Mercedes-Benz to launch GLS-Class in India on May 18, 2016

Mercedes-Benz has announced that it will launch the GLS-Class in India on May 18, 2016.

The GLS-Class replaces the GL-Class and sits at the top of the Mercedes-Benz SUV model line-up. The company had announced the new model designation in November 2014.

The GLS-Class gets styling changes in line with the company's new design philosophy. The SUV gets a new grille, revised headlamps and tail lamps and new front and rear bumpers.

On the inside, the GLS-Class gets a new three-spoke multifunction steering wheel, a free-standing COMAND infotainment system and a touchpad among other changes.

The GLS is expected to be powered by the same 3.0-litre V6 from the GL 350 d that is on sale currently. This unit produces 255 BHP @ 3,600 rpm and 619 Nm of torque @ 1,600-2,400 rpm. However, the engine will be mated to a 9-speed automatic gearbox instead of the current model's 7-speed unit.

Re: Mercedes-Benz to launch GLS-Class in India on May 18, 2016

The new GLE 350d is priced close to existing GL class, so its obvious GLS has to move up. I expect pricing in mid 80's ex showroom.

9G tronic is a big improvement over the old 7G tronic.

GLS 350d is launched in India at 80.38 lakhs ex-Pune!
Not a bad pricing considering it will be coming with new 9-G tronic transmission.

Re: Mercedes-Benz to launch GLS-Class in India on May 18, 2016

Mercedes-Benz has launched the GLS 350 d in India at a price of Rs. 80.40 lakh (ex-showroom, Pune). The GLS-Class is a replacement for the GL-Class. It sits at the top of the SUV model line-up of the company.

The GLS-Class gets new radiator grille and revised tail lights and headlamps. The roof rails, skid plates, beltline trim strip, luggage compartment handle and side sills get chrome detailing. The car runs on 20-inch, 10 spoke alloy wheels.

The interiors of the GLS-Class are similar to the current S-Class. The car has a boot space of 680 litres, which can be expanded to 2,300 litres by folding the seats down. The leather-wrapped steering wheel gets paddle shifters and heating function. The car offers Apple CarPlay smartphone connectivity as well.

Some of the other features include a panoramic sunroof, air suspension with adaptive dampening, 8-inch display for the infotainment system with a touchpad, leather upholstery, memory function for the driver and passenger seats, parking assist and 360 degree camera.

Coming to safety features, the standard car is equipped with brake assist, adaptive two-stage airbags for driver and front passenger, side bags for driver, front passenger and middle row seats, window bags across all three seat rows and three-point safety belts among other features.

The GLS 350 d is powered by a 3-litre, V6 diesel engine that produces 255 BHP @ 3,400 rpm and 620 Nm of torque @ 1,600-2,400 rpm. The engine is mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission and has five drive modes - comfort, sport, slippery, individual and off-road. Mercedes-Benz claims that the car can accelerate to 100 kph from a standstill in 7.8 seconds.

The GLS 350 d is available in six colours - Citrine Brown Metallic, Designo Diamond White Bright, Cavansite Blue Metallic, Obsidian Black Metallic, Iridium Silver Metallic and Tenorite Grey Metallic.

Mercedes-Benz will build the GLS 350 d at its production facility in Chakan, Maharashtra.

Designo Diamond White Bright goes well on this mammoth SUV. All looks well except for the boring alloys. 21 inch wheels on the pre-facelift version looks good.
