Our NCR Delhi Bs4 diesels have been drinking bs6 fuel since last April and breathing fine. So do not worry.

The Earth Dreams in the Amaze is a stonker of an engine, so if you are specifically looking at the diesel Amaze, anytime between now and December 2019 would be the best time to get it.

My guess is that both the petrols and diesels will be detuned with BS 6 kicking in and they will no longer be as fun to drive. The petrol Amaze is no fun even now, but the diesel is an absolute monster (not as much fun in the City though).

Moreover with the courts having clearly told that they will not allow the sale of BS 4 vehicles post April 2020, my guess is most manufacturers will stop building BS 4 vehicles by the end of December 2019, if not earlier.

I was thinking about this. What are the fleet operators going to do after BS VI kicks in. I'm yet to come across a petrol car run by fleet operators in Chennai.

Maruti Suzuki to launch BSVI cars from June-19.

- Only be petrol cars will be launched now because BS-VI petrol cars can operate safely on BS-IV petrol

Good to see BS-VI cars being launched now. Since unless we know what engines will survive to BS-VI one may be stuck with a discontinued engine with the associated costs of spares and maintenance.

I am quite aware than the vehicles cannot be registered as BS-VI till April 2020.

I hope other will also follow suit.

'A large number of BSIV vehicles may be dumped before BSVI is rolled out'. This is mentioned in last paragraph. What does this exactly mean?

re: BS6 / BSVI emission norms coming in April 2020! EDIT: BS6 Phase II coming in April 2023

The automobile industry in India is gearing up for a transformation. Electric vehicles (EVs) and the upcoming emission norms are expected to give the auto industry a makeover. With this, the health index of people will improve and in turn, boost the economy.

Quote:
On April 1, 2020, the emission norms of vehicles in India will move to a higher level. They will transit from ’Bharat Stage (BS) IV to BS VI emission norms, skipping the BS V stage. Broadly speaking, the BS VI emission norms will help keep a check on the pollution levels. However, it also means that the auto companies along with the auto casting industry will have to realign many of their practices.

While the BS VI emission norms will have a more near-term impact, the effect of EVs will be felt in medium to long-term impact. BS emission norms are based on the European emission norms, which means that BS VI is on par with Euro-VI norms, operational in many parts of Europe.

Hi,

I have read lot of article on BS6 implementation in India. Let me compare with Annex6 implementation in Merchant Navy.

- There is a cut off date to car makers as well as oil companies to produce BS6 compliant engine and fuel. Many car makers have already come with BS6 ready engine. BS6 fuel is available in Delhi and NCR.

- Though BS4 cars can be run safely as mentioned by some BHPian. In reality there is reduction in sulphur% in BS6 fuel results in lesser fuel density which leads leaking of oil seals and mechanical seals. In merchant navy vessels when we changed over to low sulphur fuels [reduction in density from 0.92 to 0.84] oil seals started leaking. We rectified by replacing with new type seals from OEM.

- Is BS6 engine run safely on BS4 fuel ? BS4 cars will not be sold beyond 2020 April, but cars registered before deadline will be given 10 years registration to run as BS4. So BS4 fuel has to be made available to all those cars continuously for 10 years. This will create additional burden for petrol stations to stock 2 grades of fuel. Because transition had been kept for 10 years. It is certain that after 10 years the resale of those BS4 cars will be at a scrap rate. In Merchant Navy they had given cut-off date and fuel bunkers were made available for those vessels to run safely. After the cut off date the option was given to change the engine to comply with Annex6, but scrapping vessel was more profitable. [Annex-6 is Air pollution]

Don't be too sure about that. To save themselves from such probable losses, they are already ramping down manufacturing. Am not sure what kind of inventory would last till the time the deadline arrives. But yeah we can expect stock clearance exercise to start from last quarter of 2019 itself.

BTW will the BS-IV 'petrol' cars run fine on BS-VI fuel?

We have reason to believe that Oil Marketing Companies will be adding lubricity additives to make up for the reduced sulfur content (and the resultant reduced lubricity) - https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/india...v-engines.html

Could it be that in the shipping world, the fuels weren't suitably modified with lubricity additives?

Hi Locusjag,

- Even marine fuels are also added with suitable additives to comply with regulations. Otherwise Any damages to the engines will have a huge claim from engine makers/shipping companies.

- Bunker oil received will be tested on-board before accepting. 4 samples will be retained on-board for 3 years as a mandatory by Marpol Annex-6. One sample is sent for shore analysis. Fuel oil is put into use only if the analysis results are satisfactory.

- Regular surveys will be carried out by Flag and PSC before issuing international certificate.

BS-VI will have no overlap with BS-IV. When BS-iV came in there was a period of about three months when BS-III cars could be sold. This time no overlap is on the cards. So BS-VI means BS-VI.
