Re: Rumour: Next-gen Maruti Alto to get 658cc turbo-petrol

Maruti will only bring the turbo-petrol if it's forced to because of emission norms. Remember, it's Maruti and we're talking small cars here. The A-segment is incredibly cost / price sensitive.

If it has a mild turbo (which I'm sure it will), lag won't be an issue. Consider the Zest Revotron petrol, it actually offers you better driveability than the diesel. Excellent low-end torque delivery

Fuel-economy & emissions mainly. This isn't a segment looking for power, so the engine could be tuned on these lines.

Maruti can afford to pay royalty on a diesel engine for its 6 lakh rupee Swift & 7 lakh rupee Dzire, but the profit margins on a 3 lakh Alto are too slim to allow a licence fee. And when Suzuki already has experience with small turbo-petrols, there's no reason for it to be sourced from other manufacturers.

Re: Rumour: Next-gen Maruti Alto to get 658cc turbo-petrol

Suzuki released the new Alto Turbo RS on March 11. Exterior ( side profile) looks similar to the concept of iM -4 realesed at Geneva on March 3rd.

Quote:
The Alto Turbo RS is a competent model that has a sporty run. Aside from its excellent performance, its interior and exterior parts are also furnished with exclusive materials that boost its sporty image.
In terms of safety, aside from the standard Radar Brake Support, false start suppression function, emergency stop signal and ESP, it also uses a lightweight shock absorbing body for absorption and dispersion of shock during collisions

Re: Rumour: Next-gen Maruti Alto to get 658cc turbo-petrol

As most manufactures (Renault, Datsun)are eyeing the entry level segment, Maruti the leader in this segment seeks ways to defend its position.

Next gen Alto to get 658CC with 38 KM/L - Now spied in India. This engine could come in two states of tune, a non-VVT equipped version for lower level and a high-output turbocharged version.

Rumour: Next-gen Maruti Alto to get 658cc turbo-petrol-marutialto658ccrearview.jpg

Next Gen Alto is speculated to be displayed at the Auto expo 2016.

Quote:
The new Alto will be based on a new platform that will be used by many of Maruti’s future cars. This new platform will be based on the new Suzuki Alto (seen for the first time in India) which currently is sold in Japan. This new platform is much lighter than the current Alto and this weight-reduction will result in better fuel economy numbers.
The car spied is the latest version of the Suzuki Alto sold in Japan which was launched late last year. As far as styling goes, this car is downright boxy and may not suit Indian mass-market tastes.
Quote:
Maruti is likely to keep the basic design of this car and modify it “according to Indian tastes”. This new Suzuki Alto measures more or less the same as the Alto 800 sold in our market, however Maruti “may extend” the wheelbase for better legroom for the second row passengers
The next-gen Alto could join the downsizing club and may feature the 658cc powertrain that is sold in the Japanese Alto. This motor could come in two states of tune, a non-VVT equipped version for lower level and a high-output turbocharged version. Maruti will use the next-gen Alto with AMT gearbox along with a standard manual transmission.

It produces 48 bhp in non-VVT form and 51 bhp when combined with VVT technology.

The Japanese Alto does around 38km in one liter of petrol and our source confirms Indian car will either manage the same fuel economy figure or even excel that.

The overall proportions and the side profile are pretty good, in my opinion. A bit of the Volkswagen Up! influence is visible, which is not a bad thing at all.

It's the styling of the front and rear that need improvement. That crazy asymmetrical grille and retro headlamp cluster won't find too many admirers in India. The rear needs a thorough redesign. The hatch is reminiscent of the Fiat Uno and the tail-lamps look like they've been lifted straight from a mini-truck.

With a sharp looking front & rear redesign, the car can be transformed into a looker.

I also welcome the 3-cylinder 658cc engine with variable valve timing & a turbo-charger. It should be as good as (if not better) than the current 796cc motor, as long as they get the low-end responses and gearing spot on. FE is a crucial factor in this segment, and the little 0.66 lit. triple should do very well on this count, more so if it comes with a stop-start feature.

Looks well-proportioned, and far far better than the current gen awkward-looking Alto breed in India.

But if introduced in India, they will surely get rid of those classic-type head-tail lamps, and may come up with something like this:

May be I'm one of the stereotyped Indians you tried to portray but I actually liked your photoshopped tail lights better than the original design!

Re: Rumour: Next-gen Maruti Alto to get 658cc turbo-petrol

The side rear window design makes it very catastrophic inside. One of the big drawbacks carried forward from the Swift.

Overall design is a mix of Wagon-R and Alto liberating more interior space than the current Alto.

Re: Rumour: Next-gen Maruti Alto to get 658cc turbo-petrol

Next-gen Alto to be lighter and safer - To be launched in 2017.

Maruti suzuki has embarked R&D on the next-generation Alto already, and the new hatchback will lighter, safer, powerful and a lot more environment-friendly as well. The new Alto will be based on Japan’s Alto Kei, which is the eighth-generation of this hatchback.

This development comes as the new crash norms and emission norms are being implemented. The new Alto will be a lot lighter than the current-generation by at least 60 kilograms, which is about 10 percent reduction.

Quote:
Quote:
The new Alto will pass all the crash tests and will be safer too. The Alto has more than 45 percent of high tensile steel that makes it stronger and lighter
The Alto will be powered by a 658cc engine (codenamed as R06A) could come in two states of tune, one will be with turbo and other without. On the new Alto, the 658cc will produce about 53bhp and the turbo version will produce about 62bhp. There will also a VVT (variable valve timing) version of this engine.
These will be implemented for the emission norms and even better fuel efficiency. The Alto will have ARAI fuel efficiency in excess of 32km/l. There will be an AMT (automated manual transmission) as well.
The length of the new Alto will remain same at 3395mm, however the design will be tweaked by the Indian team to suit the taste of the Indian car buyers.

Re: Rumour: Next-gen Maruti Alto to get 658cc turbo-petrol

Oh! God. Another striking design disaster from Maruti. They are really a bunch of confident guys who think whatever they throw at us will sell like anything. How on earth can they come up with a car that looks like this. So ugly and hilarious. I can't point to a single portion of the car and say yeah it looks nice. Regarding the engine, I think we are moving towards a world where cars will have 500cc engines and bikes will have 1000cc engines. Strange world this.

On a related note, they could bring something like this retro car (Reliant Robin) instead of their space age Alto. Looks more classy and it will save them the cost of a tyre.

Honestly speaking, while this isn't a looker by any means, I prefer such honest, simple, clean lines compared to a lot of other designs. There is also a huge scope for personalisation and customisation with such designs

Does this really deliver 38km/litre ? would make people buy it in hordes if it delivers even 30 kmpl. I guess the present alto800 delivers 18kmpl mostly. How does it achive such a high efficiency ?

Just going to be released in Japan it has the 658 cc three-cylinder engine with 52 PS and 63 Nm (46 lb-ft) of torque. It has also a CVT transmission, tilt steering wheel, touchscreen infotainment with sat nav, rear parking camera, and an active safety system stops the car to a halt at speeds up to 30 km/h (18 mph) if a radar in the rearview mirror detects an imminent crash.

Quote:
Being a kei car, only four people fit inside the 3,395 mm long and 1,475 mm wide Suzuki Alto Lapin. Weight is up to 730 kg (1,609 lbs) for the range-topping all-wheel drive model.
