Diesel SUV ban - Mahindra to refund booking amounts in Delhi

Mahindra has decided to refund booking amounts to customers who have booked its SUVs that are affected by the ban on diesel vehicles over 2,000cc in Delhi.

Earlier this month, the Supreme Court put a ban on the registration of cars and SUVs with diesel engines over 2,000cc in Delhi till March 31, 2016. The step was taken after a report by the World Health Organisation revealed that New Delhi is the most polluted city in the world.

Mahindra is one of the car manufacturers who are likely to be severly affected by this ban. While the company has some models that have smaller diesel engines and some that run on electricity, the major chunk of its sales comes from its 2-litre + diesel models. Vehicles like the Bolero, Scorpio and XUV500 are big contributors in its overall sales. All these vehicles are powered by diesel engines larger than 2,000cc.

With its big sellers out of the equation, Mahindra will have to rely on the TUV300 to see it through till a solution is worked out. The company is also preparing to offer schemes on products such as the Verito, Verito Vibe and the E2O electric vehicle to push sales. Additionally, it will launch the KUV100 compact SUV on January 15, 2016. The car is powered by 1.2-litre petrol and diesel engines, which will allow it to be eligible for registration in the national capital.

Very well played Mahindra. Very matured approach. Even on the day the bans were announced, Mr. Anand Mahindra responded with composure and balance on twitter.

SUV's being their bread and butter, this approach is quite commendable.

Re: Diesel SUV ban - Mahindra to refund booking amounts in Delhi

Yes a fair response by Mahindra and a mature one by Anand Mahindra.

Am not in favour of this Ban on Diesel vehicles though. It is ill thought and frankly Dumb. there is a lot more that can be done and sadly the courts have to rely on statistics presented to them and those presenting the case for Diesel vehicles have done a poor job. There are many other sources of pollution that come higher in the order and there are many other solution that can be deployed to manage the issue in a better manner.

First off they could ban all BS3 and earlier Diesel vehicles in NCR (or ask for payment of a stiff fee if an antique or if one has emotional attachment) if they so wish..

Great confidence there! I am sure Mahindra will play their cards and introduce a 1999 cc engine and to surprise the masses, the new engines might produce comparable or more power than the 2.2 mill

By the way what is the agenda? Will the government continue ban even after 31st March 2016? If yes, then I am afraid even other metro's might follow the suit soon!

Btw, If the government is so much concerned about pollution in Delhi, please provide adequate power supply so that diesel generators are used sparsely! The pollution emanating from diesel gen-sets is way much more than SUV or cars with 2000cc+ engines and if worked on, the pollution will fall well within safe limits!

Petrol XUV was already in the testing phase i think? Now what manufacturers are supposed to make custom car's according to cities? A little too much pressure on the car manufacturers,

Customers want fuel economy, Power, Looks, Government takes heavy taxes, Wants to keep the pollution under check (Which is a good thing) But too much burden for the automobile industry which is already not going great in the first place.

Yes, looks like the 2.2L petrol is already used in the exported Scorpios.

Will be interesting to see the specs and FE etc.

This a tough one for Mahindra. All there volume and cash generators are affected by this ban. I dont think anyone has data that could justify this ban. What will be interesting in my view is that after period of 3 months how will court/govt show improvements or redux in pollution levels.

Re: Diesel SUV ban - Mahindra to refund booking amounts in Delhi

Just saw this article about the xuv500 hybrid. Powered by a 1.5 diesel engine. But does not talk much about the hybrid part apart from the fact that it is being tested with the E2o team. So are they putting the electric motor and stuff from the e20 to make the hybrid part? Expected to cost 1L more than the regular variant.

If it is a proper hybrid- great news.

Quote:

The XUV500’s hybrid engine will be producing similar power of 140bhp and it will about one lakh more than the currently sold XUV500. It will available in two trim levels to begin with and more variants could be added depending on the demand. The XUV500 hybrid has been made and tested with Mahindra Reva team. This is another strong product that Mahindra will be looking at exporting to developed countries. Mahindra already has plans to export new electric vehicles to Europe and this hybrid will also be a part of its export product portfolio.

Edit: Was able to find this from an article in IAB on the 2014 Auto Expo

Quote:
The car features permanent magnet synchronous motor & lithium ion battery to supplement the diesel power. It combines a conventional internal combustion engine propulsion motor with an electric motor propulsion system. The electric motor assists the engine at low engine speeds and while accelerating. It also uses regenerative braking to generate electricity from the act of braking.

Re: Diesel SUV ban - Mahindra to refund booking amounts in Delhi

I believe just looking at the vehicle emission to solve the pollution problem would not be fair. Though I welcome the move by Delhi government, I feel construction site which also plays a major part in pollution of dust should also be considered and strict measures for containment of same should be implemented.

Commercial vehicles which are also a major contributor towards the harmful exhaust emissions should see some solution which would prevent their entry into the city without hampering the trade.

Re: Diesel SUV ban - Mahindra to refund booking amounts in Delhi

Mahindra is currently working on downsizing it's oilburner that has been powering it's best selling SUVs: XUV 500 and Scorpio in view of the ban. Apparently, the Indian automaker is contemplating to downsize the 2.2 L diesel mill to a displacement of just below 2000 CC.

Re: Diesel SUV ban - Mahindra to refund booking amounts in Delhi

And Mahindra has downsized the engine to meet the ban requirements.

Quote:
The company has made a smaller version of the mHawk engine that powers the Scorpio and XUV 500, several industry sources with knowledge of the matter told ET. The new engine is of 1.9 litres, smaller than the 2.2-litre plant that traditionally powers the SUV, bringing it within the limits set by the court for registration of diesel vehicles.

A prototype of the new Scorpio with the trimmed-down engine has been approved by the Automotive Research Association of India and it will reach dealerships for sale soon, the sources said. While the Scorpio is the first vehicle to get the smaller power plant, the more premium XUV 500 too will get it starting February, they said.

Re: Diesel SUV ban - Mahindra to refund booking amounts in Delhi

This is quick, clearly showing agility of the company to insure that sales are not disturbed because of government policies and regulations.

If the company is able to contain the performance parameters in line with the existing 2.2 litre engine, it will be good and would not impact the buying decision of customers as the product is otherwise complete / competent.

Good luck M & M

Re: Diesel SUV ban - Mahindra to refund booking amounts in Delhi

Whats the point of ruling when manufacturer & customers both are ready to pick holes & keep the status of environment etc as before ?
M&M will again make scapegoats of new buyers who will become test mules for changes & its reliability in real world scenario .
