Really liked how you've compared Nissan Kicks with i20. You're right that it is at best a bigger i20 with nice cosmetic touches. But this is actually a Terrano (a failed car in India) packaged as Kicks. Terrano was a rebadged Duster. So it will come with better electronics however the engine is the same old Terrano engine (noisy and high NVH) which is no where in comparison to more refined and more powerful engines that you are likely to find in other Compact SUVs.

Apart from a very few selected forums/websites/portals, I haven’t seen any major interest or discussion around this product anywhere else. I’m confused at Nissan’s marketing strategy here. Are they planning to start the booking option silently? Or are they planning to have full page advertisements across all the newspapers on the same day expecting the prospects to just plonk the money?

I think they should probably start having better marketing campaigns to introduce the cars before they start the bookings. It might be disappointing for the Nissan folks if they did not get the expected market response.

Look at Tata, they have been releasing teasers about the Harrier for quite some time and I’m sure that there is a lot of interest around that product in the market already.

The only real-world advertisement I've seen so far is a meh 'Coming Soon' poster/billboard outside the Nissan showroom on Cubbon Road (next to the Merc place). It's going to take a lot to sell this car, esp. in the Creta bracket, and Nissan don't even appear to be trying in earnest.

Nissan Kicks production begins

Earlier this year, Nissan unveiled the India-spec Kicks SUV. The carmaker has now announced the start of production after the first vehicle rolled off the production line in Chennai. The Nissan Kicks is slated for launch in January 2019.



The Nissan Kicks uses a body structure called as Gravity-philic Energy Absorption (GRAPHENE), which is claimed to absorb impacts and make the car safer in an event of a crash. The SUV features a V-motion chrome grille at the front flanked by LED projector headlights with U-shaped LED DRLs. The dual-tone front bumper houses a pair of rectangular fog lamps and a silver scuff plate.

At the rear, the Kicks comes with wraparound tail lights and a dual-tone rear bumper with silver inserts. It comes with a contrast colour roof, roof rails, shark fin antenna and 17-inch, 5-spoke machined alloy wheels.

In India, the Kicks is expected to be offered with dual-tone interiors with a touchscreen infotainment system and 360-degree camera.

Nissan is expected to offer the Kicks with a choice of petrol and diesel engines. However, detailed specifications are not yet known.

Had a chance to take a close look, did not allow me to see the interiors though.

Unless Nissan is going to price it substantially lower than the Renault Captur, it is not going to have any impact in the market especially on the Creta.

I absolutely agree, a failed pricing strategy and they can keep all the production cars in their own backyard. Gone are the days of Duster; which enjoyed traction in the market due to lack of competition.

They have to first generate interest in the machine (Tata's did it successfully for Harrier) whereas Kicks is not there on buyers radar. A welcoming price can only save it.

This looks like the Duster in yet another skin. Duster, Terrano, Captur all were essentially the same vehicle (same platform, engine, gearbox), just different body panels and dashboards. They all seem to drive and handle similarly and possess the same ergonomic kinks! Not sure what is the vale of yet another car, with the same ageing engine and internals.
