Renault-Nissan's Chennai plant rolls out 10 lakh vehicles

The Renault-Nissan Alliance plant in Oragadum, near Chennai, has achieved the milestone of rolling out ten lakh vehicles. Car no. ten lakh - a Nissan Micra, was rolled out at 1215 hours on January 8, 2016.

The plant was built with an initial investment of Rs. 45 billion and began operations in 2010. The company has invested a further Rs. 16 billion since then to increase its capabilities. The plant's annual production capacity has been increased to 2,00,000 in 2015, from 75,000 units (in 2010).

The alliance also has a research and development (R&D) facility in Chennai. The plant and the R&D facility combined account for 12,000 direct jobs in Tamil Nadu and 40,000 more jobs in the Indian supplier chain.

The plant has rolled out 32 Renault, Nissan and Datsun models and derivatives and caters to the Indian as well as international markets. It is India's second largest car exporter with more than 6,00,000 units shipped to 106 countries.

Almost same as their Alliance Worldwide Ranking as 4th.

It's a fact. Together, they've outsold Honda for the 4th position.

Of course, a different matter that the sales are largely driven by two products, the Kwid & Duster. The Renault-Nissan alliance also has the largest number of flops currently on sale in India.

Some Interesting facts I would like to share :

1. In 2008 the plant foundation stone was laid, with Nissan operations mainly in flow.
2. Renault -Nissan Alliance started operations as 2 different companies initially.
Nissan India Private Limited, Renault India Private limited (pre- 2008)
3. Now they are 5 entities in total with the above two handling marketing, sales and product portfolio management in Chennai.
4. R&D is done at a organization named RNTBCI - Renault Nissan Technical and Business Center India Limited and Production is handled at RNAIPL - Renault Nissan Automotive India Private Limited
6. Along with all these organizations working in tandem for the Alliance functionality, Renault Design Studio in Mumbai operates separately.
