Mahindra's Executive Director, Dr. Pawan Goenka, has confirmed that the Indian automaker would be developing a new SUV, which will be based on the SsangYong X100 platform. This is the same platform that underpins the Tivoli, which is expected to make its Indian debut in the near future.
Speaking at the FIA Formula E championship in London, Dr. Goenka confirmed that Mahindra is currently working on two new platforms, one of which will be the Tivoli-based SUV. This vehicle is expected to be launched in the next 14 to 16 months. On the other hand, details of the second platform haven’t been revealed, though the final product is expected to be unveiled by 2018.
What must be noted here is the fact that Mahindra already has a crowded compact SUV portfolio, with the TUV300 and NuvoSport. With the SsangYong Tivoli too expected to enter the market, it will be interesting to see how Mahindra places its new SUV. It is likely to be placed higher than the NuvoSport, but lower than the Tivoli.
Rumours suggest that the new SUV will mark the debut of an all-new 1.5-litre petrol engine, which will then also be offered in the current range of SUVs such as the TUV300 and NuvoSport. It remains to be seen whether Mahindra plonks the Tivoli's 1.6-litre diesel engine in its new SUV, or introduces a new power mill.

Mahindra's Tivoli-based all-new SUV will be yet another addition to it's sub-4m compact SUV lineup. Expected to be priced at a slight premium over the NuvoSport/TUV300 and based on the X100 platform which underpins the Ssangyong Tivoli, it will come with a petrol engine option and will be marketed as an urban SUV (similar to the Ford EcoSport).
The other all-new platform, under joint development by Ssangyong and Mahindra, will be a large 7-seater global SUV which will be a flagship vehicle for both companies. The Ssangyong version of this 7-seater global SUV will mark Ssangyong's entry in the US market by 2020. This all-new flagship is expected to rival the Toyota Fortuner.

The company and its Indian parent are now discussing development of new joint platforms, he added.

It's always been a mystery to me why Mahindra balked at bringing any more Ssangyong offerings to India after Rexton. I should have thought models like Korando and Tivoli would have brought in fair numbers if priced competitively.
I wonder if there are any winds of change pertaining to the Scorpio's successor in this communique. Mahindra can develop all the micro-UVs it wants, but realizes that the Scorpio's successor is key to its future.

Zigwheels, Mahindra has confirmed that they are starting the development of a sub-compact SUV soon.
It will be dubbed as the
S201, and will rival the Hyundai Creta and the Renault Duster. It could be ready for launch by mid-2018.

The S201 will be based on the same platform as the Tivoli. That said Mahindra categorically pointed out that the car will look completely different, and won't be a rebranding exercise.
Mahindra also said that as far as design goes, the company will be applying its resources at its recentlyacquired Italian design studio, Pininfarina. In addition, SsangYong too will be contributing to the design of the car.
Mahindra is also co-developing a new 1.5-litre petrol engine in collaboration with Ssangyong which could find its way into the S201's engine bay.

This is on expected lines! Otherwise, Mahindra would not be testing the Tivoli so extensively after announcing that plans to launch this SsangYong product in India had been shelved.
It's interesting to note their statement that the S201 is going to look completely different from the Tivoli. So it may turn out to be a new "top hat" sharing the Tivoli's underpinnings. Or it may turn out to be a badge-engineered Tivoli with re-designed exteriors (especially the front & rear).
Whatever, I think the 4m+ 5-seater compact SUV segment is going to see a lot of action over the course of this year and the next. Renault's Kaptur will replace the Duster and Nissan is likely to bring in their Kicks in place of the Terrano. Mahindra's S201 will join the party and who knows, Peugeot or Citroën may begin their innings in India by entering this segment first. :)
