Re: Indian Army's new official vehicle - the Tata Safari Storme!

Good friend Aneesh Surendran has this to share about the Army-spec Tata Safari Stormes:

Quote:
The Safari Storme for the Army is somewhat different than the one available for the civilians.
It has a different ECU, engine tune, undisclosed power and torque outputs. But then again that's not something new and has been the same with military Gypsys and other military/Special Public Utility vehicles (Eg. firetrucks), courtesy of non civilian emission norms.

Apart from the tune state, the military version is equipped with the following over civilian VX 4X4;
1. ESP: Electronic Stability Program
2. Roll-over Mitigation
3. Traction Control System : ABS system applies the brakes on the wheel that does not have traction / is not in contact with the ground during off-roading, so torque gets transferred to the wheels with traction…Works in tandem with TOD transfer case.
4. Torque On Demand transfer case : ability to distribute power between rear and front axles, depending on traction availability.
5. Absence of Anti-roll bars : improves wheel articulation at the cost of lowered high-speed stability.

Developed for the military Safari Storme, most of these features are available in the new Tata Hexa XT 4x4 and are expected to follow suit in upcoming 4x4 cars from Tata Motors.
The Hexa XT 4x4, Force Gurkha (rear and front diff lock axles) and 2016 Mahindra Thar CRDE 4X4 MLD (rear wheels only) are the only three cars on sale currently which are south of Rs 60 Lakhs (Land Rover Discovery Sport) that have the capability of locking it's wheels to stop wheel slipping on the wheel with low traction.

Re: Indian Army's new official vehicle - the Tata Safari Storme!

So finally TATA safari storme is on a tuff duty.

Read the news in a Hindi newspaper. First lot has delivered, which counts 3192 STORMEs.

This lot will be send to Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh and in coming years 35000 GYPSY and other vehicles will be replaced by STORME.

The newspaper says that STORME has 800kg load carrying capacity whereas Gypsy is only capable for 500kg.

As this replacement will grow up, the last lot of MM550(s) & Gypsy(s) will be disposed from Army and some legendary vehicles will not be available for public to get restore and modifying according to their taste and requirement.

Re: Indian Army's new official vehicle - the Tata Safari Storme!

Saw this news on Cartoq/Google newsstand. Wonder how good these gypsys are. Anyway, for the Gypsy lovers among us.

Buy cheap used Indian Army Maruti Gypsy SUVs, register as new for 15 years! https://google.com/newsstand/s/CBIwsd2rpjw

Re: Indian Army's new official vehicle - the Tata Safari Storme!

Getting '404 Page Not Found' every time I hit that link !

Anyway, that could be something -- Buy cheap used Indian Army Maruti Gypsy SUVs, register as new for 15 years. That was always the case for military disposal vehicles, I got my JONGA registered as a 1986 make, even though it is actually a 1964 Nissan Patrol.
But now-a-days the BS4 rule prevents disposal vehicles from being registered in big cities, as a result of which Calcuttans cannot register auctioned vehicles at true location, and have to get them registered at Jharkhand or Nagaland or some such false address. This leads to complications at a later stage.
Many Gypsies are lying at big disposal depots, where previously Jongas and Gypsies used to sell like hot cakes !

What he is referring to is differential lock. Rear differential lock is also available in the 3.2 Litre 4x4 new Ford endeavour with torque on demand. And the car is priced way below 60 lakhs.

Tata Motors has not revealed engine specs. But they did say that compared to the regular car sold to civilians, the one sold to Indian Army is powered by an engine which delivers 70% more power and 200% more torque.

So if the civilian Safari delivers 154 hp and 400 Nm via the 2.2 liter Varicor 400 engine, the Indian Army Safari delivers about 262 hp and 800 Nm.

800Nm - that is awesome, truly King of the road.

Re: Indian Army's new official vehicle - the Tata Safari Storme!

I don't this the statement of making 200% more torque is true.

It has been probably taken out of context. In all probability they might have stated up to 200% more torque. Since that is possible using the Low Ratio in 4×4 mode.

Whoever has said 70% more power and 200% more torque is wrong. I don't agree. A 2.2 Litre engine cannot deliver 800 nm. of torque even if it is heavily tuned.
For 800 nm torque, the horsepower should be around 400 (roughly)
Torque can be increased drastically by locking the differentials and engaging low range 4x4 gearbox. Even if that is done in the Safari the figures seem to be too high.
The Mercedes G wagon, one of the most expensive 4x4 SUV delivers 420 HP and 760 nm of torque. On the other hand the Bentley Bentayga , another luxury SUV has about 600 bhp and 900 nm of torque.

Tata Safari Storme GS800 (General Service 800) is the vehicle name for the Indian Army and comes with a payload capacity of 800kg, 60 per cent more than the standard model!

The criteria set by the Indian Army for the vehicle selection were - hard top, 800 kg payload capacity and air conditioning and the Tata Safari Storme with a cool matte green paint job successfully met all the conditions set by one of the largest armies of the world.

Max Power(ps) 156
Max Torque(Nm) 400

800 is NOT Torque!

Thanks for clarifying. 800 nm of torque is absurd. None the less the storme is a better choice than the Scorpio. The Storme will deliver good service to the Indian Army

Re: Indian Army's new official vehicle - the Tata Safari Storme!

Besides the Safari replacing trusted old Amby, Gypsy and other Maruti staff vehicles, the new troop carriers for combat are being tested and do not know their future prospects for the IA.

Anyway here are the two:

1. Tata LSV
2. Mahindra Axe

I believe the 800 mentioned in the posts above didn't mean the payload, but from the statement that, the army safaris made 200% more torque than the standard ones

Re: Indian Army's new official vehicle - the Tata Safari Storme!

Just saw one at Opera House, getting some accessories installed. I couldn't believe my eyes, since I thought Government vehicles cannot be modified.
Anyway, the colour is not something photos can do justice to, and the car looked like a true blue (pun intended) Green monster on the road!

Just a thought, maybe the Power & Torque gain is compared to the Vehicle currently used by the Army - The Maruti Gypsy
