The all-new BMW X1:

• This is the 2nd generation BMW X1
• Launched in India just yesterday, and being locally produced at BMW's Chennai plant
• Dealerships have begun taking bookings. Deliveries begin April 2016 onwards
• Currently only available with one diesel engine option. Petrol to launch later this year
• Uses BMW's new TwinPower Turbo 1995cc 4-cylinder diesel engine
• The engine gets twin turbos with variable turbine geometry and common rail direct injection
• Power output is 188 BHP, with torque output being 400 Nm @ 1,750 - 2,500 rpm
• Transmission on offer is the 8-speed steptronic automatic (torque converter)
• Available in front-wheel drive (sDrive) or all-wheel-drive (xDrive) variants
• The sDrive 20d (FWD) does 0 to 100 km/h in 7.8 seconds
• The xDrive 20d (AWD) does 0 to 100 km/h in 7.6 seconds

• Everything is a step up; space, interiors & build quality too
• Interiors slightly more spacious than the outgoing X1 (do we have the front-wheel-drive layout to thank?)
• Quality is a big step up - hard plastics are gone
• Seats are electrically adjustable on both the driver and front seat passenger sides
• Automatic start/stop function, ECO PRO mode and brake energy regeneration are present
• Launch control & gear-shift paddles on all variants except the Expedition
• M Sport and xLine both feature a big panoramic sunroof and ambient lighting scheme
• Rear seat is better and more comfortable, however, the side support (towards the doors) is gone
• Boot space is now 505 litres. The rear seat can fold to increase boot space to 1550 litres
• Dedicated space for space saver under the boot flooring is a welcome addition

Features specific to the M Sport:

• Bigger 8.8" (22.3 cm) iDrive display
• Head-Up Display and BMW Navigation Plus
• M sports seats and M leather steering wheel
• Upholstery combinations in Dakota leather include Canberra Beige, Mocha with Black/Mocha, Oyster with Grey highlight and Black, Black with Black, Black with Blue Highlight.

• Note the 18" wheels and LED headlights on the xLine variant too
• Colours available are: Black Sapphire, Glacier Silver, Mineral White, Mineral Grey, Sparkling Brown, Sparkling Storm Brilliant Effect, Platinum Silver, Atlantic Grey, Mediterranean Blue, Chestnut Bronze and Alpine White (non-metallic).
• Upholstery combinations are Sensatec Black and Black, Sensatec Canberra Beige and Black.

• The xLine gets a smaller 6.5" (16.5 cm) display for the iDrive

How does the all new X1 compare to the X3, which itself is due for a face lift?

Is the rear bench space much less in comparison to X3.

Tech wise it seems to have everything that X3 has and some more too!

Looks a lot more grown up than the previous one and much better equipped too. Also looks more SUV now. The blue M sport looks lovely too.

Nice to see BMW waking up to the fact that people need the assurance of a spare wheel in the boot and not give up boot space after buying one.

This probably has a different transmission since it is front wheel drive. Maybe that is the reason for the differing gear lever.

This has a Aisin 8 speed and not the ZF, the engine is placed trasnversely to increase cabin space, apparently the cabin is 8 inches longer because of these changes.

The top 2 models, Xdrive 20d xLine and Xdrive20d M sport, have AWD system.
Only the sDrive expedition and sDrive20dxline don't have it.

At 40L Ex-show room (Delhi) price, the M sport is ridiculously expensive, bordering on X3 and 5 series (with discounts), territory!

Finally a proper challenger for the Q3

This new X1 looks sharp - love the blue shade and the alloys (on both the variants)! Interior looks a big step up too.

Pricing looks in line with the segment. My gut instinct says this will be a hit.

Love the estoril blue Msport X1. Combined with black/blue highlight interiors it is going to look really awesome. Great that BMW is giving the xdrive and a host of other features. Considering this has the M sport suspension I think ground clearance will be a little lower than the standard X1.
