Rumour: Nissan Micra XL to get CVT EDIT: Now launched at Rs. 6.4 lakhs

The Nissan Micra hatchback has been a poor seller in India, with monthly sales unable to touch four digits. However, the Japanese manufacturer has not given up on the car.

The company is rumoured to be gearing up to introduce a new variant of the Micra hatchback. This new variant will be based on the XL (base) trim level of the petrol version of the car and will come with a continuous variable transmission (CVT). It will be aimed at those looking at the convenience offered by the automatic gearbox and are not too interested in other features.

The XL CVT will use the same 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine as the XL MT. This engine produces 76 BHP and 104 Nm of torque. The car will be equipped with features such as reverse parking sensors, audio system, anti-lock braking system and a driver's side airbag.

With the introduction of automated manual transmission, the market for cheap automatic hatchbacks in India is increasing. Nissan could be trying to take advantage of this trend.

At present, the CVT is available only on the XV trim level. The XL CVT, Nissan should help the car appeal to a larger audience.

Nissan has launched the Micra XL CVT in India at a price of Rs. 6,39,990 (ex-showroom, Delhi). Till now the CVT gearbox was available only on the XV variant of the car which is priced at Rs. 6,93,100 (ex-showroom, Delhi). The new variant will make the CVT technology more affordable.

The Micra XL CVT is powered by the same 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine as the XL MT. This engine produces 76 BHP and 104 Nm of torque. The Xtronic CVT gearbox comes with Adaptive Shift Control (ASC) and Sport mode.

The car is equipped with features such as a multifunction steering wheel, driver's arm rest, anti-lock braking system, electronic brake force distribution and brake assist.

Nissan has also introduced the limited edition Micra X-Shift to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the car in India. Only 750 units of the X-Shift will be available.

The X-Shift costs the same as the regular Micra X-Shift. It gets cosmetic enhancements such as a matte black roof wrap and side decals, chrome exhaust tip, silver-finished door armrests, LED scuff plates and branded floor mats. The X-Shift is also equipped with reverse parking sensors.

More options for the AT crowd and reasonable safety features as well with ABS and Driver side airbag being standard. Hope other manufacturers follow the trend as well.

CVT will be a drag with such lower power on offer. But a good second car for those looking for the in city run about.

Get the dealerships sorted while you are at it, Nissan.

Nissan should have considered pricing it under 6 Lac thereby making it affordable by 1 Lac (on road price) as for sub 6 Lac cars, the registration and insurance would have been considerably lower.

With significant discounts offered by Dealers in any case, this step would have made it a breeze to buy.

Anyways, good that an affordable automatic has been introduced.

Also I am not sure but they should work towards brand association - Ranbir Kapoor followed by Anil Kapoor and now Kangna; how does this help in your business Nissan? when you have issues at dealer level which require proper resolution !
