That would be like 2 steps backward, since that engine dates back to the Indica with a CI block and alloy head. I do hope though that it would be an inline 4 rather than the triple from the Tiago/Nexon.

Autocar reports it is likely to be named Aquila. Aquila means Eagle in roman, so quite a possibility!

re: Tata developing a premium hatchback, codenamed "X451". EDIT : Named Altroz

What's in a name!? I am more uncomfortable by reading that it may be a detuned engine with a 5 speed gearbox. Tata can try any gimmick, but without a good engine and a proper automatic it cannot hope to "redefine" the "urban car"

I don't think this will be a major deal breaker.
If the engine in the ALTROZ churns out 90ps/200Nm, this will be exactly the same figures generated by NEXON in CITY mode.

Thus, one can safely assume that TML has not detuned the engine, but has "kept hidden" the SPORT mode ECU map of NEXON which delivers 110Ps/250Nm.
Also, since the ALTROZ is aimed at the i20 and the rest, expect a kerb weight in the region of 1.1-1.2 tons.
Throw in some clever gear ratios and accessing that 200Nm /90ps might actually be quite easy.

What i assume may happen, is that the max rev limit may be pegged a notch lower, maybe at 4.9-5k revs, in the interests of powertrain longevity and fuel economy.

Let's wait and watch.

A friend of mine wrote "Altroz sounds like an antibiotic tablet. And what does the sedan version be called? Altrozin?"

If it was inspired by Albatross bird, Albatross itself would've been a good choice IMO. Altroz sounds too much like Alto to me!

When an engine's higher state of tune is not made available as stock, it will be detuned version only in my books.
90bhp is certainly "adequate" and par for the segment. But, after a high pitch marcom if they end up giving us 90bhp (when 110 bhp version is already available) then for me it's a dampner. You can't redefine a segment by giving what is already there. You need to exceed expectations.

Specifications aren't out yet. No point in speculating.

Also, just specifications doesn't make or break a product. It's the user experience that's matter.

I'm sure TATA knows the importance of this premium hatchback segment- so I hope they'll put in enough resources to get this one right.

Tata Altroz spied.

These alloys look too simple for this car. Does Impact 2.0 not have scope for dual tone diamond cut alloys? First Harrier and then Altroz.

re: Tata developing a premium hatchback, codenamed "X451". EDIT : Named Altroz

If the 45X is 90 BHP and 200 Nm, Tata is positioning their lineup in the given hierarchy - Hatch < Compact Sedan < Premium Hatch < CSUV < SUV& MPV. The Micro SUV and full size sedan will squeeze their space inside the lineup.

But why is Premium Hatch less powerful than CSUV? They should have been equal. JTP 45X will surely be a killer.

Who said it was 90 bhp and 200 nm?

As usual this will degenerate into presume and prevaricate, rather than experience and evaluate.

All this based on concept images and a couple of sketches.

re: Tata developing a premium hatchback, codenamed "X451". EDIT : Named Altroz

A tata fan boy all my life and am excited for the 45x. My wish list for the 45x would be
a. New engines and transmissions (both Manual and Auto)
b. Standard Safety Features - 5 3 point belts, 6 airbags, ABS, rear defogger, wash/wipe, ISO fix seats
c. Build Quality at least on par with the VW Polo

I would rather have 6 airbags than a touch screen infotainment system - but then I do realise that is not what the public wants

Offtopic, what surprises me though is the number of different parts Tata uses for their vehicles - stuff that can be common, thereby driving higher volume and better quality like Door handles (exterior and interior), switches etc are different in each model. Surely these don't give economies of scale for the vendor and we see silly measures like feature deletion through the life of the car. Have you ever wondered how VW / Skoda have common base components across their cars?

Interesting!

From the initial impressions and looking at how fairly true Tata was to the Harrier concept in production, it really looks like this car will be quite the looker!

I sincerely hope they come up with an Automatic on launch.
I've been toying with the idea of purchasing the Nexon automatic later this year, but this might just change things for me.
