Ford India to stop exporting EcoSport to Europe

Ford will shift the production of the EcoSport compact SUV from its Chennai plant to Craiova, Romania by end of 2017, to cater to European markets. The Indian operations will focus on the domestic market as well as the rest of the world including North America.

The EcoSport witnessed a 30% growth in Europe and this decision to move the production to Romania will require a further investment of 200 million Euros (Rs. 1,486.7 crore).

According to a report by Economic Times, this move will result in freeing up plant capacity to export cars to rest of the world, especially North America, where the company plans to ship 80,000 - 90,000 units annually.

With the Ecosport featuring in lists such as these:

I am not at all surprised. A good concept, nice design, but I guess something that we think is perfectly OK is not all OK in Europe.

Not at all surprising that it's featured in the bottom 10 list. In fact it's in the 'bottom' lists on many automobile websites - not just Autocar UK.

It's just plain ugly IMO and is not very good to drive either (got to drive one as a rental about a month ago, did not like it at all - also for such a tiny engine - it wasn't very economical). Unfortunately, a car intended for emerging markets simply can’t compete with the current crossover crop in Europe - such as the Fiat 500X, Renault Captur, Peugeot 2008, GM/Chevy Trax etc.
Apart from the looks (which is subjective), driving dynamics, poor fuel economy, poor performance - the other big problem for the EcoSport is that the cabin looks and feels too much like a design from the last decade – which essentially it is. You can get away with that in developing markets, where value is prized above design, but in the cut-throat European car markets, it’s just not good enough.
