Volkswagen imports the Tiguan. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 27 - 31 lakhs

Mod Note: Our Tiguan Report has been taken live at this link. Please continue the discussion over on the new thread. Thanks!

A single unit of the 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan SUV has been recently imported into our country for testing purposes.

The imported unit is powered by a 2.0L, 1968cc diesel engine which produces 148BHP of power and is paired to a 7-speed DSG or a 6-speed manual box.

The Tiguan was showcased earlier this year at the 2016 Auto Expo, and now we can be sure that it will be launched in India by Volkswagen sometime in 2017.

That is the cost of the imported prototype.

There is a very good chance that Volkswagen will import the Tiguan into India as CKD (Completely Knocked Down) units, to be assembled locally. This will help bring the prices down and the Tiguan will compete in the Honda CR-V segment.

Of course, full details will only be known in the days to come.

That's because of Air Import, freight also gets added while calculating custom duty so we see a higher assessable value

re: Volkswagen imports the Tiguan. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 27 - 31 lakhs

I am in USA and I've leased a 2016 Tiguan 2.0 TSI S.
I've been driving it for the last 4 months and here are my impressions.

Pros:
- Great looks in and out (not overly done chrome!)
- Nice finish without any hard edges
- Pleasuresome driving
- Vehicle's ability to pull once the turbo kicks in
- Great VW dynamics (Power, Torque, Corner maneuverability - mine is a FWD but feels nearly an AWD)
- Leather seats right from basic trim
- Good knee support
- Cargo Management
- Highly responsive A/C unit
- Nice wipers for front windshield and rear glass
- Regular features not given a miss (Bluetooth for handsfree, Mute, Infotainment, floor mats, cargo mats, Six speaker sound system etc.)
- Some special color choices (mine is a Panther Grey)
- L shaped breaking lights
- Seat height adjustment and enough glass space for petites too!

Cons:
- Premium price for a vehicle of this size
- Could have given more safety (such as lane departure, sensor beep to warn a frontal collision etc.) at this price
- Driver/Passenger seat in S version doesn't have enough lumbar support
- Noisy before Turbo kicks in
- MPG (Kmpl) a huge let down
- Recommended to use a Top Tier Gasoline (adding salt to injury)
- Tiny rear assist camera in S version (sometimes confusing too!)
- No apple play/android connect in S version
- Issue with the infotainment in S version when running Google Maps/Waze (the first word of the navigation announcement will be missed; this will not happen for telephone calls though; no fix from VW yet!)

Despite the shortcomings, I am reasonably satisfied with this vehicle. The vehicle for sure handles well, keeps the occupants comfortable and cruises on highways effortlessly.

That said, I'll think twice to extend the lease or buy it after the lease is over.
Let's hope that the India version will have lesser cons than what I've listed

If this is going to be in the 25-35 lakh SUV territory, then I see serious competition between the Tiguan and the skoda Kodiaq for " best of the rest ". ( since I presume the Fortuner will be numero uno with its new version ).

Somehow liked the design language of kodiaq way better.

Tiguan spotted in India, launching in 2017.

Since there is absolutely no camouflage on the vehicles, we can see that at least one version will receive halogen headlamps, DRLs, roof rails, 17-inch alloy wheels and LED tail lamps. This might be the top-end Highline trim

The 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan be offered in the 2.0 TDI, four cylinder engine which churns out 148 horsepower coupled with the 4motion DSG transmission. The 7 speed DSG gear box will keep the power transmission smooth and is likely to be offred in an optional all wheel drive setup. To keep the pricing competitive it is likely that Volswagen might bring this Car via the CKD route and will assemble it locally at the carmaker’s Aurangabad plant. The 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan is likely to be priced between 20-25lakhs

re: Volkswagen imports the Tiguan. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 27 - 31 lakhs

If VW can manage to price the Tiguan in the bracket of 20-25 lakhs, it will definitely have takers. But the VW guys were quite sure that the Tiguan will be priced north of 30 lakhs ex-showroom as discussed during the VW Experience Tour in Pune.

Skoda's Kodiaq is speculated to debut in that price 25 - 30 lakh range and interesting to see where Tiguan would fall in pricing.

All reviews point to Kodiaq having an edge over Tiguan!

re: Volkswagen imports the Tiguan. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 27 - 31 lakhs

What is it with VAG sticking to underwhelming engines for their new cars in India? First the 40 lac A4 with a measly 1.4l engine, and now a near two ton SUV with 148bhp.

I want the 3.0 tdi Touareg back. I want to see the new Passat with a 2.0 Tsi. We are content with paying so much money for mediocre bhp.

This looks fantastic but if priced above 30L then prognosis will be dead on arrival, just like Polo TSI 25L variant.

More SUV's that launch with such ridiculous pricing more XUV starts looking VFM, especially AT version.

If its above 30 Ex showroom, almost all sales will go to the X1 or Q3 which are miles ahead in brand value. As it is, the similarly priced Fortuner or Endeavour will positively take away sales. The category this thing is carving out for itself is somewhere in the premium-ish soft roader segment which currently has no cars other than the Yeti and CR-V.

What would be sensible is to price this at base 23.xx and top 26-27.xx, so on road its around 30. This is the max it can get away with if it wants to do okay numbers. Decent numbers would come from base 21.xx and top 23-24.xx, so people get the euro feel from a VFM compromise with a tall seating position, much akin to Superb in the sedan segment when it came out.

Kodiaq and Tiguan should surely be priced within 1.xx lakh of each other, trim-on-trim.

If the Tucson which looks like an obese hatchback can charge 25 LACS ex showroom, VW and Skoda will surely look to charge a premium over that for their elegantly designed and engineered equivalents.

re: Volkswagen imports the Tiguan. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 27 - 31 lakhs

If this will be priced above 30 lakhs, there are typical brand savvy people who will prefer GLA or Q3 over this. May be another story of Superb/Passat will start in VW's range.
