Even I wanted to upgrade but alas the limited boot!! No way ,even if it looks exciting. The limited boot space will bite the owners who just went ahead with the tech in the offing. One must choose practicality before anything else.

Test drove the Petrol W(o) variant (relatively short drive). Here are the 10 quick points :

1. The car looks good in flesh. Not exactly 'pseudo SUV' kind of look but more like a large hatchback. Side profile and rear actually remind me of the i20 Active! Still it has got a good personality. Rear end of the car looks the most attractive. Lack of quirky bits is a good thing from Mahindra (the abrupt chopping off of the tail isn't that bad to be honest).

2. Build quality is impressive. Shut lines are decent. Doors are heavy. Typical Mahindra 'weight' is there.

3. Interior design and finish is at par for the segment and superior to most Mahindras for sure (excluding of course the Alturas ). 'All black interior' would have added more character to the design which looks more sober than stylish. Hopefully Mahindra comes up with some sporty variant with all black interiors. Fit and finish is at par with say 'the Swift'.

4. Boot space is disappointing. Even the sales person was honest about the fact.

5. Head room is limited. Especially at the back. Rear seat is set low and no way goes it feel like an SUV. Width is better than Ecosport / Brezza though.

6. Now the most interesting bit 'the petrol variant'
a. Refinement is impressive. Idle and on the move, it is quite silent.
b. No irritating jerkiness of '3 cylinder' engine. In fact it doesn't feel like a '3 cylinder engine' Job well done.
c. Enthusiastic from low revs. So the power comes readily and the car can crawl through the gears like it is in diesel cars. In fact diesel car owners (like me) would feel at home.
d. While it starts off well, power tapers quite early at around 5k rpm which is a bit disappointing. Heck, even the DDIS revs better than this.
e. That said, the engine is easily among the better 1.2 units around. It is no iVtec 1.5 or 1.2TSI, but a competent alternative to the diesel engine on offer (which should be good as well).

7. Steering modes are interesting but the feel is more artificial. Its not exactly lifeless but doesn't connect to the road like say the Nexon or the Freestyle.
8. Body roll is better controlled than the Dzire!
9. Ride quality is fine. At par for the segment.
10. All 4 discs don't really set the tarmac on fire. It does the job but there isn't any 'OMG' factor about it.

Overall I think this car will be a good competitor in the segment. Hopefully Mahindra doesn't go overboard with pricing and does it sensibly.

Launched at 7.9 lakhs onwards -

Some highlights from the presentation not mentioned earlier -
  • 68% high strength steel in the body in white.
  • Fad these days is to launch an entry level stripped down variant to show less price. Mahindra is skipping it to ensure entry variant is mid level of competition.

Petrol W8 at 10.25 L is a bit high. They shoud have kept it below 10L. With all the impressive feature list and safety bits, the car is no doubt low on practicality quotient. I'm not disappointed, but still not feel compelled to buy it over some of the other competitors.

re: The Mahindra XUV300, aka Ssangyong Tivoli. Edit: Launched @ 7.9 lakhs

XUV300 Pricing

Petrol
W4 - Rs. 790000
W6 - Rs. 875000
W8 - Rs. 1025000
W8 (O) - Rs. 119000 extra over W8

Diesel
W4 - Rs. 849000
W6 - Rs. 930000
W8 - Rs. 1080000
W8 (O) - Rs. Rs. 119000 extra over W8

The additional 119000 over W8 variant is worth it - Sunroof, 5 additional airbags, TPMS, Leather upholstery, Diamond cut alloys, front parking sensors.

One ex showroom price across India.

W4 variant is well equipped matching the trend/trend+, XM and VDi variants of competition.

I fell they could have priced the petrol W8 variant below 10 lacs - That 25K would translate to ~50K increase in OTR.

Price difference between petrol & diesel - 59K for W4, 55K for W6 & W8.

The AMT to be offered might be @ 50K more. It'd be great if they offer it on all variants.

IMO fairly priced for the features on offer, not a killer price by any means tough. Ecosport will feel the heat as Nexon is well below the pricing.

