I disagree with your opinion. Most of the people don't know that car is backing up by seeing the reverse lights. Also if you use horn, people at the back side of the car think that you are honking at the people in front of your car. My opinion is, better to have a reverse horn with less noise and a switch for deactivating at unnecessary situations.

Whoever installs / uses a reversing horn is absolutely bonkers, selfish and has simply no consideration for the intensive noise pollution that he / she is causing. It is illegal and definitely so. I simply cannot think of even one good reason why anybody should have a reversing horn.

In crowded market place or whatever, simply before getting into the car just say to anybody who is behind - 'excuse me, I am moving my car'. Then inch back slowly.

In normal conditions, just use your side and rearview mirrors or turn around to ensure nobody is there. Reversing is supposed to be done slowly, so that anybody behind or coming at the rear can have time to move and adjust accordingly.

I very often have to reverse in crowded places and out of a narrow driveway into a crowded road. I simply take it slowly and have never faced any problems.

If you guys in favour of them think making noise is going to help, you are quite mistaken.

In fact I quite hate the blipping noise of the security systems as well. Everytime somebody gets into or out of a car the damn things make absurd sounds. The security system should use only flashers and only in case it has been compromised, can beep/blip once to let one know.

I agree that it is a bad thing. I used to hate the reverse horns but didn't that so many people also hates it. I was given the option of installing a same one in my car as a bonus but I had to refuse.

But some feels that it is absoulitely necessary. How about having a mike in front of the driver and a powerful speaker in the back. This way you have the choice of language, songs and abuses (kyon be dikayee nahi deta kya etc, good love song when you see a pretty girl). It can be automatically kept shut in peaceful areas and no problem with patriotism also ;-)

@jat, now that is what could be termed a classic example of out-of-the-box thinking. :)

Hey Jat,

That's hilarious man LOL. This reminds me some ambulances with mike requesting the cars to give way.

Reverse horn sounds a sheer nuisance to me. My building society has around 300 cars and around 10% of them which are on an average 5 years old car have in them, most of them being Maruti 800s and Omni and one Opel Astra. Though I must admit that we kind of have got used to this sound. And for that reason only (i.e. It being just a background sound and simply get ignored), reverse horn servers no genuine purpose.

Good part is that reverse horn treand seems to be fading away, at least in cities like Bangalore. I haven't seen a single new car in my society having reverse horn. Also having reverse horn is very much associated with taxi or rural vehicle where reverse horn seems to be preceived as trendy stuff.

Bravo! Rev horn smacks of pomposity and laziness, period. Read my post on p.2.

Jat, how about a continuous forward horn for added safety?:Shockked:

I, personally, find the reverse horn extremely irritating. But then I also find the autocop lock and unlock door sound irritating and thats why I used to always silently lock and unlock doors which would also disable the reverse horn. But reverse horns are practical in India and are a necessary evil. The regular horn doesn't work here. Pedestrians, other drivers in front don't move away when you honk at them so what are the chances that people standing behind your car would move when you sound the forward horn? Yes, reverse horns do result in sound pollution as correctly pointed out by many posts here but so does the regular horn. Besides, since when did the average Indian start getting bothered with high sound levels. We, as a society, are noisy. With all the constant honking, our roads are extremely noisy, our weddings are noisy and so are indian festivals. If we don't find noise pollution in all of the above then why single out the reverse horn?

Reverse horn definitely helps in crowded places like busstand, where the public attention would be on roads waiting for the public transport. You can feel the need of reverse horn when a guy/gal standing right in back of your car looking at the other direction or chatting with somebody else on hand phone. You press your horn or stand on your accelerator pedal (ofcourse with gear in neutral), no reponse, you will be forced to get out your car to request them to move aside.

In those circumstances reverse horn would be of help. But having said that, 99% I do a soft opening and closing using my remote. I personally hate those sound of reverse horn, but that doesn't mean reverse horn is Bad or useless.

Try the silence and you will find it golden. We should be moving towards a less noisy society and the Courts and legislation is already making it happen. Silence will most certainly lower your bp and help you live longer.

And as I posted earlier, do you think anybody moves with the reverse horn? If at all, it should come with a disabling switch.

Nowadays the cacophony of reverse horns, autocops, etc. at 5-6 in the morning is extremely irritating and simply not necessary.

Please ban these thingys and arrest anybody who makes noise with those. It's very much pure, utter rubbish thing to have in a car.
The car security manufacturers should rather include reverse sensors in their kits rather than these nuisance.

If thats the case then automech exhausts and sub woofers etc should also be banned. lol:

Sorry for being a lil off topic here but who all here think that the proximity sensor people install in cars nowadays (the one which beeps if there is an object near the car while its moving) is useful ?

IMHO its a sheer waste of money.

Hey, does everybody blasts with their subwoofers early in the morning and inside an apartment parking? And not all the automechs produce high volume noise while reversing. These both things are beautifully executed by reverse horns. And there's no switching off for this nuisance except a few.

What an original and whacky idea..? Why was this not thought of earlier...?
