re: BS6 / BSVI emission norms coming in April 2020! EDIT: BS6 Phase II coming in April 2023

If a new BS6 ready/compliant petrol is available in market (we have a few examples now already), will it be registered as a BS6 before 1/4/2020 ?

No. As we had discussed on another thread, this exercise (saying that a manufacturer is selling a BS-VI compliant vehicle to you) has no advantage apart from making the customer a guinea pig. Quoting my post from that other thread:

Thanks so much SS-Traveller!

So if I understand correctly
- to have a BS6 vehicle registered as BS6 one in all legit/transparent way, it has to be after 1st April 2020
- if a so called "BS6 Ready/Compliant" vehicle is registered before 1st April 2020, it would still be as BS4. I guess that'd have an impact on resale years down the line.

It would, indeed.

However, till the time that BS-VI fuel is available pan-India, it makes no sense to buy a 'BS-VI compliant' vehicle, register it as a BS-IV, and then use BS-IV fuel in it. Even as Delhi gets BS-VI fuels now, what about when the owner travels out of town?

To give you one more perspective, I have a 2nd Generation Swift bought and registered in 2012 at Raipur RTO (Chhattisgarh) when BS IV was already the norm, however my Physical RC certificate has no mention of the emission norm. In fact the RC has no field where in the Emission standard can be specified and now I have no proof that by Vehicle is BS IV.

Furthermore, the Physical RC even did not have the field to specify the Engine cubic capacity. Under the "HP" field they have mentioned as "1248"

I feel that once BS6 comes into force carmakers should have a petrol variant and then for the 1lakh or so premium that currently exists for diesels they can have a hybrid petrol which will take care of some of the benefits of additional torque and mileage to some extent and then maybe have a diesel which I guess will be a 2 lakh premium in BS6 guise

As I stated earlier it will be only BS-IV. I had to delay my Civic by over a month since the 'official' BSIV came only them. I had a big discussion with Honda and the local sales guys, and it was tough to convince them that BS-IV compliance is not BS-IV. Finally I asked them, can you get me an RS which says BS-IV which they finally said No to. Earlier you had a three month overlap where the old car could be sold. Now the overlap is NIL. So naturally a lot of BS-VI hardware will be sold and registered as BS-IV.

https://www.autocarindia.com/car-new...ost-bs6-413133

Both the Grand i10 and next-gen Xcent will be powered by the same 1.2-litre BS6 diesel motor and the cost increase, according to a company source, “will be around Rs 30,000 – 40,000.” This figure is significantly lower than Maruti Suzuki’s estimate of a Rs 2,00,000 cost escalation going from BS4 to BS6

The 1.2-litre U2 is the only (and possibly the last) three-cylinder diesel engine remaining in India.

First Mahindra and now Hyundai, saying that BS6 cost increases are not going to be a jolt to the pocket.

With the refined diesels, and the space vacated by Maruti DDIS, looks like Hyundai is going to have a free run in that segment

Looks like Maruti has turned out to be like that student whom we all knew too well in school/college. This is the topper type who would howl at the moon about how tough a subject would be and make a drama about how sleepless and loveless they've been. Meanwhile, the resident athlete-student (Mahindra) and the unassuming pretty girl (Hyundai) stepped in, scored an A+ without making a big fuss about it

And what a free run it is going to be! Entry-level buyers who are cost-conscious will anyday choose a fuel-efficient Hyundai 1.2L diesel over a similar petrol-sipping variant offered by competitors.

re: BS6 / BSVI emission norms coming in April 2020! EDIT: BS6 Phase II coming in April 2023

Looks like my next car will again be a Hyundai diesel. I love diesels for their torque and if Hyundai can offer a BS6 diesel at a slight premium of 30000rs over a BS4, definitely I will stick with diesels.

Will statements like these ( below) curtail the demand of diesel cars with uncertainty looming at large.

Will it trigger other states / districts to ape this trend?

re: BS6 / BSVI emission norms coming in April 2020! EDIT: BS6 Phase II coming in April 2023

This will be interesting to see. If Hyundai can, why can't others? More so none of the other players are ready with mass market electric (with reasonable range) or a hybrid per say.

Now with this announcement, Hyundai will two strong offerings beyond 2020

- Mass market diesel as well as mid size diesel (1.5 litre)
- Strong electric (Kona) which takes care of the range anxiety of buyers

Is it possible that HMIL along with Kia motors can tilt the market in their favour with this differentiation?

HMIL - Every hurdle is an opportunity !!

re: BS6 / BSVI emission norms coming in April 2020! EDIT: BS6 Phase II coming in April 2023

One doubt which I have been having is that, the BS6 ready cars, when customers are purchasing them, in 2019 and before April 2020, they will be registered as BSIV in the RC book. Is there any provision to get that updated to BS6 automatically post April 2020? Is there any concrete information in this regard? Many of my friends have been asking this, as in, is there any difference between buying a BS6 ready car now or after April 2020 ?
