I selfishly want the Altroz to see grand success.

A lit design (subjective), amazing safety ratings, small but mighty features (ex: 90deg doors), factory-fitted customization - all these are things that I want to see in cars that are affordable to an average customer. Its heartening to see an Indian OEM leading the way. A major success will push others to catch-up.

Tata has priced it to perfection. Definitely value for money pricing for a 5* car. Hope they follow it up with automatic versions. If this doesn’t sell, it would be a sad thing for safer cars in our country. Have to give it to Tata for not giving up and go the Maruti way when it comes to safety. My next car would be a Tata or Mahindra for sure.

Re: Tata developing a premium hatchback, the Altroz. Edit: Launched at 5.29 lakh.

Rather than the price itself what caught my eye is the 70k difference between petrol and diesel. Aren't these both BS6. If that's the case then I hope Maruti suffers for the fear mongering they engaged in last year (since the government won't do anything it is up to us consumers to teach them the lesson).

Edit: oops my bad. Shouldn't have done the calculation during lunch. Thanks for the correction guys. At 1.7L, I am afraid this might not be in contention for my first car.

Here's how it fares against competition in terms of pricing.

Tata Altroz pricing compared with competitor's. i20, Baleno & Polo won't be getting the BS6 diesel.

Difference is 1.7 lacs . Was checking pricing, seem to be matching that of Baleno, infact a little more premium for top spec models. Fresh looks, Gold standard Safety, solid build or peppy and frugal engine, better reach for A.S.S. Lack of AT at launch will hurt.

Re: Tata developing a premium hatchback, the Altroz. Edit: Launched at 5.29 lakh.

I think the petrol pricing is good, but diesel pricing is a bit-off. 1.7 lac difference in ex-showroom equals to a 1.9-2 lac difference in on-road prices. In case the car is financed, you will end up paying 50-60k in interest over a period of 5 years. This combined with higher maintenance for diesels will result in a net increase of 2.7-2.8 lacs over a similarly spec petrol variant. People buying diesel variants will have to drive over 1.3 lac kms, just to break-even (not considered any difference in re-sale). This is not inspiring at all.

Re: Tata developing a premium hatchback, the Altroz. Edit: Launched at 5.29 lakh.

Very good pricing by Tata. Undercuts the competition with the competition while being the only one having a 5 star safety rating. Its shocking to know that only tata an Indian company has 5 star rated cars in this segment while none of the international players can do any better than 4 star rated cars in this segment.

Too many parameters and too much of calculations. Simply compare with the competing diesel hatchbacks. Altroz is priced lesser than most of them.

I know one must do such meticulous calculations but sometimes it is better and less stressful to buy a car you can live with for 5 years and not be more economical about it.

Altroz has everything from good design, good ride quality, safe car and all bells and whistles. Many of us have already spoken critically about their petrol engines being awful and need a JTP. So without reiterating their short comings, I feel Tata has done a fabulous job with pricing and market awareness.

Re: Tata developing a premium hatchback, the Altroz. Edit: Launched at 5.29 lakh.

To me it looks like the diesel variants are dead on arrival. Undoubtedly the specifications of the 1.5 revotorq are promising - especially the peak torque from as low as ~1200 RPM but then in that segment there are good punchy diesels that have been around for a while. 1.7L over it's petrol counterpart is hard to justify considering the current fuel pricing. Also, one has to consider that with ULSD coming by March, diesel prices may go up - reducing the gap further.

To sum it up, if I was in the market to buy a diesel hatch, it would have been the Figo/Freestyle for me.

Re: Tata developing a premium hatchback, the Altroz. Edit: Launched at 5.29 lakh.

Diesel price is higher than usual. But then, Altroz diesel's only competition is Baleno for now. i20 diesel and AT variants are being discontinued as per the news in i20 thread. Baleno diesel's case may also be uncertain in BS6 era.

Re: Tata developing a premium hatchback, the Altroz. Edit: Launched at 5.29 lakh.

Diesels are not important anymore, nobody is buying diesels in this segment.

The recent split showed that 89% of all Balenos are petrol, 87% of all Tiagos are petrol and 77% of i20s are petrol.
