Checked Tigor JTP @ Kropex Singasandra Bangalore showroom. Display car has around 1300 KM on the ODO. Test drive starts after few days once they receive it. Here are few pictures.

Looks like the powerdrift team is heading the tbhp way. Albeit for a good reason. They took some time to put up this fun and crisp first impression of the twins. And they seem to be working on a "fuller" in detail review too. But first impression from both thbp mods and the powerdrift review seems positive.

Autocar on the other hand took some time getting their video online which was not at all different from their written review. They say the engine is still behind MS's 1.2 as far as city driving is concerned. I don't know what to make of that comparison.

Personally, this variant has changed the way I look at the Tigor. It seems like a good combination of practicality and fun. It has the boot space for a long distance trip and if it provides a fuel economy similar to a C segment petrol sedan in the "City", I'm sold!!

The K-Series engines are easily among the best in the business, especially the 1.2L. Since those are naturally aspirated, the low end will be good Vs the turbo engine from TATA or others. And that's expected.

What they probably are trying to say is that while the JTP versions are fun in open road, it could be a little difficult to drive in bumper traffic since the low end is (supposedly) weak. So, for a daily driver, in case there is lot of usage in bumper traffic, it may be a pain.

Having said that, for someone who can't afford two cars - the JTP may be a compromise to live with (city drives) if they love to drive and have fun.

Re: The Tata Tigor JTP & Tiago JTP. EDIT: Launched at Rs 6.39 - 7.49 lakhs

Got my hands on the Tiago JTP for a short spin. I would be getting this for a much longer period sometime this week to test it thoroughly. Just hoping my schedule gives me time to have some fun with this car.

The Tata Tigor JTP & Tiago JTP. EDIT: Launched at Rs 6.39 - 7.49 lakhs-img_20181106_174325.jpg

Initial Observations

1. Steering wheel is so much nicer to hold compared to the regular Tiago/Tigor. It isn't too light and does not feel vague compared to the regular ones.

2. Nice intake grunt and exhaust note.

3. Revs nicely for a 3 cylinder, but do not expect 6000 rpm plus revs as it feels strained.

4. Car had done 400 odd kms and with no breaks. Clutch felt it had lost its bite and could sense a little clutch burning smell.

5. Suspension much stiffer than the softly sprung regular Tiago/Tigor. Gives a nice feel.

6. Brakes felt a bit spongy, could be due to repeated runs.

7. A good dose of power is felt once you cross the 3500 rpm mark. There is turbo lag. A remap in this will be interesting.

Will keep an eye for the clutch and brakes when I get to spend longer time with the car. Did not bother to check the on road price for Bangalore.

That is a big price difference between the hatch and the CS version of essentially the same car. The cost of the Tigor is similar to that of the Aspire Titanium Diesel on road.

The 1.2K engine in the Swift is notorious for relatively poor low end pull. I can vouch for that since I have been driving one for the last 6.5 years, and till 2000RPM, there is not much action to be had. However, it is overall still one of the best 1.2 engines around. If the JTP engines are worse off in terms of low end pull (which is quite possible, given that they are not naturally aspirated), then that would be a pain to reconcile and live with in maddening city bumper to bumper traffic.

In other words, not sure how much sense this car would make as a daily driver through the typical rigmarole of home to office and back. Of course, I am sure this would be a fun weekend ride and a great second car!

The tyres on the car are the normal Apollo Alnac 185/60R15 84T. It's not even the Alnac 4G. These are the ones found on the Vento/ Polo/Ameo.

I wonder what's so special about these tyres? In fact Tata had mentioned that it was specially made. I know that the regular ones are very good from experience but what's the key differentiation between this and the regular ones?

I guess both Tata and Apollo tyres need to answer this.

I think there's a difference in the variant specs. Do have a look. Touchscreen, Climate Control and maybe a few others. I haven't looked at it closely, but I remember reading about it here.

This might come across as a rant, but frankly speaking there is pretty much no vehicle that can provide any kind of driving pleasure within city limits, with the kind of traffic we have. A speed of 50-60 kmph consistently over few stretches is a bare minimum requirement for anyone to even consider performance and fun as a buying factor. This much has became painfully clear to me when I recently shifted from Chandigarh to Hyderabad. I just slug my City petrol from point A to B, it seldom touches 3K rpm even

With almost every vehicle having a terrible low end nowadays, at least a turbo petrol would give decent amount of torque right from around 2K odd rpm. So I'd say the JTP Tiago 'should' ideally beat the Swift in the fun department, even within city limits.

PS: Although the BHP and 0-100 related figures are very similar to the City, It would be revealing to know the 30-80 kind of timings for this car which could reflect the true nature of the engine.

Tell me about it. My City SOMETIMES sees 4K, and that too only cos I make a point that it does on the ORR I use to commute to office daily. Otherwise it's daily b2b slog.

Something I'm very interested as well, BHP is just a few shy of the City, even though hugely different engines. Would be good to see how it stacks up vis-a-vis the proven iVTEC.

Simple recipe for fun is an open gap in front of you and 2nd gear with a car with short gearing like my spark, 2nd gear is fun to take till 40 and then 3rd till 80 (if there is a gap big enough) but then i shift into 4th or sometimes just 5th because holding the same revs is no fun. I guess Tiago won't be much different and infact it has a taller 3rd gear which would make 2nd gear that much more fun to rev up in.

But this kind of driving can only be done in the roads which are relatively jam free and since i don't commute much, the Delhi traffic has made me change my ways that i prefer to go to any place as late as possible in the night, just to avoid traffic. And sometimes there's good fun to be had. Averaged 60kmph over a 12km run on ring road the night of diwali. Top speed was definitely not 80
