The car dealer will happily oblige with options on that

Far, very far.
Even Meerut is not far enough. Dehradun, Saharanpur, Agra are some options.

Some days back one Pune member who has a BMW 530 D demonstrated to us that even this 250+ horses 3 lit 6 cylinder car can return 19km/lit when driven softly on the highway.
This is actually more than what the 4 Cylinder 2 Lit option can return. In traffic situation with Eco mode off the 600 RPM idle as against 850 Rpm in the smaller engines is actually going consume as well as pollute much less.

Uttarakhand has also the incentive of much lower road tax. So in a way it is a boon that you cannot register a 2000+ CC Diesel in NCR.

But some one can register a car in other state only if they have residence proof. What if some one don't have any property/relatives staying in that state, then how one can still register a car in such scenario.

Well ask premium car dealers in delhi, all of them can get your car registered in UK and Ch numbers, just for the requirement of a rent agreement that can be arranged by themm sitting in delhi, i have a factory for once in roorkee so i might buy these at throwaway prices in the used market.
Have a rent agreement prepared if you know someone and volla, you are good to register a 2000cc+ car. Aren't we seeing too many UK number cars in NCR already.
Downsides include Insurance claim delays and theft registration and obviously lower resale but then do they matter?

For the folks in NCR Supreme Court may allow registration of cars above 2000 CC with some riders

Supreme Court hinted on Monday that it may consider relaxing its order banning registration of new diesel luxury cars and SUVs with an engine capacity of over 2000 cc in Delhi and National Capital Region.

“Primarily, we are of the view that diesel vehicles cause more pollution than other vehicles. We may be right, we may be wrong. We are open to modifying it,” a bench comprising Chief Justice TS Thakur said.

Well so they finally (and thankfully) realized and admit that they are not the technical experts. They are mere judges.

I dont think the ban on registering > 2000 cc diesel cars is applicable for Gurgaon (HR) registrations. Its only for Delhi (DL) registrations

The ban is applicable all over Delhi NCR. I am sure of that. Endeavour not being registered in Delhi NCR, as also Mercedes, Fortuner, Innova, Pajero etc. Any car with an engine 2000 cc or above. Including Thar.

re: Supreme Court bans registration of diesel cars over 2,000 cc in Delhi & NCR:EDIT lifted with 1% cess

Mercedes is now looking to hold off its planned investment in India due to diesel ban in Delhi

Quote:
The ban of diesel vehicles in the national capital region above engine capacity of two litres has forced German luxury car maker Mercedes-Benz to relook at its India strategy. India might lose some of its investments that Mercedes has year-marked for its expansion in the country.

“For a company acting globally, there is always a choice to shift to other countries like Russia or Brazil,” said Roland S. Folger, managing director and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India.

Though some of his colleagues at Mercedes have raised this as a concern, Folger still hopes that by mid-2016 the government will lift the ban. Till then a large chunk of the company’s investments are on hold. “We are forced to stop some of our investments in India, which were based on opportunity that a market has… All these have caused delay in decision making, which isn’t good,” he said.

NCR is close to 20-25% of Mercedes’ domestic volumes, and diesel makes for 80-85% of that. If the ban continues, Folger’s biggest concern is that it won’t be able to achieve the volumes it was targeting.

Unlike in most developed markets, including China, luxury cars make for 5-8% of total car sales. In India it is just over 1%.

The diesel ban has only made things worse, also affecting dealers. “Dealers’ business has come down by 30-50%. With a high load of petrol vehicles there is at least something to sell,” Folger said, who said that the ban is a “lost opportunity”.

Mercedes has witnessed more inquiry of petrol vehicles, but Folger said that hasn’t translated to sales. He added that contrary to what the government and the Supreme Court thinks, the new diesel engines emit 25% less CO2 than petrol cars, and once the BS-VI regime starts the diesel engine will be as efficient as the petrol ones.

The equivalent of NGT in Gods Own Country has its way. Kerala is another state where cars like the Toyota Innova, Fortuner, etc are popular. I am not quite sure where we are headed with rules like these.

I've started to see some >2000cc diesel SUVs on temporary registration in Delhi. Is the RTO giving temp registration to these and how long can they be run that way?

With the govt. bent on taking Knee jerk reactions (After NCR Diesel vehicles over 10 years now banned in Kerala along with new registration of cars having diesel engines > 2000 cc), I wonder if I should sell off my three year old Punto and buy a petrol car before we reach a stage when there will be no takers for diesel cars in second hand market.

Who knows, this may soon become a pan India rule!
