Renault starts work on compact sedan. Same CMF-A platform as Kwid

After tasting super success with the Kwid, Renault is getting ready to develop a sub-4m sedan based on the CMF-A platform.

If Renault's product planners had their way, this all-new sedan could come with the same 180mm Ground Clearance as the Kwid. Also, a low-cost smart hybrid system is also being developed to be offered with this product, on the lines of Maruti-Suzuki's SHVS, to make it more competitive in the segment it will ply in.

The CMF-A platform doesn't have a diesel option in it's line-up, and there are chances that Renault's sub-4m sedan could come in a petrol-only avatar.

Quote:
CEO Carlos Ghosn has unequivocally stated, “There will be many more CMF-A cars for India,” and from what we hear, a sub-four-metre sedan could be next.

A proposal for the car is already being worked on to see how competitive it is likely to be in its class, and design centres in India are working hard to deliver an interesting profile. Product planners, however, are making the job of the designers quite difficult; they want to stick with a ground clearance of 180mm, which could be a bit of a challenge.

re: Renault starts work on compact sedan. Same CMF-A platform as Kwid

Wonder why everyone is keen on getting a compact sedan into the market. It seems a saturated segment and does not seem to be a segment which will grow considering the fact that Indian customers are now more open to premium hatchbacks (and of course compact SUV's). Keeping aside the Dzire with it's 15-20K numbers, the rest of the market is ~7-8000 units. It seems too small a pie to be fighting over. GM is also working on the Beat Essentia Compact Sedan and we have the Tata Tiago based compact sedan coming.

On the other hand, with a 180 mm or more of ground clearance and Kwid kind of looks, maybe we will see a new segment of vehicles- Something between a compact sedan and a compact SUV. Wonder what we can call that?? Renault's Marketing team will be licking their lips in anticipation. An opportunity to create an entirely new segment with a fancy name.

They should bring the next gen Logan here in India with a different name. Don't know why they need to develop an all new car, when a capable car is still there.

Re: Renault starts work on compact sedan. Same CMF-A platform as Kwid

According to Renault India CEO and managing director, Mr Sumit Sawhney, all future products based on the CMF-A platform, including this Renault sub-4m compact sedan which is in the development stage, will be unique, innovative and big on features, just like the Renault Kwid.

In short, we can look forward to multiple game-changers in the respective segments these products will ply in.

Quote:
"Renault India will roll out one new car every year. Several of them will be new global cars that are designed in India and based on the CMF-A platform as 70% of the Indian passenger car market comprise sub-4 metre cars. The remaining 30% of the market will be addressed from our global portfolio," Sawhney explained.

Though he did not elaborate on the future product line, a crossover, a compact sedan and a compact SUV are among the possibilities. To be innovative, the emphasis will be on design and features, taking a cue from the success of Kwid that is the biggest car in the entry-level segment with SUV-like styling (bulging arches, high ground clearance, 300 litre boot) and first in segment features (touch screen navigation system).

Re: Renault starts work on compact sedan. Same CMF-A platform as Kwid

I always wondered, how the Kwid sedan would look like. Its been quite a while since I did anything on PS, since here it is.

This after assuming that Renault won't go with a new top hat and decides to retain every existing panel till the C pillar.

The changes:

# Kept the boot fat, to go with the bulky proportions of the Kwid. Plus, it will make it have a ginormous space!

# The roof slopes down once the rear door ends, thus retaining the same door.

# Assuming that the black cladding on the wheel wells will be replaced with shiny plastics, so did that.

# Added a vinyl after the rear quarter glass and moved the variant moniker to the vinyl.

# Upsized the wheels. Please ignore those huge discs, I got too lazy to wipe them out.

They already have Kwid look alike (fascia) Symbol (Dacia Logan) which is available with a range of engines in international markets right from 1.2L to 1.5L. They could squeeze it to sub 4m!?

They will not, because that is what the Mahindra Verito Vibe tried to do on the same Logan platform and that idea didn't work out.
As per the news item, this compact sedan will be based on their new CMF-A platform and as of now Quid and Redi-Go are the only products based on that.
My belief is that this new compact sedan will retain their SUV DNA like Quid and will turn out to be a spacious sedan. Lets wait and see!

Hope they bring out a safer car this time around unlike the Kwid which failed miserably bad in the crash tests.

@ashutoshb - The rendering is too good. The side profile resembles the scala / sunny and will go well with the family look.

Very nice work.
Boot could've been more fused with the rest of the car, rather than like a sedan. I think Kwid is not a car to be converted into a sedan.

Re: Renault starts work on compact sedan. Same CMF-A platform as Kwid

It seems to be the next logical thing to do which is build a compact sedan, however the Kwid itself with a micro SUVish stance would not really gel well in a sedan avataar.

It would most probably look like a mini version of the SX4 which incidentally has a crossover/ hatch origin. It would be better for then to build a full fledged mini sub 4m SUV competing with the EcoSport etc and at a very competitive price at that.

Look at the example from Mahindras positioning KUV100 as a mini SUV, though it is a hatch for all purposes, this new one from Renault can play in that space.

They should do a sub 4m mini Van and target the Wagon R.

A better built datson go + from the ground up.

That's an untapped market.

Renault shelves plans for Kwid-based sedan

Stagnating compact sedan sales and impending GST takes its toll on segment.

Renault Logan Stepway Cross-Sedan being launched in Russia already looks so much like an extended Kwid. Just hope thay they bring it in on the CMF-A Platform to reduce costs and launch it as it is. Pics from IndianAutosBlog (link - https://indianautosblog.com/2018/08/...+Autos+blog%29)