Ecosport S Diesel is priced @ 11.89 & the XUV 300 W8 (O) is 11.99, for the additional 10K one gets more power/torque, knee airbag & front parking sensors, Dual zone ACC.

re: The Mahindra XUV300, aka Ssangyong Tivoli. Edit: Launched @ 7.9 lakhs

12L for the fully loaded W(O) variant for diesel and 11.4L for the W(O) petrol variant. The difference between the 2 engines is not very large to encourage buyers to opt for the petrol.

12L for the W(O) would translate to around 13.5L OTR in Delhi. I feel it is around 50k more than I would have liked it to be. at 13.5L it is seriously close to the Creta.

Edit: Been watching the Live telecast. The Q&A that follows was interesting. They mentioned only the Brezza and Ecopsort as competition and even after repeated hints from a fellow colleague on the stage, the Nexon didn't come up. Just a brain freeze moment or a hint of arrogance there? Since out of all the offerings, the one that it is going to fight out with closely is the Nexon.

I think it will be other way round, people will opt for diesel looking at only Rs 60K difference as against average 1L to 1.2L difference prevailing in the market.
Nonetheless good pricing IMO in view of the specifications and equipment on offer.

XUV 3OO W8 is comparable to Nexon XZ+ and Brezza ZDi+ in terms of features. The XUV packs a few more features though.

Even then i think the XUV pricing is on the higher side. The on-road price diff will be over a lakh (XUV being costlier), which IMO is too much even after considering the feature differences.

I said the same. That the difference is not too large to make people opt for the Petrol vehicle. Combined with more torque, higher FE, M&M track record and experience with diesel engines, it becomes a no brainer to opt for the Diesel motor.

Haven't checked the Brezza properly, but Nexon XZ+ isn't close to the XUV 3OO W8 in terms of features -
  • Electronic Stability Program (ESP)
  • 4 wheel disc brakes
  • Hill Start Assist (HSA)
  • 3 point middle row belt + headrests
  • Heated ORVMs
  • Auto Headlamps
  • Auto Wipers
  • Dual zone climate control
  • Leather wrapped steering
  • Cruise Control
  • Seat Belt Reminder for all 5 seats
  • Seat Belt Pre-tensioners for all 5 seats.

Re: The Mahindra XUV300, aka Ssangyong Tivoli. Edit: Launched @ 7.9 lakhs

They have priced the car a bit too optimistically IMO. It is priced even more than the Ecosport which was until now, the most expensive car in the segment. While I do understand that the XUV300 has its own share of merits, especially the engine, the features and the well appointed interiors, but with this price, it has placed itself in a position which is neither here nor there. Neither is Mahindra in a position to command such a high value for its car(just like the Alturas) nor is the brand strong(like the Ecosport) to still manage decent sales inspite of a higher price. In fact Mahindra needed to hit the sweet spot between the Brezza and the Ecosport in terms of pricing to be successful.

Now it may very well be the case that this Mahindra is very deserving of the asked price, but it does not take away from the fact that people would be hesitant to pay this amount of Moolah for the Mahindra, not so much for the Ford. There is a lot of talk about the W8 being equivalent to the top models of the competitors, even the Ecosport Titanium has many features which make it worthy of being a top variant, but even then it has fallen behind the Nexon(and the Brezza). Sadly, I expect the same to happen with the Mahindra as well. Though I would love to be proven wrong.

Thats exactly what i noticed too and was wondering what happened there? Looks like arrogance to me rather than brain freeze moment

Re: The Mahindra XUV300, aka Ssangyong Tivoli. Edit: Launched @ 7.9 lakhs

I feel it is over priced. Would have been competitive if it had started at something like 6.99 for base Petrol.

The Ecosport Petrol starts at 7.82 and ends at 11.36 fully loaded with AT, and Diesel Ecosport starts at 8.42 and goes upto 11.04 for the top end.

The Nexon Petrol starts at 6.36 and ends at 9.62 top end AMT. Diesel starts at 7.40 and ends at 10.60 top end AMT.

Brezza will not be affected anyways but still it starts at 7.67 base Diesel and ends at 10.42 top end AMT

While it is good to offer plenty of features but feature - value proposition should fit into customers' mind to compel them to buy one.

It is to be seen now how people perceive the value proposition here.
