That's the law. For now. The Supreme Court had banned the sale of any Bharat Stage III vehicles across India, with effect from the 1st of April 2017. So technically, forget BS4, there are millions of BS3 vehicles still plying on our roads.

@coolkurt; This is normal. In fact till BS4 there an overlap period allowed where both the old and new spec vehicles could be sold. With BS6 there is no overlap period!

BS-VI Compliant models :

Maruti Suzuki India (MSIL) which has highest numbers of BS-VI compliant vehicles, with eight models, on the shelf witness no negative impact due to price hike.

Most of the buyers are preferring to go for BS-VI.

The cost difference for BS-VI compared to BS-IV is about Rs 8000 to Rs 9000 on every unit for mid to high variants, however the base variant BS-VI is about Rs 600 costlier.

The manufacturers have adopted multiple strategies to minimize the impact of the cost hike. While some are ready to give a temporary cushioning to customers by not passing entire cost burden.

That's BS. The sales for Jeep are for all models and not just trailhawk. Trailhawk sales won't even cross 3 digits.

The biggest hit will be for diesel cars and other than Seltos and Trailhawk there is nobody with a BS6 diesel.

It would have eventually come as the SPresso is already BS6 with 1L K series. Maruti has the maximum number of cars with BS6 engines. And looking at current state of affairs, their sales may not suffer much after BS6 norms kick in as by that time, they would also have Brezza and S-Cross also in BS6 petrol avatar.

By this hour we are aware that many popular or rather decent cars (mostly diesels) will be out of the production line in the BS-VI era.

Let us try to compile a list of those and discuss would you buy any of them!

1. VAG group
- Audi no diesel cars as the 2.0L mill is not BS-VI ready
- VW/Skoda 2.0 & 1.5 TDI powered cars will not be BS-VI ready.
- Will you buy a 1.0 petrol Polo?

2. Renault-Nissan
- 1.5 K9 diesel powered cars will be discontinued: Duster/AWD, Captur, Lodgy, Kicks
- Renault happy selling Kwid & Triber, what would Nissan do? Redi-(to)go

3. Toyota
- Liva/Cross, Etios will be discontinued in both petrol & diesel
- Toyota happy selling Innova & Glanza!

4. Tata
- Varicor 400 mill powered Hexa & Safari Storme will be phased out
- Harrier was BS-VI ready should see an update in the Buzzard
- 1.2 Revotron will be BS-VI ready in the Altroz followed by Nexon
- 1.5 diesel Nexon should be BS-VI ready in the facelift
- Tiago/Tigor diesels will be phased out but petrols will be upgraded

5. Maruti Suzuki
- Most of the petrol mills are BS-VI ready
- Swift/Dzire/Baleno diesel will not be available
- Maruti is misleading the buyers with the future of diesel cars in their portfolio. According to me the 1.5L oil burner should be BS-VI ready for cars like Brezza, Ciaz, Ertiga & S-cross!

6. Mahindra-Ford
- Ford petrol & diesel mills will not be upgraded so the 1.5 TDCI will be history.
- Ford dragon petrol mills should have been BS-VI ready as they were recently developed but I'm not sure why they are not!
- Mahindra 1.2 petrol in the XUV300 is BS-VI ready and may power future Ford vehicles. This would be interesting!
- Same for the 1.5 diesel mill from Mahindra for cars like, XUV300, Marazzo & Bolero+
- XUV500 facelift will be BS-VI ready

7. Honda
- No news of their Earth dreams going greener?
- They need a SUV with BSVI diesel heart to survive!

8. Hyundai-Kia
- Their entire line up will be BS-VI ready
- Eon already discontinued
- Santro 1.1L not confirmed for BS-VI
- Grand i10 might face the axe
- Nios & Aura will take it forward
- Not sure about the 1.4 Gamma diesel mill of the i20/Active & Creta

I may be wrong so please update the information. Also, which vehicle would you buy now before it's gone.

I would consider,
- Duster AWD
- Rapid/Vento TDI
- S-Cross 1.3
- EcoSport TDCI
- Etios 1.5L Petrol

Another interesting fact is that big players like Ford, Toyota & Nissan are quitting the scene of diesels whereas homegrown OEMs like Tata & Mahindra are taking the next step forward!

I am sure as far as petrol engines go; BS-VI is the way. But with diesels some may prefer the current BS-IV, due to cost constraints. Clearly, upgrading petrol engines to BS-VI has minimal cost impact to the manufacturer as compared to diesel.

Yes, they can but it's not confirmed. The TDCi engines are updated in Europe. The same article says,

Ford currently offers three diesel engine options across its range – a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder unit powering models such as the Figo hatchback, Figo Aspire compact sedan and the EcoSport, alongside a larger 2.2-litre, four-cylinder and 3.2-litre, five-cylinder unit under the hood of the Endeavour. It, however, remains to be seen if all of these engines will be upgraded to meet the stricter emission norms.

As a part of their JV,

In a joint statement, both carmakers said that the strategic alliance between the two is focused on leveraging Ford’s global reach and expertise, and Mahindra’s scale and successful operating model in India. Further areas of collaboration include electrification, distribution and product development. In October last year, Mahindra agreed to supply new small-capacity BS-VI-compliant petrol engines to Ford as part of their alliance.

Is diesel engines more sensitive to fuel quality or fuel type?
If so will there be issues in warranty if there is any issue to BS4 car due to bs6 fuel?
Can manufacturers deny warranty due to this?

BS6 engines are sluggish. In two wheelers I have tried Activa 6G and in cars - diesel Seltos. Maruti's petrol portfolio is now BS6, and the cars just don't have the same punch. Anyone else feel the same? Or is it the effect of BS4 fuel in BS6 engines?

I have a weird query, not sure where to ask. My Brio is Feb 2013 manufactured and registered in Pune. I looked up and gather Pune was already declared only BS4 for new vehicles by 2013. My RC book doesn’t mention anything, nor parivahan website. How do l conclude it is BS4 and not BS3? It is important because BS4 vehicle gets validity of 1 year (less headache and cost) for PUC certificates.

Found quite the opposite while I test drove Seltos HTX Diesel after Compass BS4. While the Seltos was a bit laggy the Compass worse and only when the engine whistle's did it talk to the wind.

Infact my drive of the Compass trailhawk was also better in manual mode than the Normal Compass BS4 because of lesser lag in <1800.
