Volvo S60 Cross Country imported into India

Volvo has been expanding its model range in India. This year has seen the launch of models like the S60 T6 petrol, V40 hatchback and XC90 SUV. It looks like we can expect another launch from the Swedish automaker in the coming months, as the S60 Cross Country has been imported into India at the Chennai port.

Volvo revealed the S60 Cross Country sedan in January this year. The model is essentially an S60 with a ride height that has been increased by 65 mm. The S60 Cross Country targets buyers who want the comfort and handling mannerisms of a sedan, while providing a more commanding driving stance. More importantly, apart from a raised ground clearance, the car also gets all-wheel drive for the occasional spin on semi-urban roads or dirt tracks.

The vehicle imported has the D5, 2.4L, 5-cylinder diesel engine that makes around 188 BHP @ 4,000 rpm and 420 Nm of torque @ 1,500 - 3,000 rpm. Power is sent to all four wheels through a 6-speed automatic gearbox. The S60 Cross Country is also available with a D4, 2.0L, 4-cylinder diesel engine that makes 188 BHP @ 4,250 rpm and 400 Nm of torque @ 1,750 - 2,500 rpm, with the power being transmitted to the front wheels.

On the petrol front, the model is offered with a 2.5L, 5-cylinder turbo-petrol engine that makes 247 BHP @ 5,400 rpm and 360 Nm of torque @ 1,800 - 4,200 rpm with the power being sent to all four wheels through a 6-speed automatic gearbox. It is unlikely that this variant will be launched in India at least initially.

The Volvo S60 Cross Country's India launch may take place in early 2016.

Re: Volvo S60 Cross Country imported into India

Thanks Tushar. Interestingly, the value of INR 10.3 lakhs seems rather strange. What is the significance of this value - is this the basis at which import duty is paid? But if this is a CBU, should'nt the price/ value be much higher? Or does it mean INR 10.3 lakhs is the cost of production for the car - in that case are the product margins very high? Or is this just marginal cost of production per unit? Any experts on this subject kindly explain.

Customs duty for CBUs is 127% and is levied on the merchandise value + freight + transit insurance, now do the math.

Re: Volvo S60 Cross Country imported into India

Interesting, during the course of my car purchase I was seriously considering a V40, and they launched the V40R Design for around 27 lakhs. They were offering discounts on the V40 Cross Country which was essentially the same car, but was way overpriced! They were offering a 4 lakh discount which translated to around 30 lakh ex-showroom. I also had a chance to drive the S80 and S60 and loved these cars.

The problem is that they pushed me away from the V40 was the price to be honest, even though I loved the car. I believe they cannot (and should not) price themselves equally to BMW/Mercedes for their product offerings, if the V40 was around 25 I could have still considered it instead of being pushed to purchase a used 3 series. They have great products, and are even offering 3 year no expenditure plan on their cars. Just need to reduce the price a little bit for people like me to be pushed to their offerings.

Launch of the 2016 S60 Cross Country seems to be closer as several units have now been imported. Vehicles imported are powered by a 5-cylinder 2.4L diesel engine capable of 190HP (AWD variant). A single unit of the FWD variant with the 4-cylinder 2L diesel engine has been brought in as well.

I don't get why Volvo India even bothers launching these cars. The S60 barely ever sold, now pumping it's feet with steroids ain't going to help either.

They should focus on the SUV until the next generation Volvo's are here like the XC90. The XC60 has a lot of potential if priced and marketed right.

I'm in search for a luxury vehicle since few days. I had shortlisted two vehicles that comes in a different class
1. E 250CDI
2. S60 D5 Inscription
Our budjet is around 60L. I'm getting good offers on E 250. But the car is only meant for cruising. It's not that engaging to drive like C class.
I always had a dream to own a Volvo car once in a lifetime during my childhood itself. I really don't know the reason behind it but I love Volvos! Coming to S 60, it's a very nice car in all aspects except for RWD/ outdated interiors/ withdrawal of some exclusive safety measures like BLIS, pedestrian safety, front cam in the present generation model/ ground clearance. Hope there will be some updates for the upcoming s60 cross country.

Re: Volvo S60 Cross Country imported into India

Considering how much the s60 scraped in my test drive, this one might be a better bet for the speed breakers in Bangalore. However this one doesn't look as good as the V40 CC. Something is ungainly in the design.

Update: The dealership in kochi confirmed the launch of S60 CC. It's a 2.4L 5 cylinder 190bhp engine which is 24bhp less than S60 D5. They don't have any info on launch date.

Re: Volvo S60 Cross Country imported into India

The little birdies tell me that one more performance variant of the S60 is incoming later this year.
