Force Motors opens new plant to manufacture Mercedes engines

Force Motors has set up a new manufacturing plant at Chakan, which is located near Pune, Maharashtra. The new plant will be supplying engines for all 'made in India' Mercedes-Benz cars. Force has been responsible for producing Mercedes engines since 1997, and has also recently started supplying front and rear axles of all Mercedes cars produced in the country.

Force started working on the new plant in June 2015 and the production of the first engine began in February 2016. Force Motors has invested around Rs. 100 crore for the new plant, which is a part of the Rs. 700 crore worth commitment that the company had made to Mercedes-Benz. The remaining amount needs to be spent within the next two years.

The new Force Motors plant in Chakan is spread over an area of 1,30,000 square feet, which is dedicated to manufacture inline-four and V6 engines for Mercedes cars produced in the country. In the current configuration, the plant has an annual capacity of developing 20,000 engines and 20,000 front and rear axles. But both these capacities can be expanded depending on the market requirements.

Force Motors can't sell cars, but they sure can build engines. Last year, Force inaugurated a plant for BMW engines too - related thread.

That is certainly encouraging news. Force Motors' entry into the SUV space (Force One) has so far not been very successful. I hope this new foray in engine manufacturing does well.

As you mentioned, they have been in the business for a long time, making the Matador cargo van (FWD) with reasonable success for many years, and prior to that they also made a 3-wheeled horror(also a FWD van, initially with a 2-stroke 2-cyl engine!), both under the Tempo brand.

Manufacturing (in our country) is a fairly elastic term and encompasses efforts starting from screw-driver technology right up to complete turn-key projects.

Not entirely new I would say, They have relative experience in assembling engines for BMW and Merc, they also assemble axles for Mercedes Benz, so they should do well

Does Force also build petrol engines for the Germans in India? If not, the diesel ban will probably hurt their business bad.

You bet they do, including the 6-cylinders! No reason why this partnership would exist only for diesels.

By the way, the next time a Tempo Trax rolls up next to you, remember it's the same guys who built that engine under your S-Class' hood .

Prasan Firodia, Managing Director, Force Motors said, "The inauguration of this plant marks a significant step in our 45-year-long association with Mercedes Benz." The new plant is spread over 1,30,000 sq.ft. and has eight lines that produce and test up to 14 engine variants. The variants include four-cylinder petrol and diesel mills, as well as six-cylinder V-type petrol and diesel engines.

Good to see them push further. Into a business that they KNOW, rather than get into full blown selling without any partnership.

They probably can't get into partnership due to the terms of agreement with these biggies.

There's probably an error in the first line, 1.3lac sq ft is just ~3 acres.
