Thank you, guys.

Received my booking receipt earlier today. Official booking docket was readied immediately as well.

The Tata Nexon, now launched at Rs. 5.85 lakhs-2.jpg

Not only am I the first to book the Nexon (unofficially) at my dealership, but they claim that I am the first one to book the car in Tata's entire Central Zone! (something which was confirmed by their Bhopal Zonal office, I was told)

- The dealership technicians have gone for the Nexon's service training and will return by Saturday. I shall try to get more technical details on the newly developed 1.5L diesel then.
- The Nexon demo car will be billed by the company this week, and they are expecting it to arrive by the end of first week of August.
- Official bookings will start from the first week of August.
- First batch of delivery cars should be here by August-end.
- Deliveries to kick off in September.

Interior shot of Nexon showing height adjustable seat belts. We see grab handles on the roof, makes me wonder if they will offer curtain airbags

re: The Tata Nexon, now launched at Rs. 5.85 lakhs

Will be interesting to get more details about the 1.5 L diesel engine.
  • Is it aluminium or cast iron engine with aluminium head? In case it is the latter, the noise levels are going to be good
  • Is the torque curve really as flat as what they have advertised? The torque curve seems pretty flat from the brochure being 260 Nm from 1500 rpm to 3000+ rpm which means excellent driveability. Such a flat torque curve could give the Hyundai diesel engine a run as that is flat torque & excellent driveability as well
  • Is it totally in-house built or have there been inputs from Fiat?
  • How do the torque & bhp curves vs. rpm look?
  • How is the fuel efficiency?

In the early Indica days the running joke about this tag line in the group was this really meant "More weight per car" and "More cost per car", based on what it was doing to the bottom line and the cost of after sale modifications made free of cost.

On a more serious note, the Nexon impresses the more I look at it, as long as one wants to move just 4 people and luggage, as a rugged utility car. The one thing it needs to do well is in the auto box area which needs to be smooth in the city, reliable in general and not overly inefficient in both petrol and diesel versions, and be built to last for at least ten years along with the car. Interiors in particular look very impressive and a nice place for 4 adults to spend time in.

re: The Tata Nexon, now launched at Rs. 5.85 lakhs

Tata's infamous legacy of niggles and bad service should be a thing of past. Their Zest is mostly niggle free. And service too is quite good.

I do believe Nexon would be niggle free, atleast as niggle free as Zest.

Though looks good on paper, I would like to see the Nexon diesel engine in terms of real world performance.

Also important is the service costs. While Tata have already provided a longer service interval of 15000 km ( while most of the competition provides 10000 km service interval), scheduled maintenance like change of timing chain kit is a bit too early (60000 km) for Zest 90 diesel. Tata should look into the matter and atleast provide AMC at affordable cost as they did with Zest. Even more good would be the three year/45,000 km maintenance as they did with Zest at the time of launch. I think this goes a long way in establishing trust in the car, especially so as this is a new engine. Warranty too should be atleast on par with that of Zest.

The timing chain interval was due to the limitation of the chain used in the FIAT 1.3 90hp motor (Changed now, with a new design of chain)

So the new TATA 1.5 diesel motor may not have this limitation.

Scheduled change of timing chain kit in the 75 PS version of the Fiat engine is 1,00,000 km. Reason given for that by the service personnel was that as the 90 PS version runs at a slightly higher rpm, it needs to be changed earlier.

Can the new design chain be fitted on older 90 PS engines?

Now the XM comes with 75 PS engine. Only higher variants come with 90 PS one.

My contention is, apart from pricing and niggle free experience, things like this, clutch life, warranty, AMC etc. do determine the extent of customer satisfaction and go a long way in establishing Nexon as a serious contender in highly competitive market.

The dealerships could do with information provided to prospective customers about the scheduled maintenance and approximate costs.

Hat tip to Tata though.
There is a reason why Tata products don't start with a bang. Typically a Tata or Mahindra product becomes niggle free only 6 mths to 1 yr in its life cycle. A lot many early adopters of cars from these stables have passed on their experience to others making the majority more cautious. It is this bridge of reliability that these brands need to overcome, than simply snob value!

Mod Note: Please stick to the topic and discuss ONLY the Nexon here. We have many other threads to discuss Tata's opportunities & challenges.

Thanks!

re: The Tata Nexon, now launched at Rs. 5.85 lakhs

Guys - I am not sure if this has been discussed already, but I am wondering if the base variant will come at a mouth watering price but with possibly the 1.3 Multijet and higher variants getting the 1.5L Diesel unit ? Or has that possibility been ruled out ?

I don't think so. If that was the case, they would have mentioned the 1.3 quadrajet engine also as one of the engine options when they officially revealed the engine specifications.

Just to catch up again on my earlier question. Mods - is team-bhp showing up today in Kochi media drive?

Nexon media drive from Today till Thursday @ Kochi

I think there is a reason behind launching Nexon few weeks earlier than expected, and the location of media drive.

Guys, is there any twitter Hashtag by Tata for the Nexon Drive campaign?
That would make it easier to track the developments through the day.

#ExploreWithNexon is the hastag for the media drives and blogger events.

re: The Tata Nexon, now launched at Rs. 5.85 lakhs

Guys, looks like Nexon is indeed being launched with an AMT option.

As per Autocar:

"Tata has ditched the Fiat-sourced 1.3 Multijet diesel and has instead developed an all-new four-cylinder 110hp,1.5-litre Revotorq diesel engine, which is essentially a scaled-up version of the 1.05-litre engine used in the Tiago. For the petrol Nexon, Tata makes use of a turbocharged version of the 110hp, 170Nm 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine, currently present in the Tiago. Both versions are expected to get a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, with the option of AMT."
