Honda halts dispatches of Mobilio, Brio, CR-V

Honda has halted the dispatches of cars manufactured at its Greater Noida plant after they were damaged by paint fumes from an adjoining factory.

More than 4,000 units of the Mobilio, the Brio and the CR-V, which were manufactured last month, are believed to have been affected. These vehicles were parked in an open stockyard. An under-construction factory, adjacent to the Honda plant, was being painted and fumes emerging from the paint caused spots to be formed on the cars, particularly on the chrome and plastic parts and roof tops.

Honda claims to be taking the necessary steps to ensure rectification of the problem, including change of parts wherever required. With dispatches to dealers stopped, the company is staring at a pile-up of inventory at its plant.

The Greater Noida plant has a yearly manufacturing capacity of 1.2 lakh units.

Would such acts be covered under their insurance? Also, being India, would they try to sue the neighbour?

Aah, this will surely throw the spanner in the works and further delay the already delayed Jazz launch ...

While the concern for the cars' paint job is appreciated from Honda, I am wondering what kind of paint was used by the 'neighboring factory' that could blister automotive grade paint/plastics.

What if we were to inhale something like that! Echoing some of the sentiments in this thread already, can Honda sue it's neighbors?

This is a serious issue and dealers will try to sell such models along with some freebies. All potential buyers and those awaiting delivery, please take note of this and examine/PDI your cars in daylight carefully before giving the go ahead to the SA. Though some plastics and chrome bits can be replaced at the factory itself before dispatching, the body could be touched up by the dealer.

I highly doubt Honda or any good company for that matter will leave its cars at dealers' discretion. It would be a big negative if hundreds of their cars are found with inferior finish. Honda commands a premium in India and any such step would be downright foolish.

Also, it would be simpler if Honda does it at the plant. It would not only ensure speed and consistency but also bring in economies of scale.
