Since the launch of the Maruti Suzuki Celerio, Magneti Marelli has gained popularity for its Automated Manual Transmission units in India. Due to their cost effectiveness, efficiency and convenience, demand for AMT equipped cars like the Alto K10 and Zest diesel has risen. Since supply of these units failed to keep up with their demand, customers are facing long waiting periods.

Earlier we had reported, how Maruti was working with Magneti Marelli to increase production from 3,000 units to 5,000 units a month; thus reducing waiting periods. In 2014, 27,000 units were sold to original equipment manufacturers. At an investment of Rs. 150 crores, the Italian company has set up a new manufacturing facility for automated manual transmissions at Manesar, Haryana. By the third quarter of FY16, the capacity is expected to reach 2,00,000 units. Also, localization levels are expected to reach a 100%, thus, keeping the costs in check. Currently, these units are being imported.

The AMT manufacturer is now seeking to double its revenue in the country from 160 million euros (~Rs. 11,000 crores) to 400 million euros (~Rs. 2,800 crores), over the next three years. It also expects its Indian subsidiary's contribution to its global revenue to rise from 2% to 4% by 2018.

At present, these AMT units are supplied to Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors. By the end of this year, two more customers are expected to use these transmissions.

I'd say, with time, AMTs can easily exceed 2 lakh units a year. The demand is currently restricted only by supplies. Once they're available locally, we'll be seeing AMTs in a far wider range of cars. AMTs are cheap to buy and are more fuel-efficient than torque-converter ATs. That, combined with the fact that our driving conditions are just ideal for automatics, makes the case for AMTs incredibly strong.

Best part about the AMT is that it can be bolted onto just any engine overnight. There's no need for manufacturers to design a new transmission from the ground up. Diesel AMTs will rock the mass market segment.

We haven't see too many diesel ATs in the sub-10 lakh segment because no one was willing to invest big $$$ on a transmission that still has minuscule levels of market-share. Europe - where most of our hatchbacks come from - is an MT market, while the biggest AT country internationally - the USA - is primarily a petrol market.

Fiat Chrysler exploring $3.3 billion sale of auto parts unit Magneti Marelli

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is considering whether to sell its auto parts maker Magneti Marelli after receiving interest from potential buyers.

A recent offer, by a group including a US buyout fund and valuing the business at less than 2.5 billion euros ($2.7 billion), was rebuffed in June as FCA would not agree to sell for less than 3 billion euros

This unit is worth around 2 billion euros and could appeal to global players such as Valeo, Hella, Koido and Stanley,Asian players could also make a move, another source said, pointing to China's Wanxiang Group as a possible bidder

Marchionne is in no rush to sell Magneti Marelli and will be picky when choosing a buyer to ensure a stable future supply of components to FCA plants,

Beefier and stronger clutch coupled with precise shifting will keep the AMT running trouble free if bolted onto to a diesel engine. I am not sure what more changes would Maruti need to do if they add AMT on the Swift 1.3L DDiS.

That torque figures will confuse the AMT!stupid:

Great to hear that Magneti Marelli is targeting 2lakh AMTs and has set up plant at Manesar. With supply constraints removed, we can hopefully get AMT in the Swift and the Ciaz diesels.

I would advice Fiat Chrysler Automobiles to hold on to this cash cow since it can safely be garnered that the company will have exponential profits as AMTs would have a ready market in almost all developing countries with chaotic traffic conditions.
