time and I am quite sure even though it's going to be a global model changes would be made according to the market. As per a couple of friends working in the industry, Toyota is indeed launching an all new sedan in the 8 - 12 lakh range by the end of 2018 and as per them the progress is on schedule. The car is expected to feature on the 2018 Auto Expo too. Fingers Crossed!

Our market has shown its ready for disruption, if from a good manufacturer. Case in point Verna, Creta and Brezza. People are still going to be buying C-Segment sedans and 3-4 years from now, and the pull that Toyota has, it will ensure that if the car is decent, there will be significant number of buyers.

Till then, expect Ciaz and City to continue their rule, with a chance of Hyundai launching a formidable Verna next year.

They are touting it as a DZire-competitor, while the Vios is expected to vy in the City/Ciaz/Verna/Vento segment instead.

Yes. I was also wondering about this. Which segment will it address? I think as per pricing etios is already below vento/verna segment. So this should be positioned to compete with them.

A single unit of the Toyota Vios has been imported from Thailand for R&D purposes, in white shade and sporting a 1300cc petrol engine.

re: Scoop! Toyota Vios caught testing in Bangalore Edit: it's the Yaris Ativ

Great find! The Vios outsells it's competitors combined in some southeast Asian markets. It's a solid package.

I think the 1.3 might not come to India for two reasons:
1. The 1.3 isn't powerful and won't really have any tax benefits. Most taxis in SE Asia use the 1.3.
2. The 1.5 producing 107 PS is the engine required when you're competing with the city which produces 118 PS.

I'm think they'll carry over the 88BHP diesel from the Altis with a 5 speed MT.

re: Scoop! Toyota Vios caught testing in Bangalore Edit: it's the Yaris Ativ

I'm currently in the Philippines and the number of Toyota Vios on the streets is simply outstanding - more than 80% of the taxis are the Vios. Additionally, a very popular choice among the private buyers too.
IMHO it would do well in the Indian market as:
1) It looks like a mini Altis and hence will appeal to the general crowd
2) Great Interiors (contrary to the Etios which I think was one of the key reasons why it did not do very well)
3) Toyota reliability and low maintenance

Only remains to be seen what engine they plonk in it before launching it in India. The 1.5 petrol from the Etios I think would be the primary choice. As correctly pointed out by landcruiser123, the 1.3 does duty over here.
