Well, well, for an eighteen year old 'Student' that wasn't half bad! At eighteen I too had the same strong opinions about cars, happy in the belief that

keeping up with the automotive press & media (particularly the jargon of the auto hacks in Autocar (UK), CAR (UK), Motor Trend & other similar tabloids -

our domestic press hadn't caught up yet!) armed me with opinions about technicalities about which I knew zilch! Now after 40 years as a hands-on engineer, I

still humbly submit that I know perhaps just a bit more than I did then - but I understand a good deal about the spin-doctoring and hot air that passes for

knowledge in this arena!:)

Oncars reports that Mahindra has shelved it's plans of launching the Ssangyong Tivoli in India.

This was revealed at the ongoing ACMA (Automotive Components Manufacturer Association) annual session 2016 by Mr Pawan Goenka, Executive Director, Mahindra and Mahindra.

Quote:

Instead of this, the manufacturer will now be launching a new SUV, using the same platform as that of the Tivoli. This all new SUV, probably a compact one in nature is codenamed as "S201" and is likely to make its debut in India soon. No official confirmation about this new vehicle has been released about the company so far apart from sharing the information about the underpinning of the same.

Under the hood, the "S201"’s petrol derivative will be powered by a 1.5-litre engine while the diesel derivative will also get a 1.6-litre motor. Transmission options are likely to include a 6-speed manual gearbox along with an automatic one.

The "S201", when launched in India will propagate itself as an urban SUV and will compete against the likes of Hyundai Creta and Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza.

How many compact SUV's M & M will be launching in India - when you visit any dealership following compact SUV's are placed before you

- TUV 100 (this is claimed as SUV by dealers, though it is not by any standard / benchmark)
- TUV 300
- Nuvosport

and they plan to add one more in the lineup, will it not make it too cluttered for the company as it will be difficult to manage several products cannibalizing each other within B2 and C1 segment space.

Why don't they consider launching a sub brand to create differentiation; M & M is now a fairly recognized brand and they can certainly get an internal buy in for a new brand !

Wow! When did they launch this product?? :D

Though they have quite a few products in their lineup, they still don't have a monocoque accomplished as XUV 500 in the compact space. I think Tivoli would have filled that space well.

A good refined, feature rich VFM 5 seater is something which M&M should launch, taking the fight straight at the Brezza. They should look at a new 1.5L engine (NOT the jugaad on the Quanto / TUV 300), but something which is in the leagues of the 2.2L M-Hawk engine.

Ssangyong Tivoli seem to be on test again, spied by a TAI member,

Import data doesn't show any import of Suzuki Swift!

Side profile looks similar to 2017 Swift, but Swift seemed more extended in length.

It has to be a SsangYong Tivoli, see the rear and logo placement!

SsangYong's Tivoli spied again,

It is still not sure whether or not the Tivoli will be sold in India, however, seems like Mahindra is working on a new compact SUV that would be based on the Tivoli's platform. Would rival the Duster and Creta!

The new compact Mahindra SUV is expected to hit the Indian market by 2018.

Why is Mahindra testing the Tivoli so extensively even after declaring that plans to launch this SsangYong in India were supposedly abandoned?

The only probable explanation is that they are going to launch a badge-engineered version of the Tivoli. I would not be surprised at all if the Tivoli is launched under a different name with a Mahindra grill & badge, and positioned just above the Scorpio but below the top variants of the XUV5OO. It would be a direct competitor to the Creta, S-Cross, Duster & Terrano.

It's also possible that they are testing the Ssangyong's Gasoline Powertrain for Mahindra to incorporate in its line-up in near future.
