As per todays TOI, GM is all set to launch the captiva as a CBU with a CRDI engine @ 18-20L.

In case the volumes justify it, they may even look at local assemble/production.

would this CRV a run for its money- cause it is a brilliant looking SUV with that really important ingredient- a CRDI motor?

The Diesel sounds good - 2 litre, 16v, 150 bhp, 310 nm....... clap: clap:

Looks a lot like the new Santa Fe and being a 7 seater, the CRV and Tucson finally seem to have some competition. However, GM being GM, it might end up here by 2008 by when both Honda and Hyundai would have brought in newer models. Remember how they delayed the Aveo launch - we've been seeing 'test' cars since Jan 2005. This may be faster if its a CBU - replacement for the Forester?

Actually the report did mention that since the Forrester failed in India, GM is looking t get in a full fledged SUV- So yeah, it can be called a replacement for the Forrester.

the target launch for the CBU is first quarter '07.

GTO,

This the SUV you looking for? I remember you having mentioned in a thread abt the SUV type/category that you intended to purchase.

Why CBU! :Frustrati
GM needs to get their lazy act together here....the volumes will be high for this SUV coz it has everything working for it! Good engine, good looks...they should just make it locally it would sell well.
P.S:Is it a 7 seater?

at 18-20 lacs, the volume of sales wouldnt be enough to justify going in for local assembly.they might as well produce it locally, this way the price will come down till 15lac,and at that price it would slaughter the honda crv and GM would get its volumes.

the captiva first appeared in the 2004 motorshow as the s3x concept.it has two variants, onee with 5 seats and the other is a seven seater.in europe it has two choices of engines two-litre 150hp common-rail direct-injection diesel and 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with 140hp .The diesel engine was developed in co-operation between GM Powertrain and VM in Italy.the same range of engines can be made available for the lacetti aka optra.so if they can get to manufacture it locally, the diesel engine can be even plonked into the optra.:Cheering:

Captiva sure is a great modern design and should do really well here with its diesel powerplant!

great curves ;-)

Very sad that GM again doing the same stuff with this launch as well as it did with Aveo...Actually, Daewoo showed a concept SUV called the S3X back in 2004 at the Paris auto show. This Captiva is based on that.

Price going to be important factor. If it is somewhere near CRV or Tucson, man, GM is in big trouble. No automobile-enlightened person will buy this for that much, when you have a hi-quality product like CRV with you!

True or not?

Why would anyone pay 18-20L for Captiva ? The market needs a good looking SUV with refined engine and good build quality in 12-14L price range. Gosh, where is Fortuner?

Hm. Strange. This month's ACI states that the Captiva is stated for a 2008 launch.

@Sahil: It's touted as a 5-seater, with optional 7-seater verisons.

And BTW, it's a FWD-based AWD system (transverse mounted engine, and no low range), a direct rival to Tucson and CR-V in terms of engine layouts, size, market appeal, etc. Anything above 16L on-road, and Dorothy stays in Kansas.

Innova's sales have never been on target right from the beginning. Corollas are slipping through the charts. Still leading, though. Camry's hot. Nevertheless, overall profile's low. The Thai management team from Toyota are beginning to run things in India. If there EVER was such a thing as timing, Toyota should launch the Fortuner. A.S.A.P. Perhaps by 3rd quarter of 07'. At least.

GM has finally succeded in getting a good name in the market with its Optra, Tavera and now the Aveo. Now this Captiva is bound to shake the sales of CRV no doubt! with such a lovely diesel engine that wud give even the Tucson a run for its money!

And the best part wud be if it came out as 7 seater, coz there arnt any 7 seater contenders ( Endeavour not counted here ) in this range.

Hondadude, u think that the Fortuner will be priced at the 12-14 lk range??? Am sorry but if Toyota started pricing the Fortuner so low, they will never make it possible at all!

Please be a bit more realistic mate, if u see the Fortuner, then u will know why it can actually be priced even more than the X-Trail in India!

If the current Suvs in india are being sold at the prices they are, then Fortuner is priced at 22-25 lks, and even then its a best buy i wud say!

IF ppl pay 17 for Tucson and CRV, 23 for Terracan, and a astonishing 23-26 for Xtrail, then buying the FortuneR for 30 wud seem just right!

HM Launching the Mitsubishi Montero for 29lks, the Fortuner might be priced anywhere near X-Trail!

The Fortuner is a beauty in all angles, its huge, its sleek, its masculine, its rich, its just marvelous! ppl be prepared to pay a big sum for it as no favours to india in pricing matters!

ID, its good to see your belief in the Fortuner pricing but IMHO, the Fortuner doesn't deserve to be priced anywhere above the 15-17 lacs band.

Reason why it could be in the 12-14 lac category is because it is on the same platform as the INNOVA so less of additional investment for Toyota (other than the engine which is different).

I think the X Trail is a complete rip-off at that price, but if the Fortuner went anywhere near (or beyond), it would take over the dubious distinction of being THE GREAT INDIAN RIP-OFF....just my opinion

Suman made the point above. Fortuner is based on same platform as Innova.

How many people paid 17 for Tucson, Terracan or Xtrail. Their sales numbers are paltry. I would think that Toyota would go for the volumes rather than play in the niche.

Its true that CRV is doing allright. IMO, Fortuner can do to the SUV segment what Civic has done to the C+ segment. If Toyota prices Fortuner right, CRV might have to follow the Corolla way.

I only have to say this - If GM prices the Captiva at 18-20 they can kiss their sorry *** goodbye! The market demand right now is for a good SUV in the range of 14-16L anything above & it'll sell like the Tucson/Terracan/X-Trail. Hell if priced right even crap like the Enadeavour sells in decent numbers, so IMHO the game for GM is to price the product right & not strip it down too much.

Priced too high the Captiva too will go the Forrester way.

ID - The sales number for the models mentioned is paltry and the reason for discontinuing the Terracan was because of the poor sales. The Pajero/Montero has been around for a while and how many have been sold? I would be surprised if their total sales per year are even in three-figures.
