General Motors India said on Friday that it would launch its hatchback model `Aveo-UVA' by November/ December with less engine capacity, so that the company could avail itself of the excise duty cut benefit announced in this year's Budget.

"We expect to launch a 1.2-litre petrol engine driven Aveo-UVS by November-December this year," the GM (India) Vice-President (Corporate Affairs), Mr P. Balendran, said on the sidelines of the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India.

"This model would get us the benefit of excise duty cut announced by the Finance Minister,'' he said, adding that the company was looking at launching two variants of the model.

He also said that the company's small car `Chevy Spark' is expected to be launched by April next year and will be rolled out from its facility at Halol in Gujarat.

Mr Balendran said the company's new plant at Talegaon in Maharashtra is expected to start production by October 2008 and will produce the small car with an initial capacity of 1,40,000 units.

I think GM can do without the launch of that car. Current small cars in the market seems to be better than Aveo U-VA in all respects unless priced in Santro, Wagon R range.

I hope they do not make it sluggish in the processing of trying to exempt it from duty. Also, GM should launch a variant with 1.4 L VGIS engine.

yep! fitting a 1.2 litre motor and competing with swift and getz will be a stupid idea. maybe if the price is at par with the santro's/wagon r's highest variant..it could click! best bet should be a frugal diesel engine at 4.5L!

the 1.4 will be sluggish too.look at their 1.6 vgis engine,its not exactly a rocket.

Wont they be killing their own chevy SRV?
I guess the Aveo image will be down marketed with this move, they should just offer the SRV in a 1.2 engine to gain volume.Similar to what Fiat did with the Palio.
