Volkswagen India's exports to Mexico cross 1 lakh units

Volkswagen India has shipped its 1,00,000th car built for Mexico. The company's plant in Chakan, Pune has achieved this milestone in less than two years since it started exporting cars to the North American country.

The company claims that the Indian-built Vento sedan and Polo hatchback are in high demand in Mexico. The 1,00,000th car is a red Volkswagen Vento, powered by a 1.6-litre, petrol engine. It will take seven weeks to reach its destination.

Volkswagen India started exporting cars to Mexico with the Volkswagen Vento less than two years ago. The Vento, built at the Pune Plant, replaced the outgoing Jetta Classico in the Mexican market.

The Vento is in the top three most sold cars in Mexico in the first half of 2015. It is also Volkswagens highest-seller Volkswagen car in the country at the moment.

In 2014, nearly every second car produced at the Volkswagen Pune Plant was shipped to Mexico, which is the single largest export market for the company.

Currently Volkswagen India exports the Volkswagen Polo and Vento in right-hand as well as left-hand drive versions to over 32 countries in Asia, Africa and North America. The first single export market for Volkswagen India was South Africa in 2011.

Is it only Polo and Vento or does it contain Rapids also? I feel that this is one primary reason for VW being in profits when all others are bleeding. Nice that its a red Polo for the function.

VW India completes exports of 1.85 lakh cars in 5 years

VW India's domestic market share isn't very impressive, but the company has been using India as a base for exports. Established in 2009, Volkswagen India's plant started export operations two years after it was set up. The first shipment to South Africa from Volkswagen India reached its destination exactly five years ago in 2011. At that time, the export volumes only contributed approximately 6.4% of the total production.

In 2015, 55% of production at the brand's plant was exported and in 5 years, VW has exported 1,85,000 cars from India. The range of cars being exported includes left-hand drive as well as right-hand drive versions of the Polo and Vento. Mexico has been the single largest export market for Volkswagen India where over 80% of the export volume was shipped in 2015.

Starting with South Africa as the first export market, Volkswagen India has expanded its exports to over 35 countries across Asia, Africa, North America and South America.

Good to see VW doing good in other emerging markets, hoping that they regain their chi and start to revamp their Indian operations.

Re: VW India completes exports of 1.85 lakh cars in 5 years

If VW have exported 185,000 cars that could be about US$1.5 to 2.0 billion of forex earned for India. Good for them, Good for the country and not to mention the jobs created. I wonder if they also export the related spares which could add more to the forex earned.
