Renault to start 3rd shift for Kwid's production

Read Team-BHP's official review of the Renault Kwid here.

Thank you to the Team-BHP fan (who prefers to remain anonymous) for sending in this information. Heartfelt gratitude for sharing it with other enthusiasts!

The Renault Kwid got off to a strong start, greatly increasing footfall into the French automaker's dealerships since its launch in September 2015. The company has had to work hard to keep up with the demand for the car, with waiting periods soaring to around ten months in some cities. Now, it looks like Renault is gearing up to start a third shift for the Kwid's production.

As per the source, Renault has communicated to all its suppliers to be ready for a ramp up in the production of the Kwid, as the third shift is expected to begin from March this year. While the production boost will be aimed at reducing waiting periods, it is evidently to accommodate the 1.0L Kwid and the Kwid AMT as well, which are expected to debut at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo.

Renault has a lot riding on the success of the Kwid as it is currently the brand's best-selling model and the one it is counting on for a bump-up in market share as well.

Re: Renault to start 3rd shift for Kwid's production

This is good news indeed. Waiting period has always been a decision maker for some buyers, it was imperative for Renault to ramp up the production and at the same time bring in the 1L engine for this excellent hatch. It may be unfair to compare this with the 1.2L segment in the market today, but a 1L engine with the dual airbags and ABS, this definitely has the potential to capture the intended market share that Renault expects. On the other hand , it would be interesting to see how the 1L is priced, IMHO this can make or break the deal for the existing 800cc variants, if it is priced too close to the existing top end variant, the demand for the 800cc may fade off. I knew a lot of folks who bought a kwid opted for the top end variant, just for the value for money proportion.

Agree. Infact, I think in this segment especially, most buyers would not have high patience for waiting periods. I mean, it is not an example of exquisite craftsmanship, with high quality engineering and design. It is a mass produced vehicle, and no one waits 10 months in this segment. That is Ferrari, Bentley territory.

Welcome news indeed! A lot of budget car buyers & 1st time owners have lined up for the Kwid. It will bring the waiting period down.

It's a non-issue. Those who want the additional punch will be happy with the availability of a 1.0. However, a majority of customers out there prefer equipment over power, and will stay with the 0.8L top-end. Best to leave the final choice to the customer, not the management.

Renault would do well in studying the Alto K10's history and how Maruti managed the two engines.

Re: Renault to start 3rd shift for Kwid's production

According to Overdrive, the 1.0L Kwid will be known as Kwid 1.0 Easy-R. The engine is expected to produce over 75PS pf power, which will be close to Alto K10 and Eon 1.0 and will be a direct rival to them. Easy-R stands for the automated manual transmission (AMT).

Re: Renault to start 3rd shift for Kwid's production

It has been officially confirmed that the Renault-Nissan alliance plant in Chennai is in fact, beginning a third production shift to cater to both - domestic and export demand. From this week, the plant will operate a new night shift on one of its two production lines. The decision will allow the plant to meet the rising domestic demand for the newly launched Renault Kwid and prepare for the introduction of Datsun's third model (Datsun Redi-Go) that is expected to be launched in a few months.

Re: Renault to start 3rd shift for Kwid's production

Renault has now stated that they are about to end the 3rd shift in their plant. This will happen from the second week of December. While the temporary workers will obviously have to go the company has said that they will put the permanent employees in other engagements within the plant.
