That indeed looks like DRL which, if true, is a new for a car in this segment.

re: Renault's Kwid entry level hatchback unveiled EDIT: Now launched at Rs. 2.57 lakhs!

alright, just confirmed from Infinteloop that those are not DRLs. what you see is the reflection on a chrome outline inside the headlight assembly. the test vehicle didn't even have fog lamps.

other points noted by him:
  • it will have a 800cc motor
  • spacious
  • seems to have a solid build and looks much safer
  • higher ground clearance
  • and in his own words - it will eat up the Alto!

re: Renault's Kwid entry level hatchback unveiled EDIT: Now launched at Rs. 2.57 lakhs!

This month's Autocar magazine has an interview with Carlos Ghosn. When asked about the Kwid's safety, he says -

"This is a competitive game, so it's not about making a perfect car. You want to give the customer the best he can get. On the other hand, you could pass the test held by all the agencies of the world, but then you can't sell it. You will collect all the awards, but not money. And we are not in the business of collecting awards; we are in the business of growing the company and growing our revenue."

So it's clear that the Kwid won't be any different from other cars in its class when it comes to safety.

Question is, will it be as bad as the Go?

Really disappointing to hear. Hes saying as if its not possible to sell safe cars. It weighs just 700 kgs so dont expect anything better.

Even Maruti 800, was of 650 Kg, it ran well for around 20 + years, it was one of the best selling car. Even tata nano also weights 700 Kg. I think what he meant is within that price range (3-4 lakhs) not possible to sell safety kits like ABS and Airbags.

Saw the Renault Captur in flesh yesterday, and the Kwid's rear looks similar to its bigger sibling. Overall, this is car that has taken the fight to Maruti's steps. Would be interesting to see how it's received.

Meanwhile, is the Eon in for an upgrade?

Ya I agree. Its a shame that such a potent looking car is expected to be a city car like Nano. Add couple of lakhs to price if need be but please make it beefy. This begs to be taken on highways.

A top end @ 4.00 ex showroom Delhi would hint @ 4.7ish on road in major metros. Would Renault be able to take the fight in the i10 1.1 and the WagonR, Alto K10 with its 0.8L offering which are priced lower or nearly the same assuming all discounts on offer.

They should atleast offer it as a paid option like Toyota does, for people who have the budget and willing to pay for it.

It might be difficult to offer customized/on-demand options on such a low cost offering. This is especially true for a company which plans to keep operating costs very low to sustain the low sticker price for the car.

On a second thought, making changes to accommodate airbags and ABS might be proving expensive for them too. And since the demand for such variants will be very low, they would have foregone these essential features. At the end of the day, price is going to be its USP. They must go to any extent to ensure a low price tag, without affecting their profitability.

Toyota doesn't have budget entry level cars. And I remember reading somewhere that they won't get into that segment as they can't match the prevailing prices.

My 2 cents.

I had the same thought. Would gladly be willing to pay for additional safety features for the good looking small car. But it would depend on how many modifications they will need to make to include safety features, considering the frugal system they have put in place to keep its price low.

Even a couple of airbags (new steering wheel, adjusted right dashboard) should suffice for starters, in an option pack with some more features. Hopefully, sense should prevail once numbers are in and feedback is received.

Remember reading that a Driver side airbag would be provided as an option on the Kwid.

They should consider dual airbags as an option too. Trust those sold off on the option of airbags would prefer dual instead of only the driver's airbag.

We would have to wait till full features and specifications are revealed variant wise.

re: Renault's Kwid entry level hatchback unveiled EDIT: Now launched at Rs. 2.57 lakhs!

The Renault Kwid will get a bigger 1.0L petrol engine as well, as well as an optional AMT box, according to ACI.

Quote:
Renault plans to keep the Kwid 'fresh' even after launch, by introducing a new variant every few months.

It is also readying a more-powerful 1.0-litre motor for the Kwid, which will be included in the line-up around six to eight months after the launch of the 800cc version. This motor will be featured in the sportier Kwid and like the 800cc version, will come with the option of an AMT gearbox, along with the standard manual transmission.

The new AMT gearbox will be developed in-house by Renault to keep costs in check.
