Volkswagen Ameo @ Auto Expo 2016. EDIT: Starts at Rs. 5.14 lakhs!

Volkswagen India has announced that it will be offering special care packages for the Ameo. These packages will allow the owners to avail after-sales service benefits like extended warranty, a service value pack, and roadside assistance. There will be two packages on offer: Volkswagen Care and Volkswagen Care Plus.

The Volkswagen Care package will include an extended warranty of 2+ 1 year/ 80,000 kms. It must be noted here that the Ameo comes with a standard 2 year warranty. Additionally, the VW Care package will include a Service Value pack applicable for 3 services for a period of 3 years/45,000 km. This service value pack will include protection from price inflation of parts and labour charges, and pick up and drop facility. 24X7 roadside assistance (RSA) for 2+1 year will also be provided in the said package. Moreover, a free inspection will be offered between the second and third scheduled services.

Customers can also opt for the Volkswagen Care Plus package that offers an extended warranty of 2 +2 years/1,00,000 km. The Service value pack in this package gets a broader coverage of 4 services in a period of 4 years/60,000 km. RSA offered is valid for 2+2 years. There will be two free inspections in this package, one between second and third service, and the other between third and fourth service. A free exterior cleaning and a free dry wash is also offered, once in a period of four years.

Volkswagen launched the Ameo sedan last month at Rs. 5.24 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The German automaker seems to acknowledge the fact that the biggest hindrance that customers face while buying a VW car is the company's sub-par after sales experience. As a result, the aforementioned special care packages have been announced in order to impart a feeling of trust in the minds of prospective customers.

Though VW has played better compared to Skoda in India, there is still a lot to learn from players like MSIL, Hyundai and may be Ford (I am using my wisdom to include Ford).

The after sales support and dealer behavior needs to improve and unless that happens people will not move towards VW wholeheartedly.

Also, VW has to follow the segment norms while playing in Indian market - right from the fact that there are no free services when a car is sold creates a mental block among the buyers.

If they are looking at Ameo success strategy, they should provide

- Class / segment leading warranties (3+2) years
- Service guarantee / package schemes similar to Ford (service guarantee) and Toyota (smile package, 60 minute quick service)
- Availability of spare part inventory with dealers and availability of technical staff from VW at their major sale hubs to insure quick resolution of issues that require high level of technical competency.
- In general, shed attitude and ego if the company wants to progress and deep dive in the Indian market. Its a pull market and not push. VW cannot shove / dump crappy products in India in the name of VW brand.

On face of it, this is a welcome move, a lot needs to be done !
