Snip-----< Tax gas guzzlers: Petro panel

NEW DELHI, SEPTEMBER 6: An expert panel constituted by the Petroleum Ministry has suggested that additional excise duty be levied as penalty on automobiles that guzzle petrol and diesel.

“Relatively inefficient cars — those with a composite fuel economy rating below the average — may be subjected to a Gas Guzzler Tax,” says the Sub-Group on Refining whose report is to be considered by the Working Group on Petroleum & Natural Gas while finalising the 11th Five Year Plan (2007-12) >------Snip

Looks like one more law without adequate thinking.... What should be the basis for comparison/arriving at an average. Dont tell me Hummer will be taxed after comparing with the FE of our Maruti 800

LOL, in theory its a great way to push manufacturers into offering more efficient cars. The States already has a similar law.

Buttttttttttttttt whos going to test and arrive at the FE figures, which define a guzzler?

These buggers can't figure out how to give us good roads to drive on, but they sure think of ways to bring in additional taxes on us. This is plain ridiculous.

Looks like the babus want to test drive the hot vehicles, later mummify them in spools and spools of red tape, tax heavily and prevent you from buying anything that runs good.

Even in UK I find guzzlers (Read SUV) being taxed more in the name of reducing number of people who buy the same but there is hardly any reduction in the number of customers. Govt revenues have got a boost in the name of environment.

I see a spurt in demand for e-zen, b-zen etc and guys on this forum will be pushed more and more by customers to mod their cars better lol:

cheers

India has the most efficient Burocratic machinery provided the right inputs(lots and lots of inputs) are given by the public dealing with it. Big companies have enough to give to get what they want.

The goverment should tax itself here. The poorly maintained old government vehicles would be the biggest gas guzzlers.

Good point! similar problem exists here too. That's why FE tests are done on the dyno under controlled conditions. 2 cycles tested here are city and hwy. City cycle has a certain number of stops etc. Euro and Japanese cycle are different. Japanese cycle has more stops and hence the same car will show lower FE on Jap cycle. Most likely India will adopt Euro cycle.
