Maruti to export Baleno to Japan. EDIT: Now Europe too

The Prime Minister of India has stated that Maruti Suzuki will manufacture cars in India and export them to Japan, Suzuki's homeland. He was addressing the India-Japan Business Leaders Forum. This will be the first time that Japan will import cars from India.

R.C. Bhargava, chairman of Maruti Suzuki has said that at the moment, the recently launched Baleno hatchback will be exported to Japan starting from January 2016. The company expects to ship out 30,000-40,000 units annually. Maruti had earlier revealed that it is planning to export the Baleno to more than 100 countries all over the world.

The Baleno was launched in India in October 2015. It is available with a choice of two engines:

1,197cc, 4-cylinder petrol, 83 BHP @ 6,000 rpm and 115 Nm @ 4,000 rpm

1,248cc, 4-cylinder diesel, 74 BHP @ 4,000 rpm and 190 Nm @ 2,000 rpm

While both the engines are mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, the petrol engine can be bought with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) as well.

In international markets, the Baleno is expected to be available with a 1.0L, 3-cylinder Boosterjet turbocharged petrol engine as well. This powerplant is capable of developing 109 BHP and 170 Nm of torque.

re: Maruti to export Baleno to Japan. EDIT: Now Europe too

Should rest all the doubts about the structural integrity of Baleno which some people have commented over various forums.
Just few decades back we were so excited about Suzuki coming to India. I think they inked the pact around 1982 with Maruti and started production in 1983/84.
Now Maruti have grown as big as Suzuki and we have world wide launches from India and we are selling to Japan. Great feeling indeed for all those who have seen this growth in our auto industry. Some may debate that this could have been faster but still anyways an awesome achievement.

A full Circle, Japan to import India-made Maruti Suzukis now.

32 Years ago, on this day-14th December 1983 with the help of Suzuki, the iconic Maruti 800 was launched in India.

Now Made In India 'Baleno' will be exported to Japan, a well known fact that if all goes well this footprint will be replicated by more models of Suzuki.

I am not so sure of that. Domestic variants may or may not have the same structural integrity as exported ones. Only a crash test will shed light on that.

Maruti Suzuki to export cars (Baleno) to Japan

The key fact to look out for will be the weight of the exported cars. If it is similar to Indian Baleno, owners here can take it as a big positive sign.

Mod Note: Moved some posts to the main 'crash test' thread. Let this discussion focus on the exports to Japan.

re: Maruti to export Baleno to Japan. EDIT: Now Europe too

This make sense. Suzuki passenger cars is more Indian than Japanese now. I am sure their Indian factories are as good as any other in the world. I am talking manufacturing here and not build quality of product / weight. So don' t flame me here. Maybe in another decade they may even decide to move their world HQ to India.

One thing worth noticing. See how Maruti Suzuki has gone from strength to strength after ownership and control of the company went outside of Govt of India. This cannot be a co incidence.

Osamu Suzuki recently revealed that he wanted to move Suzuki's HQ to India. His family opposed the idea.

I think Maruti-Suzuki has just been in the right place at the right time. In the 80s, government support got them on a roll. After the 90s, splitting up from the government (and Suzuki gaining control) helped them become more competitive.

This is one giant that has only become more competitive with time. In fact, some of the newbie manufacturers are complacent when compared to Maruti.

It is just a protective covering to prevent damages during transit

Will it be possible for Maruti to eventually de-control itself from Suzuki and be open for other partners, like say Toyota/Daihatsu.

Why would they do that? It's because of Suzuki they reached this far. More importantly maruti and suzuki are one entity.

Not so fast. It is perhaps the lightest car of its size in the world without using fancy lighter metals like aluminium in its construction. I still have my doubts.

Suzuki Motor Corporation holds over 56% stake in Maruti Suzuki. Maruti is the main source of income for Suzuki and this is not just from the sale of passenger cars. Suzuki earns a lot from Suzuki for technology transfer, licenses and in many other indirect forms.

The only reason to retain the Maruti brand name is because of the brand-image and popularity in India. All the higher management positions are slowly being filled up by old-timers from Suzuki. That is the main reason why there have been quite a few exits of Executive Offers etc from Maruti in the past few years. These were people who have been with Maruti for over 20 - 25 years.

To answer your question in brief, "No, Maruti cannot separate itself from Suzuki". And in reality, they don't need to, as it is basically the same company.
