Mahindra Scorpio coming with a true mild-hybrid system (aka SHVS). EDIT: Now launched @ 9.74 lakh

Mahindra & Mahindra is poised to launch their flagship SUV, the Scorpio, with an all-new mild hybrid system. This tech will be introduced in only the 2.2L variants of the Scorpio (Delhi/NCR customers will be disappointed).

To be called as the "Intelli-Hybrid", this new technology will provide electrical assistance to the engine through an integrated starter motor which will function as an alternator that charges the battery during driving, and also as a motor that will provide mild electrical boosts to the engine when needed. This is in contrast to the earlier "Micro Hybrid" tech in the existing Scorpio, which was just an automatic start-stop system.

The "Intelli-Hybrid" will also be equipped with a larger capacity battery, a start-stop system and a brake energy recuperation module. But this new hybrid tech won't be a full hybrid either, because the car won't be running on all-electric power at any time.

Interestingly, the new system will only be introduced on the 2.2-litre diesel engine and not its 1.99-litre Delhi-NCR specific derivative as Mahindra had begun work on this system with the 2.2 unit well before the downsized engine came into the mainstream thanks to the Delhi diesel ban.

Expect more Mahindra models to come equipped with this tech in future.

What is the advantage of this technology to the car owner?

Slightly better fuel economy due to additional use of electrical power, and (possibly) reduced prices due to hybrid sops offered by the government.

Hardly any advantage in terms of fuel economy. It's not a full-hybrid system (like the Toyota Camry's, as an example).

However, because of the government's lack of understanding this technology & their inability to differentiate, owners will benefit from:

- A significantly lower price! The excise duty on SHVS / mild hybrid cars is merely 12.50%. Compare that to 30% for a regular SUV and you can understand the difference. Mahindra can easily shave 1 - 1.5 lakhs off the Scorpio's price.

- Unaffected by Delhi's odd-even rules.

The Ciaz & Ertiga recently went through whopping price cuts of upto 68,000! This'll be a shot in the arm for the Scorpio. Am sure an XUV500 SHVS will shortly follow.

Mahindra is so much quicker to react to market conditions than Tata and gang. First, they launched the 1.99L engine with lightning speed. While Tata is still wondering how it will engineer a Safari 1.99L, Mahindra is getting ready with its version of SHVS . Mahindra is alive, Tata is snoozing.

The "Intelli-Hybrid" tech is exclusive to the 2.2L Scorpio for now. The 1.99L oil burner doesn't get it.

Delhi/NCR customers won't be getting this benefit, unless the Supreme Court acts on it's previous indication of revoking the 2,000cc+ diesel ban (link), or Mahindra extends this technology to the 1.99L Scorpio variants.

Oh yes, that seems a great reason for M&M to incorporate this tech.

I hope they do pass on the benefits to the consumers or at least part of the benefit.

To what extent that needs to be seen.

Only if some breather is given on the sale of 2000cc+ vehicles. M&M seems to take the cue from Maruti.

That is the only thing on which M&M is thriving. In most of the segments, their vehicles are selling because of lack of proper alternatives. However question marks over the reliability of this 'swiftly churned out' products will always be there. People are still doubtful on what exactly M&M did to launch the 1.99 version and whether that would lead to any additional niggles in the long run. Even about this SHVS, whether it would affect the basic functionalities of the vehicle, needs to be seen; after all additional electronics is not the forte of their portfolio. But amazing is the response from TATA; indeed M&M should be thankful to them for letting them take away the benefits by not launching anything comparable to their segments in most of the categories.

re: Mahindra Scorpio coming with a true mild-hybrid system (aka SHVS). EDIT: Now launched @ 9.74 lakh

Glad to see M&M finally taking the plunge. Their hybrid (call it mild-hybrid, SHVS, intelli-hybrid - its just jargon) was first displayed at an earlier Auto Expo a few years ago.

It had the motor/generator as well as the KERS (or Kinetic Energy Recovery System), another name for the brake energy recovery system. Thereafter it just seemed to drop off the radar and later (after I became a member in early 2014) I wondered why it had not come up in any of the T-BHP threads.

Anyway, better late than never - and one can't help wondering when Tata Motors is going to wake up. All that JLR high-tech still in the deep freeze?

M&M is experienced in working with regulations by using it's own interpretations of the same. This is similar to how we figure out ways to evade taxes. (I guess we all do it.) It is odd that TATA is so slow to react. Even Maruti is learning the ropes at a fast pace.

No benefit to the customer except the benefit of reduced tax due to the inability of the govt. to figure this out.

re: Mahindra Scorpio coming with a true mild-hybrid system (aka SHVS). EDIT: Now launched @ 9.74 lakh

Mahindra has quietly launched the Scorpio 2.2L "Intelli-Hybrid" range, ranging from the S4 2WD to the S10 2WD variants (manual only), between Rs 9.74 lakh - Rs 12.84 lakh (ex-showroom, Navi Mumbai).

The Scorpio's base S2 variant will continue to be equipped with the former "Micro-Hybrid" tech.

There's no reason for them to not eventually offer it on the 1.99L diesel. And they will for sure. Delhi-NCR makes for the biggest market in India. Mahindra won't let go of an easy way to get a price & odd-even advantage.

It's a smart company then, no? The market is open and anyone who wants to compete with them is free to do so.

You talking about this XUV500? It was a proper hybrid, not a starter-generator type mild one.

More information on this thread.

Yes it definitely points out towards their smartness or alternately the lack of it on the part of their competitors. Surprisingly the void is very clearly visible in one or two particular segments where M&M wins hand down and still that is not enough to awaken the others!

No, actually I wasn't. I was talking about this :

The above links are to the 2008 SAE congress (my mistake when I mentioned an Auto Expo!), where Mahindra displayed their diesel-electric Scorpio hybrid. Thereafter, it seemed to do a disappearing act and M&M have now re-surfaced with their mild-hybrid Scorpio

Re: Mahindra Scorpio coming with a true mild-hybrid system (aka SHVS). EDIT: Now launched @ 9.74 lak

Source: http://indianautosblog.com/2016/07/m...aunched-237833

Scorpio Intelli-Hybrid launched at INR 12.84 lakhs Ex-showroom Mumbai.

"Intelli-hybrid replaces Mahindra’s Micro-hybrid system (basically an auto start stop feature), and is available in all grades of the Scorpio equipped with the 2.2L mHawk engine (S4, S4+, S4+ 4WD, S6+, S8, S10-2WD and S10-4WD). The base S2 grade with the 2.5L m2DICR engine, Scorpio automatic and the Scorpio 1.99L mHawk (sold only in Delhi NCR) variants are not equipped with the Intelli-Hybrid system."

My question: Isn't it too much of money they are asking for it?
